To think that people have the principles they can afford?

Do you have, or know anyone that does, principles that would absolutely not be ditched in the event of greater wealth?

What do you mean an hour? I have wasted spent most of the day on this thread!

MarianneFaithless · 14/06/2012 16:41

I also think your friend is jealous , Hully.
Agree with person above who said it's more about her, than about you.
Approaching old age in poverty is very scary, and she's probably just lashing out at you, whilst realizing her options are closing in, and that principles don't usually put much bread on the table.
Not a v. helpful attitude for her, though.

I try and hold to the Buddist thought, that , looking into another's eyes, you see your own hopes and desires reflected.
Very helpful, especially when irritated by someone.
I tell myself we all fundamentally want the same things, and are equals.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 14/06/2012 16:43

What is a brown derby?

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 16:43

Approaching old age in poverty is very scary

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?

OP posts:
AbsofAwesomeness · 14/06/2012 16:43

There is an episode of 30 Rock not really about this very issue, where Liz Lemon is deciding whether or not to decide to invest in a property, and then she meets her childhood hero - very hippie writer lady. Hippie writer lady lives in a very dodgy area, having a poverty stricken old age

Jack Donaghy comes out with the immortal line "never follow a hippie to a second location".

(you can tell I'm very tired)

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 16:44

Go at once. At once.

Have double egg and chips, an ice cream float and then the brown derby.

It is a (stale) donut with ice cream on the top and choc sauce

Ah! I misread it as "along with scummy." I was quite pleased to be added to a spreadsheet.

lololol @benders in buns

hackmum · 14/06/2012 16:51

Ooh, this debate has moved on a bit, hasn't it?

Am now mesmerised by the thought of FioFio's parents burning their pubes in a Wimpy.

Anyway, about a year ago I took out a stocks and shares ISA. I had to see the financial adviser guy about it this afternoon, and while there I glanced down the list of companies I'm invested in (hadn't bothered looking properly before). To my horror it was people like Glaxo, Shell, BP and (gulp) British American Tobacco. What's worse is that, despite my initial horror, I didn't say anything.

Does this help, Hully? Probably not.

FioFio · 14/06/2012 16:51

my youngest didn't get into our catchment school either :(

I don't think some people realise how common that is.

He said to me today he doesn't want to go to the other school too and could he just carry on staying at home?

MarianneFaithless · 14/06/2012 16:52

Not saying you are old!! (Though nothing bad about old)
Just that if you are poor,(like I thought you said your friend was?) that it's not much fun looking ahead to a worrying old age, bills, no comforts etc. It does preoccupy you.
She probably sees you having a nicer time, and, yes, is jealous.

scummymummy · 14/06/2012 16:54

We're not the first to notice the Wimpy comeback

Poor baby Fio. Applying to schools is a nightmare. Are you waiting for a space to come up somewhere else then?

NarkedRaspberry · 14/06/2012 16:54

yup

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 16:58

Oh fio Sad

I really think that bloody schools cause so much angst between people

OP posts:
Hullygully · 14/06/2012 16:59
