I'm so sick of seeing slim celebs described as curvy!! It sends out such a bad message to young girls. Don't get me wrong I think these celebs look great & if I had their bods I'd be flaunting it in a bikini all the while Envy , but just cos they have big knockers does not make them curvy!! I am a size 14 and not jealous at all I would describe myself as curvy, someone who is a size 8 imho is slim.

In fact it's usuall accompanied by a picture of someone who's a size 12/14 + in a bikini or a fitted dress.

Downandoutnumbered · 30/05/2012 16:14

I'm size 6-8 and curvy. Big tits, big bottom, very small waist - I'm a classic hourglass. I get quite cross when it's used as a euphemism for "fat".

OneLittleBabyTerror · 30/05/2012 16:15

You are being very unreasonable. You can be slim and very curvy, with a good difference between the size of your waist with your boobs and bums. And you can be slim and look boyish (that's me). Size 14 doesn't mean you are curvy either. Most people we politely call curvy are in fact just fat with a big muffin top. But ofc you can look like Kim Khardasian or Christina Hendricks. But seriously how many size 14 actually look curvy like them? How many can seriously say they have a slim waist?

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 30/05/2012 16:16

If you need to get your off-the-peg clothes taken in at the waist before they will fit you then you are curvy. I am alas no longer a size 8 (except in M&S and Next on their more ludicrous items) but even when I was, if I wanted my clothes to fit me they needed taking in at the waist - ergo I had curves.

I get more irritated by barrel shaped celebs eg Natalie Cassidy when she's having a fat week) being described as curvy as a euphemism for not-skinny.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 30/05/2012 16:16

Surely "curvy" describes their relative vital stats? e.g. 34, 24, 34 and 5 ft 4 you would surely be a size 8? There is definite in and outness there.

YABU.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 30/05/2012 16:17

Pre baby I was a size 8 and had curves in all the right places my measurements were 34-26-32. Hopefully will be back in size 8 asap. xx

OfficialFlyingSquirrel · 30/05/2012 16:18

Oh I totally agree aircondition!
I'm slim yet curvy. Size 8-10. And it so gets my goat when fat people are labelled 'curvy'. There's even a special section on ASOS called 'curve', but to me the models look like Adele!
So yes, YABU. sorry :)

Haberdashery · 30/05/2012 16:19

My sister's a size 8 and VERY curvy. She has 30G breasts and a fairly large bottom compared to her teeny tiny 22" waist. She looks like Jessica Rabbit in anything remotely form-fitting. I am also a size 8 and am not curvy (though am curvier than I used to be - my breasts are much bigger than before I had a child). My shape is more athletic (though sadly I am not athletic and am quite unfit).

PrematurelyAirconditioned · 30/05/2012 16:20

Levi's Bold Curve jeans start at a size 24 btw. (I luff my pairs but they are very very far from being a size 24)

OfficialFlyingSquirrel · 30/05/2012 16:20

PS - Shakira. size 8 (probably smaller) with curves to die for.

youtalkin2me · 30/05/2012 16:24

just for the record, i describe myself as curvy because i have an hourglass figure, big boobs, small waist & a fairly round bum.

i agree with those of you saying the media uses the word as a euphemism for fat.

Paiviaso · 30/05/2012 16:25

YABU.

You can definitely be low-fat and curvy. Curves are the shape of your hips, the roundness of your bum, your breasts.

You don't have to be overweight to have these Hmm

AWomanCalledHorse · 30/05/2012 16:31

YABU.
What annoys me more than fat women nicking the term curvy is when people proudly say 'Well Marilyn Monroe was a size 16', without taking into account what her measurements/a size 16 was back in the day.

Katiepoes · 30/05/2012 16:32

Size 8 can't be curvy if you are one of these deluded people that thinks curvy = fat. As said you can very easily be curvy and slim, equally you can be fat and not curvy - e.g Dawn French pre weight loss was NOT curvy she was fat.

Am fully prepared to be told I am insensitive and fattist now. I am a size 12 and not curvy btw, I have big E cup boobs but no waist to speak of and a flat bum. I have been a 16 and an 8, and was not curvy then either.

Cockwomble · 30/05/2012 16:34

YABU, you can be size 8 and curvy.

Using curvy as a substitute for fat is U.

Cockwomble · 30/05/2012 16:35

I am curvy AND fat. Woot.

sereneswan · 30/05/2012 16:37

YABU. A lot of people now use 'curvy' as a flattering euphemism for 'fat', which in turn leads to the idea that no one can be slim and curvy. In reality people of any size can be curvy. I've seen large and small people be both curvy and totally non curvy. I'd love you to look at my disgustingly attractive and very slim Brazilian friend and tell me she's not curvy.

OneLittleBabyTerror · 30/05/2012 16:38

@AWomanCalledHorse I believe reading somewhere from the collection of Monroe dresses left, she's very slim, and about a US size 8 nowadays. The sizing has become very very generous over the year.

bumpkinbillionaire · 30/05/2012 16:46

YABU. I'm a size 8, my boobs are 28DD and I have hips and a small waist.

I am also a shortarse. If I was scaled up to 5'6 I wouldn't be a size 8. If you are tall and a size 8 you would probably be 'athletic' rather than 'curvy'.

Cockwomble · 30/05/2012 16:47

I SWEAR sizes are bigger now. I wear a 14-16, and when I was two stone lighter about ten years ago I wore size 14-16.

Confused
Katienana · 30/05/2012 16:49

That Marilyn Monroe thing winds me up, her weight fluctuated and she was pregnant several times...so it is probably one of those times that she wore a size 16 which would not have been the same as a UK Size 16 today, but a US Size 16 which is equivalent to a UK 12 anyway, so not that dramatic!
You can be size 8 and have curves definitely, when I'm at my slimmest I measure 39-26-39 if that's not curvy I don't know what is!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 30/05/2012 16:49

Hmmm not sure really. I'm a size 10 but would still describe myself as curvy as I have big boobs for my frame (30f) but others describe me as slim/thin. My teenage DD is size 6/8 and I'd describe her as boyish/waif like but I know some size 6's with big boobs that look curvier

Cockwomble · 30/05/2012 16:50

katienana Envy

TheProvincialLady · 30/05/2012 16:56

Tell that to my 28FFs. Or did you mean curvy in the sense of musn't-say-fat?

Krumbum · 30/05/2012 17:07

Most of these 'curvy' Celebs aren't an 8 they are a six or four and the word curvy when used in mags etc means being bigger, having big hips, bum and boobs. There's no point arguing over semantics, that's what they mean. So yes it is worrying that mags, news, tv think such tiny women are not that tiny and that people read and take this in.
