To leave my pegs on the washing line?

QueenOfTheMadhouse · 30/05/2012 19:09

Am i being unreasonable to do this? I have noticed over recent weeks a distinct lack of pegs on my neighbours washing lines.

Does everybody else take their pegs down between uses? It has never crossed my minds to do this but I am thinking I may be in the minority going by recent evidence. Am I a slattern? Are my neighbours talking amongst themselves about my slovenly ways?

Pennybubbly, my socks and knickers go on one of those on the line and then you just whip it indoors. Saves faff. Mine's shaped like an octopus and folds up for storage (I think mil got it from ikea).

5, shouldn't imagine it really matters what hanger you use if you're not leaving it outside. As long as it doesn't snap under the weight of the pegs and even if it did, it's really easy to just replace it with another one. I seem to collect hangers at the same time as refusing to give up dd's baby clothes. It's a win/win situation. DH looks at me a bit squiffy every time I whip a new one off the sewing machine. I could start some kind of cottage industry. I'm too lazy for that clearly but I could.

Great thread, Are you an 'inny' or an 'outy'?

My pegs always come in, they are kept in a peg bag. My line always gets covered up. I could not rest at night knowing that the line was still up & uncovered Shock

My house is a tip, but I am fanatical about by wash line Blush

bogeyface · 31/05/2012 09:31

Well have just checked and my washing is still safely on the line after I hung it out last night!

{wanders off to count the number of twitching MNers because I left it out all night}

BsshBossh · 31/05/2012 09:56

I not only take my pegs and peg bag inside, but I roll up the washing line after use. But that's just my habit and I don't care what the neighbours do.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 31/05/2012 10:01

Doesn't the sun warp the plastic?

It does to mine if I leave them on. They end up snapping and breaking. My neighbour leaves hers on and I saw a couple snap on sunday.

bogeyface · 31/05/2012 10:02

ooh thats interesting, that explains why mine have been breaking, perhaps there is something to peg bags after all!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 31/05/2012 10:08

I never leave mine out, looks untidy and they go rotten/brittle. I've got an over the shoulder peg bag from Lakeland which is brilliant, you just walk along the line getting them in and out of the bag. It lives on a hook in the kitchen the rest of the time.

I don't put out the washing in any particular order on the line, socks go on one of the round things with little pegs underneath and I wipe the line itself with damp kitchen roll, but only if it hasn't been used for a while.

BsshBossh · 31/05/2012 10:17

Pennybubbly I have two of those Muji pinch hangers - all my smalls and socks go on them. I love them. My pegs are from Muji too. Fantastic shop!

Bertrude · 31/05/2012 10:17

Surely the pegs would get dirty if left out, therefore adding dirt to the clothes? never had a washing line outside though so my opinion means fuck all

legspinner · 31/05/2012 10:22

Bertrude ours get washed by the rain Grin

Another one who leaves pegs out...and my washing often stays out overnight, and we live in a more-windy-than-average place, never been a problem....

melika · 31/05/2012 10:32

They get rained on and dirty. I'm not in the habit of washing pegs, if I can help it. But also it means you can give the line a wipe with a soapy cloth. My mom never took pegs in either but it's a habit for me. And... I have a lovely peg bag in a kathy kidson pattern I love and wouldn't want the nasty polluted rain to soil it!!!! (flounce)Grin

BornToFolk · 31/05/2012 10:35

I knit my own peg bag. I made up the pattern and everything. I am stupidly proud of it.

Peg bag comes in at night, rotary dryer folded and put in shed. I have never wiped the line but I'm going to have to now, aren't I?

melika · 31/05/2012 10:36

BTW it's Cath Kidston, not what I said above but I got mine from Home Bargains(2.99).

bogeyface · 31/05/2012 10:40

In my defence at being a pegs-left-the-line, washing leaver outer, there are 8 people in this house, so I do atleast 3 loads a day! The line never has time to get put away, ditto pegs!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2012 10:43

I find the wooden ones are OK to leave on the line; it's the plastic ones that perish and break when you squeeze them.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 31/05/2012 10:44

And my pegs are not dirty! I leave them out all year round...

ThisIsNotWhatIWasAfter · 31/05/2012 11:01

I do have a peg bag an old t shirt that i sewed the bottom of then cut a hole across the chest. It lives outside if there's a chance of me getting to hang out washing ie about two weeks a year. I put the pegs in it every time. Grin at peg spiders. I don't always bring my washing in though and it's not unknown for me to put it out at 5:30 am although i have a 5 month old with a thing for getting up with the lark (otherwise i wouldn't even think about going useful stuff that early)

DonkeyTeapot · 02/06/2012 23:11

I have changed my opinion on this.

My brand spanking new peg bag was hanging on the door handle of the downstairs loo, and when I went to the loo today I saw a yellow peg peeping out, with a bloody peg spider on it!

Moral of the story? It doesn't matter what you do with your pegs, the spiders will win.

marriedinwhite · 02/06/2012 23:38

If you leave the pegs on the line, how do you wipe the line with a cleaning cloth before you close the umbrella and zip up the green plastic cover?

I have my Grandma's peg pag. I think she made just after the War, and I treasure it - I have some of her old Dolly Pegs in there too but rarely get to the bottom to have to use them.

bogeyface · 03/06/2012 00:10

In 39 years on Gods green earth I have never wiped a washing line clean!

Not4turning · 03/06/2012 00:22

I want to put my hubs through the washing machine when he does this whole thing of leaving the pegs up.

Arrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The next load you put out will be completely different so the pegs will be in the wrong place.

Arrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Please don't do this. It's really really annoying Smile

WhoKnowsWhereHerMajestyGoes · 03/06/2012 09:09

We leave the line out all year round (long line) so it does need wiping if it hasn't been used for a while, I made the mistake of putting whites on it after not using it all winter once and they got filthy. It only takes about 10s as you walk the length of it. I guess it takes a bit longer for a rotary one, but then you can cover them up or take them down more easily.

I just think it's easier to have the pegs in my across body peg bag than have them already on the line and in the wrong places. The bags with the hook that go on the line are hopeless with a long line though, you spend all your time walking back to it for a peg or having to keep moving it.

mumnotmachine · 03/06/2012 09:20

I always wipe the line before putting clothes out as its surprising how dirty it can get
I also never leave pegs out, I have a peg pinny which ties around waist- so much easier than a peg bag or leaving them on the line.
My next door neighbour leaves her pegs on the line and it really grinds me, although I have no idea why!

My pegs are also all the same colour, I used to get really irate at not being able to find two pegs same colour so bought all white!

lovebunny · 03/06/2012 09:20

i like pegs on a washing line. you know where to find them.

VickityBoo · 03/06/2012 09:29

Urgh can't bear pegs on an empty line - looks messy...in my opinion. Wink

I have a peg bag Grin
