To not like to hear children say oh my god?

NDN's DSs are playing outside and as usual they are directing operations within the group of kids from the street who are also out.

Several times now I've heard one or other of them say "oh my god, are you thick?" or " oh my god that was close" etc (they're playing football).

AIBU to think that using that sort of phrase age 8 isn't acceptable? I'm not religious btw.

I was brought up that we don't say Oh My God.

I say it now I'm an adult but I don't let DS7 Say it. He's allowed to say Oh My Word or Oh My Goodness.

OliveSoap · 16/06/2017 18:49

"Are you thick?" I don't like at all. "Oh my god" doesn't bother me one iota.

Whoever said this^. To the Christians getting their knickers in a twist, could I point out that 'Oh my god' is non-specific -- you could be referring to any number of gods from any number of faiths, or indeed the much-famed Flying Spaghetti Monster.

You could be right on and switch to 'Oh my goddess'.

Either way, I don't have much patience with the lower-middle-class twitchiness that just thinks 'it's not nice from a child' and would prefer jolly Chalet School-type exclamations like 'Great Caesar's bathmat!' or 'Jumping Jehosophat!'

OliveSoap · 16/06/2017 18:49

Oh my god, a Zombie!

DeadGood · 16/06/2017 18:53

I'm not particularly keen on it myself, but this thread has reminded me that I used to say it all the time as a kid. Not sure why - I think kids of about this age have a need to express surprise, or make exclamations of this kind.

UnicornSparkles1 · 16/06/2017 20:32

My DD started exclaiming OH MY GWAD! at literally everything following our holiday to the US. I have now corrected this to "oh my gosh" which bothers me far less.

Beeziekn33ze · 16/06/2017 20:36

It used to be the standard reaction when Llewelyn Bowen had removed every shred of comfort and taste from someone's room.

Funnyfarmer · 16/06/2017 20:39

I would be more bothered by my dcs saying "are you thick" than "Omg"
My teenager uses it alot. It's used alot on America tween tv programmes.
It's not a phase my younger one uses often. But It doesn't bother me when she does

myusernameisnotmyusername · 16/06/2017 20:42

If my dd (4) ever says it i tell her to change it to gosh right away. I tell her it's naughty. (Although sometimes I find myself saying it!)

StinkPickle · 16/06/2017 20:44

I don't allow it. I correct my son (5) to oh my gosh

I'm atheist.

BartholinsSister · 16/06/2017 22:38

This thread has certainly risen from the dead.

EyeHalveASpellingChequer · 17/06/2017 06:06

How is this on the front page of Mumsnet?!

Highalert · 17/06/2017 10:31

I just thought that. It's a 5 year old thread.

fannydaggerz · 17/06/2017 10:46

I don't see the problem to be honest

BigFatGoalie · 17/06/2017 11:20

I absolutely hate it.
And I people saying "Jesus Christ" absolutely abhorrent.
Not sure why it's only JC that gets used as an expression, and not Allah, Buddha, Hindu gods etc...

salemcat · 17/06/2017 11:25

I don't like it & my children know not to say it around me.

nina2b · 17/06/2017 11:38

Yes but the words are actually blasphemous. Would all of the planet's religions - thinking of one in particular - be so understanding and "forgiving"?
I have heard non-Christian children use the expression and the irony never fails to strike me.Hmm

Ilovewillow · 17/06/2017 11:40

I hate it too and pick my daughter up on it every time she says it - she now says oh my gosh instead! They pick them up on it at school too but it a C of E school.

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 17/06/2017 11:53

I don't like it and say it's swearing to God.
However I prefer that to my 10 year old explaining to me what tea bagging is. Sadly he knew and heard it explained at school.

feathermucker · 17/06/2017 11:59

It has never bothered me in the slightest. I really don't see the big deal in it.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2017 12:28

I am a practicing Catholic. Someone once told me that when you say OMG you are acknowledging your need for God. So I don't mind it.

snowgirl1 · 17/06/2017 13:51

I'm atheist, but I still don't like it.

andbabymakesthree · 17/06/2017 18:00

I used to do the oh my god and children picked up on it. Now try and say oh gosh or wowsers!

I hate anyone being called thick stupid idiot or fat and I remind them when name calling starts.

carameldecaflatte · 17/06/2017 18:39

My 5 year old started saying it a lot after starting reception. We try to change it to "oh my goodness" and told him that some people wouldn't like to hear it.
As an atheist I don't find it offensive but some people do (his gm) so we gently correct him but don't make a massive fuss as that would make him say it more!
On the other hand we have zero tolerance for any sort of name-calling.

BewareOfDragons · 17/06/2017 18:43

There are worse things they could say. A lot of worse things. That's relatively innocuous these days.

Lweji · 17/06/2017 18:49

"Are you thick?" I don't like at all. "Oh my god" doesn't bother me one iota.

I was going to post similar, so this.

Even god is probably more concerned about the thickness than the godness.
