To think that people have the principles they can afford?

Do you have, or know anyone that does, principles that would absolutely not be ditched in the event of greater wealth?

your friend is a bit jealous

you're on a hiding to nothing and will ne er con ince her

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:36

It seems that way shj, but we have been friends for nearly 30 years and I can't bear to think it.

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 14/06/2012 11:37

You kulak Ariel sends you to gulag, get on with ye

Hully yes it's amazing how it's not ok for you to make wealth but it's ok for her to consume it.

SHE is perpetuating the system by taking your money and, I assume, by buying stuff.

I am totally against private healthcare, but I am not going to suffer my entire life with a mental health problem because the NHS can't deal with it if I can afford not to. It sucks and I'm a hypocrite. But that's my choice.

Whatmeworry · 14/06/2012 11:37

your friend is a bit jealous

Agree - sounds to me that her politics are more about envy than socialism.

cory · 14/06/2012 11:37

Depends on what precise Socialist views you hold. A good many of us are moderate SocialDemocrats who would like everybody to have a decent chance of life within a strong welfare mixed-economy society: absolutely nothing in that that is incompatible either with running your own business or having a comfortable lifestyle.

It's not seeing people drink champagne that makes me angry; it's seeing other people not having enough to eat.

Obviously, if you are a Communist, then it's going to be harder to reconcile that with any kind of private enterprise. But ime genuine Communists are few and far between.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/06/2012 11:38

But we live in a capitalist society - so unless you want to camp in a tent outside the Houses of Parliament you really just have to suck it up and get on with it the best way you can.

DH runs a business that provides gainful employment and a reasonable wage for 10 people. I feel that in that way we are contributing to society and I ignore the fact that it is a haulage company polluting the very environment of which I am so fond.

You could drive yourself mad trying to align your principles and your lifestyle.

hackmum · 14/06/2012 11:39

Look, the thing is, we all live in the context of a particular system that we didn't choose and we can't escape from. We all have to make our decisions as best as we can within that context.

To take an example not related to private school and money and all that stuff. Suppose you care about animal rights very deeply. Whatever you cut out of your life, there is always a point at which someone calls you a hypocrite because of something you haven't done. You have to stop eating meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, buying leather shoes or handbags, buying wool (because it's a byproduct of the meat industry), wearing cosmetics and owning a pet (because it will eat meat). And probably even if you do that, someone else will point out to you that because you give your money to organisations that are involved in the exploitation of animals (all the supermarkets, for example), you are still complicit in the system. Or because the aspirin you take for your headache was tested on monkeys.

So we all have to make compromises. It's just about where you draw the line. In my humble opinion.

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 11:40

it doesn't ean she isn't your friend, though, Hully

or that she isn't a socialist/you're not a socialist

it's just one of those niggly friend things and not uch to do with principles or politics, I'd wager

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:41

My views are just:

There is enough money in the world to mean that everyone should have enough decent food to eat, a roof over their head, access to free education and healthcare and an equal chance at life's possibilities.

And don't kill animals. It's specieist.

noddyholder · 14/06/2012 11:42

I have a lot more money than I had in my 20s and my principles are the same. I think I am just made that way. There is certainly very little effort involved as I am a lazy moo tbh. I am also quite naturally frugal and interested in food and nutrition so find that comes naturally as its how I was brought up and I just happen to believe in it.

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:42

I don't think she wants to be my friend any more shj - but I can't do owt about that. But it is sad.

Hully the poorest most working class people hold right wing views I think capitalism and right and left wing views can be seperate, same as the young middle class people who say they are against capitalism and protest but live fine in their nice home with middle class parents Iyswim ,

SpringHeeledJack · 14/06/2012 11:44
Sad

get pissed on ca a and Ha e It Out

TuftyFinch · 14/06/2012 11:45

but hully why doe it matter? why don't you just say te her 'ok, i'm not a socialist in your eyes'
you know youre a socialist if that's what's important to you. but no one's going to come around and count the socialists are they? you won't get missed off the list.
i don't know why it's so important tolabel our beleifs. 'mnot alligned to anything but i dohave principles that i don't thinkwouldchange if i had money but these are to do with behaviour more than actions. I hope I will always try to be kind nomatter if i had £7or £7m. The difference is if i had £7m other people would be morelikely to mis interpret my actions because it sounds better if their friend who has £7m is an arse that the friend who has £7.
What would make you ahppier: happy DC and a compromise of your values or fucking misrrableDC and you feel your values are true? Of course. So tell your friend to fuck off. When are we having our minimeetup? You can buy me a fairtrade coffeeyou capitalist bastard.Grin

The first thing i'll do if i get nay money is a laptop that fucking works!

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:45

said person already did that. Get pissed and Tell It Like It Is. I can't fight back tho as I said.

The Dalia Lama talks include, how to apply Buddhism in the Western World, this weekend, there will no doubt be follow up reports on this.

There are lots of teachings on how business men can still be Buddhists, it doesn't have to be an either or choice and is quite an easy concept to live by, but it does require a lot of personal honesty and commitment, which most of us are not good at.

The same applies to Landlords, nothing wrong with owing/letting property for property, but lots wrong with being a slum landlord, the principle's of ethical living are not difficult.

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:47

Maybe I just need to say, look, you just don't like me, do you? And then we'll know where we are. But we are part of a group of friends so it's all a bit complicated...

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 14/06/2012 11:47

a socialist and a communist are 2 different people socialist can have lovely lives and want better for society , a communist wants equal for all and we all know how well that works people are poor yet the leaders are rich Hmm thats my take on it anyway it does look like a simple explanation and understanding and im sure somebody will dispute it,

Hullygully · 14/06/2012 11:48

anyway, I really really really must work now.
