I know it'd then go to Harry but what if Kate were pregnant, would it then go back to the child once he/she were born?

A disasterous accident on the barge would have lead to such events...actually that wouldn't....cos that is likely to have affected the hypothetical unborn child...

edam · 05/06/2012 10:33

Don't members of the Royal Family fly separate to avoid the possibility of mass deaths? Anyway, the Windsors are quite a big family, would take an Emmerdale-style catastrophe to wipe all of them out. We'd be very, very, very unlucky to end up with Princess Michael of Kent as Queen Consort.

edam · 05/06/2012 10:33

separately, obv. Hungover!

Kayano · 05/06/2012 10:34

Not necessarily if they still employ women and children first and her maj, kate and camilla survived

Then her maj dies of a broken heart over her Phillip

Sad

I'm actually quite upset by this imaginary situation

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 05/06/2012 10:36

I am relieved I am not the only morbid person here Grin

I can't think of a scenario where Kate is absent and pregnant but everyone else is together. Given that they are rarely all in one place at the same time, to prevent this kind of thing.

ComradeJing · 05/06/2012 10:38

I understood that the unborn child takes the throne. I had heard that on Elizabeth's fathers death the queen mother had to be checked (even tho she was past menopause) to see of she was pg as a boy would have taken the throne over Elizabeth.

No idea if this is true though :o

Aquarium · 05/06/2012 10:43

Comrade Yes, I'd heard something similar in some documentary or other, about ensuring that no male heir were on its way. No idea if its true though.

MoreBeta · 05/06/2012 10:44

Harry would probably rule as Regent until the son of William reached maturity.

The more interesting question is whether Charles will rule as Regent at some point if the Queen is still alive but too ill to effectively carry out her role as Head of State. This would be a good solution as The Queen would not then have to abdicate (which I believe she has indicated she will never consider) but Charles would be able to carry out her official duties.

Aquarium · 05/06/2012 10:46

More Yes, I've wondered that because a monarch can't really retire, they either abdicate or die. After the Wallis Simpson debacle I can't imagine HRH would ever abdicate because it must have such negative links for her.

ClaireDeTamble · 05/06/2012 10:47

Here's a scary thought:

It would only take a freak accident to get rid of the first 12 in the line of succession (say that royal box at the concert collapsing) and.......

Mike Tindall would be Prince Consort [Grin]

He wouldn't. Peter Philips has two children: Zara is 14th in line.

Kayano · 05/06/2012 11:05

Well.... Just a thought (having watched and read game of thrones)

Would Andrew try to ursurp Harry by claiming he was illegitimate? Even if not true there are runours, we could be waiting on DNA results! Lol

sashh · 05/06/2012 11:49

Christmas - they have all gone to wherever they go but Kate has to stay put because heavily preggers and some medical condition that stops her travelling. That would also fit with a soap opera - having the disaster xmas day.

I bet Fergie would

JazzAnnNonMouse · 05/06/2012 12:14

The plot thickens... Grin

Harry is the spitting image of prince Philip though. I really can't see it when people raise the legitimacy question.

YouGoonie · 05/06/2012 16:19

Totally agree Pooka. And wasn't Diana's brother ginger so that's where that comes from?

scaevola · 05/06/2012 16:31

"Would Andrew try to ursurp Harry by claiming he was illegitimate? Even if not true there are runours, we could be waiting on DNA results!"

Which rumours are we talking about? Lord Porchester? Or James Hewitt? Grin

creighton · 05/06/2012 17:16

the emmerdale plane crash would never happen. they don't let all the major royals travel anywhere together.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 05/06/2012 20:10

But funny if Kate was pg and her unborn child was already King/Queen and she waddled around in late pregnancy!

Ah yes, if DH, FIL, BIL all died in a freak accident while she was pregnant that would be hilarious...Hmm

Sorry. Am I taking this too seriously?

CrownPrincessOhDearNigel · 05/06/2012 20:12

I believe the protocol is that a Regent is appointed until William's offspring was old enough to take the throne. This is what has happened previously. I don't know the ins and outs of how they are appointed though

Choufleur · 05/06/2012 20:14

Do we get more holidays for state funerals and coronations?

CrownPrincessOhDearNigel · 05/06/2012 20:16

Kayano - your scenario "kate and camilla survived" is wrong - neither of these two are in the succession and even if they were the only members of the Royal Family left after a freak accident wiped out the entire succession they still could not take the throne
