Erect the scaffold.

Up the Republicans.

We are ADULTS we don't need a feudalistic Divine Right of Kings addled parasitical bunch of halfwits to live off our taxes.

Love

I think merging the two arguments makes a very good case for not having the jubilee.
a) we can't afford it
b) we can't afford her

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 31/05/2012 14:30

Okay, give me some figures. "We can't afford her" - says who?

My earlier post was trying (badly) to say that the economics argument should work for all events, not just Royalist, if the real issue here is the fact our country is in debt.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:33

I don't think stopping the civil list money (about £40million) is going to be a drop in the ocean in the grand scheme of things. Though it sounds a lot, I doubt a president plus entourage would cost any less.

Republic vs Monarchy isn't really a financial argument even if you want it to be. Its a symbolic one.

DontmindifIdo · 31/05/2012 14:35

the country hasn't gone completely Royalist, it's just depressing republicans to realise that actually, they're not the majority, even though they might be the more logical and the more vocal side - when push comes to shove, most people quite like the royal family, particularly Liz & Phil. (Who, let's face it, are the nation's "Gran and Grandad").

So you have a choice, sit inside being terribly grumpy and dull, or think "actually, it's quite nice to have a party", make some sandwiches, pour the pimms, get chatting to the neighbours and have a party.

MmeLindor. · 31/05/2012 14:37

I don't mind the Royal Family, I quite like them actually. It is good to have a head of state who likes a good G&T and a flutter on the horses.

I really don't get the idea that they are German though. Yes, they have German ancestors but they also have English/Scottish ancestors.

The Germans would actually quite like to claim them as their own, I imagine, cause they are awfully popular over there (going by the glossy magazines that are obsessed by Kate).

I don't think that Hully is racist, but I do think that she is being rather provocative and am not quite sure why.

squoosh · 31/05/2012 14:38

I don't think British people will ever do away with the monarchy, they are firmly in their thrall.

MmeLindor. · 31/05/2012 14:39

As to the "we can't afford the Jubilee" - I will agree with that when I see figures.

Going by the sheer amount of work and visitors in London last weekend, who were buying up Jubilee tatt souvenirs as fast as the staff could restock them, I would imagine that the celebrations have benefited the economy. Unlike the bloody Olympics.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:39

"and am not quite sure why" - boredom.

No-one with even half a functioning brain really thinks Di was pregnant with Dodi's baby and the Royal family had her popped off in history's most inept assassination.

Aboutlastnight · 31/05/2012 14:40

I agree it's a symbolic one. Although £38.2m is a lot of money. It is. For one family.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:41

I don't think British people will ever do away with the monarchy, they are way too apathetic to have a revolution firmly in their thrall.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 31/05/2012 14:42

But it's not FOR them. They're probably really narked they have to give up their bank holiday weekend. Grin

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:43

Yes it is a lot - would be a lot for one president and his hangers on too. But thats exactly the way it would work. Though I guess at least you could vote him/her out.

If the royal family started funding diamond mines in liberia I suspect that Parliament would pretty sharpish start reducing the civil list money so its not without control.

Aboutlastnight · 31/05/2012 14:43

That isn't the view if the Governor of the Bank of England Mme Lindor. But yes we are supposed to be good subjects and spend hard earned money on tat produced in China and shipped across the world.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 31/05/2012 14:43

Okay, badly worded post. It is for them, but it's also for the nation. And a lot of people are genuinely celebrating. In the grand scheme of the country's purse, £40m really isn't a lot at all. David and Victoria Beckham could pay for it several times over.

grimbletart · 31/05/2012 14:44

Gosh - this is like a replay of the Civil War. Roundheads and Cavaliers.
Roundheads - right, but po-faced, self righteous and boring. Cavaliers - wrong, but colourful, pazzazy and fun-loving. Grin

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 31/05/2012 14:44

I respect everyone's views but I'm amazed that some people are using the word 'subjects' as if they really mean it. Can you give us some examples of how the royal family have made you personally feel like a subject?

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:44

I doubt the Queen would miss the £38.3 million (I stand corrected about the amount). No doubt she'd rather be fly-fishing at Balmoral for the Bank holiday spending her own money than trekking around London spending ours.

Kewcumber · 31/05/2012 14:46

"this is like a replay of the Civil War" - in which case Liz should really start making plans to steal away under cover of darkness as that didn't really end well for the king...

DontmindifIdo · 31/05/2012 14:47

Besides, I do'nt understand why anyone thinks the royal family wouldn't want Diana to remarry and have a child with someone else? It would be the best outcome for them. Charles and Diana were divorced. Camilla was already being introduced to the world, the only thing getting in the way of their marriage was the public view that Diana was wronged by them, but if Diana was happily remarried herself and had another baby, it would be very hard for the press to argue Charles shouldn't also remarry. It would be presented as "they've both moved on and are happy now".

Plus if Diana remarried, she'd have to give up the HRH - she'd just be Mrs Fyad, perfect for Camilla. As it is, Camilla, although is the Princess of Wales can never be called the Princess of Wales because of Diana's death. If when Diana died she wasn't the Princess of Wales anymore, Camilla probably would use the title.

It would be much neater all round.

That is why I said that I would like to see figures on that.

It is not just where the tatt was produced though. The shops here in this country are selling them, so their staff are benefiting. The work that is going on around the country, the street parties etc - it all encourages people to spend money, and that is good.

The problem with austerity is that it encourages people to leave the money in the bank for a rainy day, and so no one spends, and no one earns.

bunnybabylon · 31/05/2012 14:50

well i'm earning my first bit of money for a long time thanks to the jubilee

i'd like to cut off a few heads myself, not the royal family though

merrymouse · 31/05/2012 14:52

I haven't checked my passport, but I thought they changed subject to citizen a while ago?

I suspect the Queen is actually quite cheap to run. I can just imagine that the private bits of Buck House haven't changed that much in the past 30-40 years. If we had a president people would keep redecorating, like at number 10.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 31/05/2012 14:56

Still no answer from the republicans as to why a republic is better. I'm off to AIBU for some more fun!

grimbletart · 31/05/2012 14:57

"this is like a replay of the Civil War" - in which case Liz should really start making plans to steal away under cover of darkness as that didn't really end well for the king...

True - but the republic was hardly a roaring success and only lasted a few years before the monarchy was restored so should be OK for Charlie and Wilia to hang around....
