to think that a giant Range Rover with 'Overfinch' emblazoned on the back is the definition of 'twatmobile'

Was cycling down the road earlier, saw one of these things go by

I know lots of people say they need Range Rovers to cope with the pot holes, or the snow, or the pedestrians, or whatever things.

But let's be honest, they are big hulking lumps of metal that would tip over if you drove them too fast.

And on that basis paying £90k for a souped up one

www.overfinch.com/buying-an-overfinch/view-current-stock/

and then a further £5k or so for a personalised number plate just makes you look stupid.

Doesn't it?

(Just want to add I have nothing against fast cars, if you're going to get an Aston Martin or whatever, fine.....

But souping up a vehicle supposedly designed to drive up unmade roads. I mean why????)

I will never come for sports cars. Don't worry. And, I am insanely jealous of their owners Envy. As I said earlier in the thread, when I worked for LR Assistance, the Aston drivers were all awesome in every way. I never spoke to a mean one even though their cars broke down every 10 minutes. RR drivers tended to be twunts (not Mr. GrahamTribe though, he was always nice Smile). Honestly, if I had this conversation one more time... (imagine whiney, nasal, estuary English), "I'm stuck in low range", "what is your location", "Kensington High Street".

I have driven 4x4s BTW but only off-road. Also, I got to play on the off-road courses at Gaydon and it was great. They are just SUCH a PITA on the roads.

GrahamTribe · 31/05/2012 18:24

Grin MrsTP. I had your RR-driver experience when I worked in the trade - only our bete noire was BMW 3 Series drivers. They're a PITA too!

Astons though? Nah, I don't do English cars (though I confess that the convertible Bentley which pulled up outside the village shop at the weekend was pretty cool). I rely on Italian design for speed, looks, road-holding and fun and German engineering if I really can't risk breaking down or the electrics failing! Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/05/2012 18:29

Also, BMW drivers. I used to mute my phone and say (in a breathy voice to the office at large), "would you like a blow-job with that, sir?" because they were so demanding.

Tell you what , GrahamTribe, next time you have a car you want to give away to a deserving home, think of me and I will leave off Mr. GT. Otherwise, he's first against the wall when the revolution comes.

GrahamTribe · 31/05/2012 18:39

Grin That's my problem, I get too attached to them! I intended to treat the GTV6 as a restoration project, just as a hobby, to keep me occupied over the course of a difficult personal time, planning to sell the car when I'd got her back her shiny original self.

That was 20 years ago and I still have her! Grin

:)

Ahem. Hello, my name is GrahamTribe and I'm a caraholic. :)

Yes, fuel consumption. Not just the weight difference but also the friction caused by more wheels doing their thing. I have never understood why people want a 4x4 when they don't go off-road. They are less efficient and if you don't use the capability, what's the point? Not saying you're a twat. Smile

It is just that I think people who sell cars add things like ABS and 4X4 and because they sound fancy people don't question why they need them if they cause problems.

Poulay · 31/05/2012 21:37

We live in a rural area at the bottom of a long hill with a silly gradient.

I really find this sort of thing hard to believe. [that you need a car in these circumstances]

We stayed in a log cabin in the US at Christmas a few years ago, we rented a bog-standard saloon car, and this cabin was at the top of the most ridiculously steep drive way, and it was ICY. We got up just fine. Ok, it was slightly hairy, but I have yet to find a road in the UK where I'd not get up in a normal car. There's the odd byway perhaps, but it's hardly usual.

Now if you are fishing half way up Ben Nevis, well I won't see you to judge you, and in the very unlikely event that I didm I probably would think 'that's a bit of a poncey vehicle to be bringing up here', but no more than that. OTOH if you're driving around Surrey, as most of these bone-crushing SUV owners seem to be, I'll just think you are stupid. And anti-social.

And there are some sensible 4x4s I believe. Subaru something or other? The agricultural looking Land Rovers?

But anything with enough chrome to satisfy a flock of magpies and video cameras to help you park is just a twatmobile....

