I don't know why it bugs me so much but I really hate it...apologies to any fans.

Oh dear, I tick the Steiner box too, but I had no idea that would be included. I wouldn't describe my parenting as AP, however.

Yes, I agree. I think the term can sometimes be intended to encompass the whole 'AP' parenting.

But perhaps can also apply to to places where talk of 'fluff' aka cloth nappies and baby wearing, in a more fashion sense.

hopenglory looks like your friend isn't a MN-er. The word she's looking for, really, is lentil weaver.

CailinDana · 12/06/2012 15:03

Even my DH says "lentil weaver" now! Grin

Using slogans when talking about children is pointless and divisive as firstly you might using a slogan that another mum doesn't understand, which automatically excludes them and secondly if other mums don't follow whatever the fashionable slogan represents then they can feel judged on their choices. It smacks of childish playground behaviour where someone who isn't "in the know" is sneered at. People I used to work with used to do the same sort of thing with music and cameras strangely enough. They would spout all sorts of technical terms as a way of making themselves look cool and clued up and sneer at you if you admitted you hadn't a scooby what they were on about. Stupid behaviour.

Yanbu. Makes want to puke. I use a sling. And if I ever need to mention it I say "use a sling". You can't wear people.

I think learning about sleep regressions and growth spurts is a good thing - as most some people think that because their 16 weaker is now not sleeping through and eating more it means they need solids. I have met a lot of people who weaned at this age (4 months) because of this, and had never heard about the 4 month growth spurt, or spurts in general. My MIL advised I added weetabix to a bottle and cut a hole in the teat! Luckily I was bf, and was quite happy to sit down and feed every couple of hours and eat hobnobs whilst watching desperate housewives

It seems to me that even baby wearers themselves can't decide if it's another term for carrying a baby in a sling or whether it encompasses a whole style of child raising. Therefore I think I hate it for being ambiguous Grin

We had a sling for number 1 & will use one for number 2 but I will never call myself a baby wearer. My parenting style is best described as 'winging it parenting' aka making it up as you go along. I'm sure I'm not the only one but honestly I don't see the need for all these labels.
