AIBU to want to buy a coloured bathroom suite??

I can't stand white suites - they're just not my bag. I also think colours are going to come back soon in a big way Wink.

I really want either a primrose or light green suite when we renovate our dreadful old bathroom (hopefully later this year) but I'm really struggling to find suppliers other than specialist companies who will make 'replacement' items for people who want to keep their old suite but need to replace e.g. a cistern or bath panel. I've also seen a few second hand 'vintage' suites (including a gorgeous art deco one) but I really want a new one as I don't think it would be easy to find one in barely-used pristine condition.

I just want to buy a whole suite in a nice colour - surely I can't be alone? Confused

I have just ripped out a pale green suite, after rather too long and replaced it with a lovely white one.

My dear Mother LOVES her sage green suite - it is hideous, never looks quite clean and she does not live in a hard water area.

As a child of the 70s I remember the turquoise suite in another house of my parents, and (oh, how I shudder) the DARK BROWN one with orrange and brown tile walls. (we moved quite a bit when I was a kid, probably when the bathroom started to freak my parents out)

Selks · 18/06/2012 21:55

Yeah the mock croc ones would be a tad tricky to pull off Grin

I thought they were supposed to be back in fashion about 5 years ago. But by the time everyone starts getting one, they must be out of fashion. We've just got rid of a champagne one. White is pretty default and beyond fashion and, importantly for a bathroom, shows the dirt. The thought of these dark brown toilets...

TheHouseofMirth · 18/06/2012 22:02

I too have wanted a coloured sute for ages. Let's lobby all the bathroom companies.

icapturethecastle · 18/06/2012 22:11

We ripped out a avocado suite last year - I said to my DH we will probably want this back in a few years. Would love that turquoise sink from notonthehighstreet Tabliope or a beautiful pastel art deco suite (maybe not in 1950s house). We are doing our bathroom up now and have put in a white suite, but yet to be tiled. I was going blue or aqua tiles but now leaning to grey - maybe I shouldn't be so boring.

Love the video Maamekin

I have a champagne coloured bathroom, with matching floor to ceiling tiles. It was like this when we moved in, but we haven't bothered replacing it as I actually love it, and it just feels more relaxing and warmer than my mum's stark white bathroom.

Coloured suites will be back, soon

Frawli · 18/06/2012 22:19

I am not sure why but coloured bathroom suites (particularly toilets) freak me out a little bit. There is no way I could have one, particularly dark colours, like I've seen some on TV that were even as dark as navy blue, I genuinely couldn't go on a navy toilet.

Having said that, when I was growing up my mum's house had a blue suite, like a baby blue, or pastel aqua, that sort of colour and that doesn't scare me as much as other hues!

I think quite strongly coloured suites were fashionable in the 70s and they are hideous IMO, but late 80s/early 90s the fashion was for a much paler colour, like champagne, peach etc. My in-laws old house had a really pale pink suite and it was actually really nice. It hadn't occurred to me how little choice there is out there, unless you're paying a premium the choice appears to be just white.

Tabliope · 18/06/2012 22:20

I love that blue sink. I think seeing pictures like that make you realise if you buy somewhere with an old coloured suite you could actually make it look good with a bit of creativity with the tiles. There has to be a backlash against these beige bathroom tiles. There's so many of us on here saying we'd like something different. It just seems to me everyone is either doing up a bathroom in the same way with a view to ultimately selling or it's property developers giving us that look. I can spot a house that's had a property developer do it up a mile off. It's like a uniform now.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 18/06/2012 22:23

I'm not a fan of coloured suites, too many memories of my parent's champagne cream, ex boyf's maroon, gran's bright 30's yellow, but I do love colour in the bathroom.

like this

Now I just need to hogtie persuade DH to go for it!

Tabliope · 18/06/2012 22:31

I love that Scone. The tiles over the sink are lovely.

Buntingbunny · 18/06/2012 22:53

I still have a coloured bathroom suite, it works perfectly. I have absolutely no intention of spending money changing it.

DrCoconut · 18/06/2012 22:53

We have a pale yellow suite. It was here when we moved in and we have no plans to replae it yet, it doesn't need it and we don't have the budget to rip it out just because it's not fashionable. I too hate property programmes that advocate destroying period features in the name of modernisation. We went after a house that still had the original range and fireplaces in. It had already been offered on by a developer and we couldn't compete. Next time we went past there was a huge skip outside and all the lovely old features being thrown in. It will be just another beige clone house now. Probably got vases of twigs too.

Back in th days of coloured suites (my mum went through chocolate brown, purple and finally cream as it was the only one that ever looked clean) you used to be able to have a suite coloured for you.

No idea what you would look for in the yellow pages but an option might be to buy white and have it coloured.

Squirrelz · 19/06/2012 08:40

My own opinion is that if coloured suites do come back it will be bold primary colours, rather than the pastel shades of the 80's or the brown/orange/avocado shades of the 70's.

I'm sure I've seen bright reds and blues in the kind of showrooms that stock brands like Vileroy & Boche (or however it's spelt!).

EauRouge · 19/06/2012 08:56

Well I didn't think I like coloured suites but after seeing this I have changed my mind.

Do you think in 30 years time on MN, our children will be complaining about the house they have just moved into and its awful 2010s coloured suite?

wonkylegs · 19/06/2012 09:08

Personally don't like them but got a pale blue one for a client from www.hmjames.co.uk
From memory they do lots of colours

Just joined after looking at your comment about coloured bathroom suites. I have an aqua/turquoise cast iron full suite. I don't want to break it up for scrap. Any ideas of who might be interested to buy at reasonable price? I feel as though I'm getting rid of a Rolls Royce and replacing it with a Fiesta. Your comments were in June so I think I'm rather late in trying now! Just thought you might, even now, have some advice for me.
Thank you

CajaDeLaMemoria · 24/10/2012 20:47

Oh god, please don't.

Our current house has a green bathroom. We did see pictures of it when it was newly fitted, looking quite smart and lovely, but it looks horrible now. It's only two and a half years old but the colour is very dating, and everything in the bathroom just looks odd.

We have changed the toilet seat and tried to "wash out" the green with dark bright blue towels and fluffy white floormats, but it's still green, and it'll still be ripped out as soon as possible. I'd opt for white and jazz it up with wallpaper and accessories, or go for a more classic shade like light pink, peach or blush.