GrahamTribe · 31/05/2012 21:45

Ah, Subaru's are fun! But to go back to your original post Poulay, the Overfinch is said to have extremely good roadholding. No tipping up is likely, if you want to see that you should search out an old Suzuki SJ. They were reknowned for it!

Grahamtribe I am astounded at your defence of RR then slating of Astons-Shame on you!!! Can't really get a prettier car than an Aston & for this reason a One 77 is the top of my lottery list (though I think I may be running out of time for that particular model Sad

treefumaster · 31/05/2012 22:03

I don't know what overfinch is but I hate these cars. They are very dangerous for other road users - not only pedestrians but also other drivers. They are so looming that you can't see round them - or even over them, in the way that you can a normal sized car.

I can only assume a positive correlation between car size and ego size and a negative correlation between car size and common sense.

Poulay · 31/05/2012 23:23

Overfinch is a way to take a regular, absurdly expensive, Range Rover, and double the cost with a bit of chrome and alcantara.

Glittertwins · 01/06/2012 06:39

Poulay, you'd not be getting up and down our road in the last 3 lots of heavy snow recently. We live in a town centre but only the bottom third is cleared/gritted making it impossible to get to us unless you have a 4wd/awd. Last year neither an ambulance or a paramedic car couldn't get to our road for a neighbour.
We haven't tried winter tyres on our 2wd car yet but instead have just left it on the drive until the thaw.

theodorakis · 01/06/2012 06:40

Is it always ok to judge people who are rich? I personally hate crappy old cars chugging around. If someone wants to have a big car why not? Is there anything more naff than a Gee Wizz or a Smart (unless you live in the centre of london and only use it to go to the newsagents).
Ok I am playing devils advocate a bit but I don't understand why it winds you up unless you are jealous

Glittertwins · 01/06/2012 06:42

And you'd miss your ABS / other vehicle's if you were ever in the unlucky position of trying to avoid an accident MrsTP.

theodorakis · 01/06/2012 06:42

onelastsoul, I used to have a Forrester, could drive through the desert and often had to rescue people in much bigger cars who only had 4wd. Unfortunately wasn't big enough to fit everyone plus dogs inside. I still miss it though.

Glittertwins · 01/06/2012 06:55

subaru awd won't help when there's black ice sadly. It's how we lost ours and nearly DH as well.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2012 07:30

The definition of Twatmobile for me is the pink car I spotted with eyelashes and "powered by fairy dust" on the back.

mumblechum1 · 01/06/2012 07:35

Grin SoupDragon.

theodorakis · 01/06/2012 07:41

yes soup, agreed, I hate "aren't I sweet" cars. No, you are not, it's shit, it's pink, it has daisies painted on the side, it's a micra and if you are in a head on it will crush you.

treefumaster · 01/06/2012 09:11

theodorakis it winds me up because these cars are actively dangerous to other road users. Drive whatever stupidly expensive car you like but let me have visibility on the road too. It doesn't bother me to see someone in a ferrari and you don't see posts about that sort of car - you see posts about enormous cars that hinder other road users and protect their drivers and passengers at the expense of other people on the road.

theodorakis · 01/06/2012 09:14

Crappy old shitheaps are just as dangerous.

treefumaster · 01/06/2012 09:34

perhaps they are as dangerous to the people in it but not to other road users. Pedestrians are particularly at risk from very tall cars.

theodorakis · 01/06/2012 10:35

Unless they get banned there isn't anything anyone can do. I would rather live and save the lives of my family than stand at their graveside feeling I had done my best for random society by squeezing into an unsafe little heap. Luckily I live in a place where we would be dead without rigid chassis vehicles and air conditioning so I don't have to worry. Hitting a camel at 120kph is a sure death sentence in a gee wizz, I can tell you that for nothing.

trixymalixy · 01/06/2012 10:38

Treefumaster, so we should ban all vehicles larger than your car to give you visibility?
