To not like to hear children say oh my god?

NDN's DSs are playing outside and as usual they are directing operations within the group of kids from the street who are also out.

Several times now I've heard one or other of them say "oh my god, are you thick?" or " oh my god that was close" etc (they're playing football).

AIBU to think that using that sort of phrase age 8 isn't acceptable? I'm not religious btw.

And agree that a lot of adults aren't thinking of religion or blasphemy, it's so commonly used that it has pretty much adopted a different meaning.

DamnBamboo · 17/06/2012 22:49

So is 'for Pete's sake' more, less or as equally as offensive 'for Christ's sake'?

DamnBamboo · 17/06/2012 22:49

Oh yeah OP, YABU

Krumbum · 17/06/2012 22:53

Nah unless you are religious then why would you care? I think saying 'are you thick?' is worse because it's actually insulting another child.

FootballFriendSays · 17/06/2012 22:55

How about "for goodness sake"? That's taking goodness into vain. Some people may believe in goodness. Plus it's so very bloody twee.

EllenParsons · 17/06/2012 23:09

As someone else said, I don't mind oh my God but "are you thick" is a bit mean!

monkeymoma · 19/06/2012 17:34

IMO saying "oh my god" is the same as saying "bless you" or "ahh bless" - is that offensive too? (and to who?)

ThisAintKansas · 19/06/2012 17:37

Doesnt bother me in the slightest, sorry. YABU.

Cockwomble · 19/06/2012 17:38

YABU I am not religious.

ComposHat · 20/06/2012 00:29

YANBU - I would encourage use of the phrase 'cunting crikey' as a non-offensive alternative to 'oh my god.'

notnanny · 20/06/2012 00:32

I love "Oh My DEYS". I heard it from a little Polish girl. She sounded like a wannabe English Great Aunt.

notnanny · 20/06/2012 00:34

"Jesus Wept" "Christs Sake" "'Kin Hell" "Lord preserve us". This is about as close to religion as I ever got. Blush

piprabbit · 20/06/2012 00:38

No more offensive than "Oh my ears and whiskers". My DCs have neither ears, whiskers or a god.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 20/06/2012 00:44

'Oh my god' does not bother me in the slightest (but as other posters have said, calling another child 'thick' definitely would) however I discouraged it as the DC went to a church primary school and I thought it would more than likely wind someone up there Smile They have a tendency to say 'oh my days' instead which always makes me smile.

I'll admit to saying it a lot, and 'Jesus H Christ' - I blame all the faith schools I attended tbh.

piprabbit · 20/06/2012 00:47

OK - I take that back...they do have ears. But no whiskers or god.

millieandmax · 20/06/2012 02:44

OMG is an explicative (think that's the right word not sure) of astonishment nowadays nothing to do with religion as far as kids are concerned.

Rhubarbgarden · 20/06/2012 03:38

What about holy cow?

CheerfulYank · 20/06/2012 03:54

DamnBamboo that reminds me of :o

Anyway, I don't like it either. I am religious though and try not to take the Lord's name in vain. :) I do often say "Ohhhh Lordy" though...not sure where that one came from.

CheerfulYank · 20/06/2012 03:56

PMSL Pip I was about to ask if your children had some terrible auditory system deformity. :o

Molehillmountain · 20/06/2012 06:12

I haven't liked it when dd1 has said it but thinking about it it's because it just sounds too grown up for a six year old. Not so much the blaspheming side of it. A bit like when she does a fake American accent because the big girls do.

Spatsky · 20/06/2012 10:01

Doesn't bothere me at all. My son told me off for saying it this morning after his teacher had to,d him it was a "rude" thing to say.

Can't say I understand why it bothers people so much, even if they are religious, but as I now know it offends so many people I suppose I will make more effort not to say it.

Never realised there were such strong feelings about it as I hear is all the time everywhere.

DamnBamboo · 20/06/2012 10:04

Cheerful yank Grin

monkeymoma · 20/06/2012 11:34

I think Holy cow has taken on a whole new meaning now, can't hear it without thinking of 50 shades and I haven't even read the books!

southlundon · 20/06/2012 12:10

I find it offensive. My parents brought me up to consider it swearing and I feel the same whenever I hear anyone saying 'Oh my God'. I really don't mind it as much as someone saying "Jesus Christ" which I find really offensive.

It's one of the ten commandments doncha know, which is why religious people find it offensive and they shouldn't really be saying it themselves!

monkeymoma · 20/06/2012 12:15

southlundon, what about "ah bless" or "bless you"
