i picked dd1 up at school today, and she has a massive graze on her nose, upper lip, lip and chin. Her left cheek was swollen and she had the beginning of a black eye.

Tbh she looked like she'd been in a brawl.

When I asked her what had happened she got teary and just wanted to go home.
Her regular teacher wasn't around and there was a sub, who is really not a great teacher. When she saw my expression the teacher casually mentioned that there was a note in dd folder, but offered no other explanation

I am really upset. I know that fallings part of growing, and they did applied some ice. But this incident happened very early today (before break from what I gather)

Dd has a massive swelling on her cheek, lip and chin and was in pain for the majority if the day. She's a really strong little girl and doesn't complain easily so didn't make a fuss

The school has a policy not to administer any children's brufen without permission, but they never contacted me to ask if they should give her a dose or if I would like topic her up.

So wibu to go in and complain very loudly to the class teacher? not about the actually falling part, but how they handled the situation after that?
Seeing my little girl's face so badly scraped and swollen and the fact that she was in pain unnecessarily is breaking my heart so my judgement might be a little off.

I would expect a call from the school for any injury that caused pain and distress. DD fell over and cut her knee badly a few weeks ago. The school rang me and said they had dealt with it, cleaned it up and applied a plaster and she was ok. They seem to contact parents where a child is clearly upset, which DD was.

I think YANBU. If it were the other way round, if your child had gone into school in the morning looking battered & bruised and when questioned you casually mentioned there was a note about it in your DDs bag but offered no further explanation then the school would maybe investigate further to rule out DV at home. Therefore I don't think it unreasonable that you should have had a fuller explanation of what exactly happened at school.

My DD is quiet as a mouse at school, she barely talks to answer her name, let alone volunteer any information. She would not have said anything either. There are many different types of children, you cannot use a blanket expression- 'she is old enough to tell a teacher' because some are and some are not. Depends on the teacher too, some are just not approachable.

A couple of years ago my dd(6) tripped in school and fell flat on her face. The school phoned me and told me... " Hi Mrs just phoning to let you know your dd has had an accident. she has split her lip and knocked her tooth out and is quite upset, would you like to come get her.

They had left it to my dd to decide, and she chose to go home. When I picked her up she had a fat lip, was covered in blood and the bridge of her nose was swollen. I took her straight to the hospital to be told she had broken her nose. (her tooth had fell out but it was already wobbly and just kinda fell out).

The school phoned to warn me what had happened and gave my daughter the option of whether she wanted to go home. This is what your school should have done in my opinion. I hope things go Ok with you at the school and that your daughter is ok this morning. I wouldnt make a big scene but I would tell them you are not pleased with the way the situation was handled and in future would like to be phoned if your child is injured to this level.

Please let us know how you get on xx

A quick update.

Dd woke up with a rather interesting lookinglip, and a black eye and rather horrible looking scraped nose and chin! But she seems to be really cheerful and herself and wanted to go into school.

Dh and I went in to see the class teacher. She was really apologetic.
She said she had been watching dd all morning and whilst dd seemed fine she agrees that the swelling did seem to get worse as the day progressed. She also admitted that she has been swamped with end of term preparations so wasn't as vigilant as she could have been.

I got a feeling that the teacher was apologizing for the sake of apologizing. So I've come away feeling that nothing was really settled.
I must admit I'm very very releived that this academic year is about to end!

YANBU. Ds1 had a similar fall recently and he grazed and cut the whole right side I his face cheek to forehead and over his eye. It swelled up and was extremely sore. We were with him when it happened (park accident) but he was very upset and shaky and in pain.

School should have called you, I would actually say sent her home, or at least given you the option. DS' school would have done. They should also have spoken to you about it.

I'd go as far as to say that the school has failed in its duty of care to your DD. Im glad that your little one woke up feeling ok this morning, no one was to know how badly she had hurt herself and I wouldnt be happy at the response from her teacher - my childs well being comes way before her end of term prep. My neice ended up in hospital with a bleed to the brain after a fall at school and was very poorly for a long time. Again glad your DD is ok.
