AIBU & WWYD DH & DD1 motorbike trip....

Babylon1 · 13/06/2012 03:27

DH and dd1 (7yo) are planning to go off to top of Scotland on DHs motorbike for approx a week in July.

I'm shit scared something bad will happen while they are away, and the last few nights it's played on my mind :(

DH says I'm bring daft and they'll be fine. He is a safe rider, but it's other road users that bother me.

DD has been on bike before, she has ALL the necessary safety wear and is comfortable on the bike. They will be doing a mixture of camping/travel inn and b&b.

Do I let her go? I will be at home with small DCs during this trip.

Actually bamboostalks if you'd read the whole thread you'd know I posted in AIBU because I wanted different opinions and viewpoints. Which I have had, I have carried on posting and updating this thread so those who wish to post can and can see the history to the thread without it becoming convoluted.

Thank you for your input anyhow :)

babylon it sounds like a trip of a lifetime for your DD, something she will always remember. Which is lovely, and it's great that DD and your DH are so close - a taken here but reading threads on here it's not always the case.

I imagine you will always remember this trip too but for different reasons! I think you should be proud of yourself, really I do Smile

Babylon1 · 25/07/2012 11:07

Thank you sardinequeen!!

A little update....

DH & DD currently stranded and awaiting recovery from the Welcome Break at Abberton Services, South Lanarkshire.

Very flat back tyre only at the bottom punctured!!

They're fine though, only had to push bike a few hundred yards.

Last night was cold and wet apparently and with a flat tyre today, I'll be surprised if they make it through to next Monday!!

DH just called and asked me to start putting together a for sale ad for the bike! It has affirmed his suspicion that he is ready to part with it! Grin

Now I just need them back in one piece and I'll be happy too Grin

They've been recovered but bike won't be ready to ride again until tomorrow so they've checked into the Elph hotel in bigger?

So no more worrying for me today Grin

Pantah630 · 25/07/2012 13:17

Poor them, hope there is somewhere for them to go walking or get a taxi into nearest town. Assuming he needs a new tyre so would need ordering up, TDM doesn't have the most popular rear tyre size unfortunately. Hope the rest of their trip is better :)

Davinaaddict · 25/07/2012 15:29

Oh dear but good news for your stress levels Grin Glad they've having a good time though. Only 5 days til they're home Smile

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 25/07/2012 16:15

Ooh, hotel looks good!

Babylon1 · 25/07/2012 17:54

Tyre is on order and bike should be fixed by tomorrow lunch time! TDMs do not have the most common tyre size, you're quite right!!

Thank you for link to hotel, dd is impressed with it!!!

DH has decided to cut short the trip now and instead of going to Wick and Thurso they want up get as far as Lochness (Urquart Castle) then they will start to make their way back home Smile

SardineQueen · 25/07/2012 20:15

Things going not according to plan and having to do other things on short notice is deffo all part of the fun though! She will have such a tale to tell when she gets back Smile

Babylon1 · 25/07/2012 20:40

I'm very proud of my pair of adventurers but will be more so when they're back home!!

DH has said I should start planning some family adventures in the camper Wink

Honestly it's so great what you have done.
you are a super mum Smile

NicholasTeakozy · 25/07/2012 22:44

What SQ says. You are a super mum. You've given your DH and DD the best present ever.

Babylon1 · 26/07/2012 00:53

Thank you Blush

I hope they appreciate it too, I'm sure they will Grin

say no.

ex-husband chose to have appendicitis (sp?) during TT week and i was visiting the hospital when all the motorbike accidents were in there. the man in the bed next to him had no skin on his back and was in a lot of pain. he'd been sitting on the back of a friend's (parked) motorbike, when the friend decided to set off, for a laugh. the had hardly moved when he fell off.
then there was the friend of my grandparents who lost an arm and leg when he came off his motorbike...and a man i worked with who had steel plates in his skull, and steel pins all down his leg, from coming off his motorbike...

i'd say no.

lovebunny · 26/07/2012 06:15

but then, i didn't read the whole thread and they may have gone and come back safely by now!

Babylon1 · 26/07/2012 07:22

Grin lovebunny

They went on Tuesday, made it safely to Lanarkshire, then bike got a puncture and is now in for repair!!

They get it back later today Smile

Hardest decision in the world to let them go, but they've stayed in regular contact and are enjoying themselves Grin

Babylon1 · 26/07/2012 10:46

Just spoke with DH - he is totally pissed off that he is without bike and probably won't get it back til after lunch.

I didn't realise they are still south of Edinburgh - I thought they were much higher up appalling geographical knowledge here Sad

He is talking about coming straight home when he gets the bike back. He's totally fed up and I don't know whether to be Grin or Sad for them.

I'll be Grin when they're back home but will likely feel a bit Sad that they didn't make it to the top as planned.

So I'm just waiting to hear their plans now!

ExitPursuedByABear · 26/07/2012 10:58

Just caught up on this thread. How brave of you to let them go. I found out my DD had been out on a quad bike with her friend the other day (both aged 12). I was Shock and discussed the danger with DH, who pointed out that horse riding is probably more dangerous and I let her do that every day.

Glad your DD is enjoying the trip - shame about the puncture.

AgentProvocateur · 26/07/2012 11:03

They could cut the trip shorter and come up the west coast instead (Biggar is south of Glasgow and Edinburgh) and go to loch lomond instead of Loch Ness etc. the scenery's far nicer on the west.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/07/2012 11:18

And midges are less of an issue in the NW, because while the rest of Scotland has had weeks and weeks of unremitting rain, they have been in drought.

Babylon1 · 26/07/2012 11:38

They're on their way home Grin

They're finding the bike too limiting so are coming home.

A shame for them I know, but they'll be better opportunities and we can all go :)

OP posts:
Pantah630 · 26/07/2012 12:48

What a shame for them, understandable though as holiday is supposed to be fun not a trial. Tell him to take the scenic route back :)

diddl · 26/07/2012 13:02

Bike "too limiting"?

What does that even mean?

Surely though whole point of this was bike travelConfused

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/07/2012 13:45

Being on the bike certainly limits souvenir purchases.
