to really miss getting pissed?

BettyFriedansLoveChild · 17/06/2012 20:35

DD is 4 months old and am ebf. No intention to give it up before six months, but I REALLY miss drinking! Will happily have a v small amount of wine with a meal, but miss being about to go out to a pub and drink with abandon. It's not just the breast-feeding, its also the overwhelming sense of responsibility, knowing that my choices don't just affect me anymore. Someone please tell me that I will be to enjoy a boozy evening in the pub again one day?

I'm another one who sort of agrees with ballotelli. Why the bleedin' nora do we tend to view getting hammered/ mashed/ rat-arsed/ bladdered/ wasted/ shitfaced as not only socially acceptable but also desirable.

As for all this talk of.. erm.. 'judgey pants'. Weren't the views of posters being sought? Judgeypants yourselves for calling us naysayers 'judgeypants'.

bogeyface · 18/06/2012 19:42

Why does "Drink with abandon" mean "get pissed"?

I took it to mean drink without worrying. As in, have one glass, have ten glasses, it doesnt matter because you havent got to consider anything except yourself.

I thought it was more about missing the lack of responisbility from pre-kids, not the need to get munted.

YABU. I have just started to drink with abandon again. Have had two tries at it, and it's rubbish quite frankly. I've lost my touch, I feel really self conscious that people are aware that I'm drunk.

ThisAintKansas · 18/06/2012 19:51

YANBU. I really missed being able to do what I wanted without constantly thinking about the effect of my actions on my milk. It was tiresome.

Its only for a short time, though, and to be honest, I guzzled wine when breastfeeding with no ill effects.

Chin up. There is always chocolate Grin

Krumbum · 18/06/2012 19:58

I don't see the point of drinking if your not gonna get drunk. It's a drdouse use it to have fun! It seems weirder to me to just have a glass with dinner. People wouldn't have just an evening half a line of coke! Drugs are for getting wasted with.
I don't think you can be sanctimonious about others drinking unless you are completed teetotal because you are exactly the same,

balotelli · 18/06/2012 20:30

I dont think I judged anyone. If you are feeling judged maybe its because you are feeling a little guilty.

I asked a few questions of OP and you all seemed to think it was a judgement! NO. IT. WASNT.

Just because I have different views on alcohol to you doesnt mean I am judging........ just disapproving! Grin

I can relax and unwind very well without the need of chemical assistance.

If you miss those carefree childless days so much...... why did you have kids?
I have 3 gorgeous c and do not ever miss 'those days'. I enjoy being a parent toooo much as well as working full time while DP does child care in week I do it all at weekend. Neither of us need body damaging, mind altering chemicals to help us.

But then maybe I am just happy with myself and my life.

molly3478 · 18/06/2012 20:37

balotelli its different when your with them all the time its nice to have a night out.

bogeyface · 18/06/2012 20:38

Your posts come across as judgey and sneery, whether you intend them to or not. "I can relax and undwind without the need of chemical assistance"

Well bully for you! So can I and the vast majority of other people, does that mean we should never have a delicious bottle of wine occasionally?

You do sound very holier-than-thou I am afraid.

bogeyface · 18/06/2012 20:41

If you miss those carefree childless days so much...... why did you have kids?

Congratulations, you have won "Stupidest thing to say ever" award. FFS! Can someone not move onto another stage in their life without looking back and thinking "Ah that was a great time! I wish I could go back, just for a day!" I can only assume your life pre-kids was utterly bloody miserable!

Neither of us need body damaging, mind altering chemicals to help us.
Good for your DP, cos if I was him I would need more than a couple!

But then maybe I am just happy with myself and my life.
Well so am I, and I am enjoying it with a glass of wine, cheers!

Hopefullyrecovering · 18/06/2012 20:49

For myself, I'll freely confess to having an alcohol problem. I read Balotelli's post with sympathy.

I enjoyed a drink. What's wrong with that? I started enjoying a glass of wine with dinner. Then it crept up to two glasses of wine. Then a bottle. Then two bottles etc. Over years, this can happen.

So there are dangers in alcohol, which everyone knows about in theory but they don't really know about it until it's happened to them. Or to someone they love.

Cut Balotelli some slack. And enjoy your drink when you finally have one, OP.

