to think not folding a buggy to make way for a wheelchair user on a bus is despicable?

Just watching Channel 4 news here and a focus piece on public transport accessibility for disabled people.

Apparently one of the biggest users for wheelchair users is parents with buggies not folding them to make way for wheelchair users. This startled me - surely there are not really parents out there who refuse to fold down their buggies to make way for a person in a wheelchair??? Seriously? What kind of twat does that?

AIBU to think that any parent who does this is not a nice human being?

Does this actually happen???

Canihave

I am not quite sure how I am supposed to respond to that except that yes indeed it is selfish.
I guess you and I differ in that if I realised I held a deeply selfish view I woukd go away and consider that and examine why rather than proclaiming it without any apparent desire to hear the reasons why it is change worthy.

I often admit to being a bit of a twat but the point is that through recognising it I may realise the need to change.

Pagwatch · 21/06/2012 22:52

I understand what you are trying to say. Where we disagree is where you keep telling me what I meant but unfortunately are incorrect.

You can tell me what you mean. I can tell you what I mean. but I am pretty sure you are not able to tell me what I mean

CanIhavesomeginnowplease · 21/06/2012 22:52

Landof That remark barely warrants a response. Driving to do day-to-day tasks in inner city London would just be silly, not to mention it wouldn't be cost effective in the slightest.

If you are in central london I refer you to the link above

"wheelchair users have priority over everyone else"

Given the frequency of buses and the number of times you have probably been in this position I am astounded you would have the attitude you do.

CanIhavesomeginnowplease · 21/06/2012 22:58

Pagwatch That is indeed where we differ, on this subject anyway.

I'm going to follow Kelly's lead and go to bed.

KellyElly · 21/06/2012 22:59

Pagwatch No only you know what you mean. I can only verbalise how I interpret and read your posts.

Now I really am going to sleep before my dd wakes me up at the crack of dawn :)

elizaregina · 21/06/2012 23:00

with the greatest respect Glitter - I know you are there I have had direct contact myself with two disabilty groups and both leave ALOT to be desired - seem confused and have no balls or teeth.

Attitudes towards disabled people are falling rapidly - hate crime is increasing.

After boyle and carr and even gervais - i didnt hear anything from the disbled groups saying they would take them to court and prosecute them?

Perhaps like fathers for justice you need to start doing more drastic things to get air time.

after all cameron had a disabled son....

landofsoapandglory · 21/06/2012 23:02

Really, I barely warrant a response because I suggest you do something to avoid being so selfish as to not giving u the wheelchair space on a bus? Do you get that, wheelchair space, not pushchair space! You are right, you are selfish and I hope that one day when you refuse to give up the wheelchair space that the bus driver makes you leave it!

Pagwatch · 21/06/2012 23:05

Excellent. It's nice to know that I mean what I mean and not what you chose to interpret.

Thing is as a group people with disabilities don't tend to have the income for court cases - particularly now legal aid is pretty much out of reach to anyone.

Plus they are more likely to lack the physical abilities to climb up gantries...

It is very simple.

Wheelchair space on buses is designated for people who use a wheelchair.

thecook · 22/06/2012 01:50

Everlong - regarding my earlier post

No I do not know the circumstances of the selfish witch on the number 31 bus. She was stood with a pram/tractor with one baby. No toddlers. No. shopping bags. You created the scenario you posted. She was actually texting and was too lazy or selfish to move her tractor/pram hybrid.

FOI- I gave nothing agsinst women with prams on buses. I have helped many women off with them at my stop.

I do fucking hate the self entitled tractor brigade who are too fucking lazy tofold em!

LurkingAndLearningForNow · 22/06/2012 06:15

Haven't read the posts, I already know what they say.

Ooh, have of any of the entitled mummies have pulled out the 'but I'm so tolerant I treat people in wheelchairs like everyone else - like shit by understanding they don't want the seat, are perfectly capable of waiting for the next bus (and my own personal favourite) I saw someone once in a wheelchair so I know they'd be HORRIFIED to make my ickle darling walk!!' Shock

Any of that yet? That's my faaaaaavorite! Grin

I know a man who went to prison for sexually abusing his children. He was put in a wheelchair whilst he was there. I wouldn't fold paper let alone my buggy, if he was trying to get on the bus

It might be relevant, if you saw me not folding my buggy and thought I was a selfish, ignorant, entitled twat

At risk of repeating myself (again). Can I just say one thing about "exceptional circumstances".

If you think you have exceptional circumstances which mean you can refuse to move out of the space reserved for someone else - well, you knew about those circumstances before you got on the bus!

All the excuses - you've got twins, it's snowing, you have lots of shopping bags, your buggy is, inexplicably, designed not to fold, you are racing to a hospital appointment that you haven't given yourself enough time to get to... Those things have not arisen since you wheeled your buggy into the wheelchair space. They were already the case when you made the decision to travel on the bus.

An exceptional circumstance would be if something had suddenly happened whilst you were on the bus that somehow prevented you from moving.
The other things can be mitigated and avoided with the application of a little creative thinking, a little planning and a small amount of effort from you.

So please stop trying to think of convoluted reasons why your particular special case means you have to use something that is not rightfully yours, at the expense of the rightful owner.

FFS

IT IS NIT DOWN TO THE BUS COMPANY TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR PARENTS WITH PUSHCHAIRS THAT ARE EASILY FOLDED

BUSES HAVE TO PROVIDE A WHEELCHAIR SPACE FOR A PERSON USING A WHEELCHAIR BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FOLD UP THEIR WHEELCHAIR

FFS GET OFF THE FUCKING BUS OR FOLD THE FUCKING PUSHCHAIR.

THERE IS NO CIRCUMSTANCE WHERE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLD A PUSHCHAIR, NONE AT ALL.

I DON'T CARE HOW MANY CHILDREN, SHOPPING BAGS, BAD BACKS, HOSPITAL APPOINTMENTS, or SCOOTERS YOU HAVE.
IT IS HOWEVER, PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A PERSON USING A WHEELCHAIR TO PUT SAID WHEELCHAIR ANYWHERE ELSE.

STOP BEING SO FUCKING SELFISH.

sorry, I've tried to make my point nicely, without shouting, but I literally cannot take it anymore.

I cant quite believe there are people still trying to justify this, and blaming the bus company for not having a pushchair space.

GET A FUCKING GRIP, YOU DON'T NEED A PUSHCHAIR SPACE.
FOLD THE BLOODY THING.
