To not like to hear children say oh my god?

carabos · 17/06/2012 18:28

NDN's DSs are playing outside and as usual they are directing operations within the group of kids from the street who are also out.

Several times now I've heard one or other of them say "oh my god, are you thick?" or " oh my god that was close" etc (they're playing football).

AIBU to think that using that sort of phrase age 8 isn't acceptable? I'm not religious btw.

I say it a lot but don't use other swear words. I'm a saint really Grin. I didn't realise it would bother people.

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 17/06/2012 18:57

Grin Mama. Do you get "So's your face" as well ?

MamaLazarou · 17/06/2012 18:59

Never heard that one!

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 17/06/2012 19:02

Example:

Child A: "Your trainers are really crap"
Child B: "So's your face"

Child A : "that was a really bad throw"
Child B: "So's your face"

Pinkflipflop · 17/06/2012 19:08

It's an inappropriate and disrespectful thing for a child to say.

lambethlil · 17/06/2012 19:09

It's blasphemy.

I don't use it, and correct my DCs if they do. I'm a Christian and although I don't think God gives a flying fuck minds, lots of people I respect really, really hate it.

DaffodilsAreMyFav · 17/06/2012 19:13

Don't mind "Oh my God" in the slightest but bothers me a bit when kids (mine or others) fail to say "please" and "thank you".

Molehillmountain · 17/06/2012 19:14

Can't bear it. Dd has started to say it and I always correct it.

OwlsOnStrings · 17/06/2012 19:15

I don't have any problem with it but have taught my children not to say it in front of other people, as Christians (and others) may be offended.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 17/06/2012 19:18

YANBU. I hate it with a passion when kids say that I am not a Christian. I am a childminder and I ask the children in my care not to say it either. HATE it.

Then again, I hate any child saying anything vaguely sweary, even though I can swear like a sailor myself (not in front of minded children!)

kidsinamerica · 17/06/2012 19:23

I am guilty of using such phrases, but didn't realise my kids had picked them up until.................

Very 'religious neighbours had some building work done. During the digging of foundations four foot of the end of our garden collapsed into theirs. When dh went out to talk to them our dd toddled across the garden towards them. She took one look at the hole, threw up her arms and shouted "Oh My God!" Neighbours physically winced at the language, dh apologised and moved conversation on. Once neighbours seemed relaxed again (and dh was finding conversation easier), our 7 yr old ds arrived, looked at damage and declared "Jesus Christ on a bike, what's happened here!" Neighbours simply walked away, dh felt awful and I have learnt to watch my phrasing around the kids!

ChaoticismyLife · 17/06/2012 19:24

"Are you thick?" I don't like at all. "Oh my god" doesn't bother me one iota.

This ^^

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/06/2012 19:31

After lots of correcting, our ds's now say, "oh my gosh" which sounds ever so middle class!!

Paiviaso · 17/06/2012 19:32

YABU.

Moominsarescary · 17/06/2012 19:34

Hate it, ds who is 9 is forever being told not to say it

HouseOfCheese · 17/06/2012 19:36

I don't like it but only because it makes them sound too grown up and teenagery, (which is no doubt why they enjoy it).

smogwod · 17/06/2012 19:38

We do the 'oh my gosh' too (though strongly suspect dd1 goes back to 'oh my god' whenever I'm not in earshot!)

Hulababy · 17/06/2012 19:38

I don't like it either and I would never let DD say it - corrected to oh my gosh. DD's school wouldn't allow it either.

I do the same correction/told not to to the children I teach.

Not particularly religious but just not keen - and it is potentially offensive to others.

cureall · 17/06/2012 19:38

I don't like it and do say 'my goodness' instead, I'm vaguely religious and it sounds sloppy and impolite to me.
DH and I both let slip and v occasionally swear in front of the kids, they know bad words and aren't shocked by them but I've taught them it's just laziness not to use better language. What is wrong with 'Wow'?
Also aware that although some people don't give a flying F, a significant proportion of people do find it offensive and I'd hate DDs to offend when it's so easy to think of another way to express the same sentiment.
Crikey, anyone? :)
V much like 'sos your face' exchanges btw.

Notinmylife · 17/06/2012 19:39

DS recently started saying it, I have been correcting him so he now says "Oh my goodness" I don't know why it bugs me but I can't stand him saying it!

monkeymoma · 17/06/2012 19:43

I'm religious and I don't mind it!
some of the most religious people I know (nuns and priests included) use god related expressions of surprise like that!

mine says oh my goodness which is much cuter IMO but I don't mind Oh my god, it doesn't seem to offend properly religious people but non religious or vaguely religous people seem to be offended on religious people's behalf on this one!

ravenAK · 17/06/2012 19:44

It's dd2's new catchphrase - I'm assuming she's picked it up from her nanny as she's saying it in a broad Pakistani accent. I'm a bit surprised that nanny uses the expression, thinking about it, as she's v religious herself.

Doesn't bother me at all, in fact I probably wouldn't even have noticed she'd started saying it a lot if it weren't for the accent, which sounds so incongruous coming from dd2 (who's white & normally 100% Yorkshire sounding) that it makes me smile every time.

Agree 'are you thick?' would bother me more.

StepOutOfSpring · 17/06/2012 20:45

YANBU, it's teaching them that it's OK to disrespect those with other beliefs.

TapirBackRider · 17/06/2012 20:48

Are you thick bothers me. Swearing by children really bothers me. "Oh my god" bothers me not a jot.

WithACherryOnTop · 17/06/2012 20:48

It doesn't bother me,though it probably helps that I'm an atheist. I prefer 'Jumping Judas on a unicycle' personally.