Noqontrol · 18/06/2012 20:50

Oooh this thread has made me want a drink. I'm going to pour myself a Hendricks gin, with tonic, ice and slices of cucumber Smile

Of course you're not unreasonable op, it's great to let your hair down occasionally and forget about responsibilities for a few hours. The next morning with a hangover and kids though, not so good. But I still do it Wink

BettyFriedansLoveChild · 18/06/2012 20:52

Bogeyface, yes, you put it more eloquently that I managed to, but that is exactly what I meant.

greensmoothie, I'm not sure that I want to get hammered / mashed / shitfaced - I think that my 'pissed' is perhaps other peoples' idea of 'tipsy' - its all in the semantics.

balotelli, yes, pretty certain that I do not have a 'problem' - if the only alcohol left in the world was WKD (or similar) I would be happy never to drink again. But wine is not just 'alcohol', its the product of a specific place and a specific winemaker, it enhances the flavour of food in a way that most soft drinks simply can't do, it is (in my opinion) part of a civilised approach to eating and drinking. To refer to it simply as 'body damaging, mind altering chemicals' is a bit closed minded. I like my life - hell, I LOVE my life, and wine is an integral, enhancing part of that life.

Oh fgs, of course alcohol/anything is bad in excess but it is not poison! There are plenty of studies which show moderate drinking of wine can protect against heart disease - it's the polyphenols, dontcha know.

Personal choice, if you don't drink but please don't guilt-trip people who may enjoy drinking in moderation - have you never been to a Mediterranean country?

Elkieb · 18/06/2012 21:04

Balotelli (sp?) I love being a Mum, and would never, ever change it. But, I also like going out with my friends every once in a while to have a few drinks and shoot the breeze.

I do not have an alcohol problem, or rely on drink for a good time. I'm still the person I always was, but with a beautiful, happy baby boy who is very well looked after, much wanted and waited for.

When you stop questioning others about their choices in such a condescending and patronising tone you may find a better response.

Note how I don't question your decisions on how you live your life, though I do not necessarily agree with them.

Your response has made me feel quite angry with your judgemental attitude.

balotelli · 18/06/2012 21:45

I dont know if any of you have noticed but this part of the forun is called...

'Am I Being Unreasonable?'

It is asking a question. I happen to think that yes you are. If you dont like the answer....... dont ask the question.

FYI Alcohol is officially classified as a poison. It just happens to be a legal one.

If it was invented today it would be outlawed in the same way that heroin, canabis, cocaine etc is now.

You are also judging me by assuming I am a female!!

I really enjoy a good night out with friends. I just dont need to drink alcohol in order to do it.

bogeyface · 18/06/2012 21:49

It wasnt your "YABU" that anyone objected to. It was the way you posted it, in a judgey and sneery way. You are not better than anyone else just because you dont drink, but your posts have all implied that you think you are.

Thats what people object to.

Male, female, whatever.....I would still need a drink....

bogeyface · 18/06/2012 21:50

Oh and check the cupboard under the sink, thats where I would hide the vodka........

moonshine · 18/06/2012 21:54

Balotelli (and I personally have neither assumed not referenced your sex!), please could you link to a (reputable!) source/reference that states that alcohol is an actual chemical poison?

Krumbum · 18/06/2012 21:56

Balotelli no wonder you think that when your days still are child free! So there's nothing to miss. Maybe if you did more childcare you'd think differently.
I think people felt judged because you were rude.

Krumbum · 18/06/2012 21:58

Lol didn't realise being female was so terrible! I'm sure everyone is so sorry for making that 'judgement'.

Elkieb · 18/06/2012 22:16

I really can't see people mentioning your gender, I think you have bought it into the conversation.

Do you talk like this in real life? The anonymity of the Internet can be too tempting for some people. I can't imagine your friends/family/etc being too impressed if you tell them alcohol is a poison and that they are alcoholics if they fancy a night out.

Alcohol acts to relax and enhance social experiences in moderation. I'm not talking getting pissed and ending up in the gutter, just a few glasses of wine. You sound like a whole lot of fun actually, so I'm quite glad I don't have to listen to your twaddle in real life.

Btw, before you go making assumptions I'm a nurse, and do know what I'm talking about.

LentillyFart · 18/06/2012 22:24

I bet the dinner parties are fun at yours then balotelli. Oh - and you DO sound smug, pompous, judgey and frankly a bit absurd. If you are unable to differentiate between getting bollock-faced on Buckfast and enjoying a few civilised drinks in good company then it's you with the problem, not everyone else. And wine is a chemical is it?

Here's a little bit of wisdom for you to consider (the oldies really are the goodies aren't they? Grin )

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt

Elkieb · 18/06/2012 22:26

I raise a glass to you lentilli!

LentillyFart · 18/06/2012 22:27

Cheers Elkie

Your very good health!
