To think that primary school proms are total wank?

DS1 leaves primary school in July. Today he brought home a letter informing us that to celebrate year 6 leaving, they are having a prom. DS is horrified, as apparently a lot of the girls are insisting on dates. DS would rather lick his own foot than be seen publicly with a girl, what with him being 11 and all. Tonight the fb discussions have started between parents arranging limos. Limos for 11 year olds. Surely this is beyond batshit crackers? Is this insanity normal now? What's wrong with a disco and a handful of haribo ?

Total waste of time. "Proms" are one of the worst things to happen to British schools in the last 20 years. They should be banned.

joanofarchitrave · 28/05/2012 20:58

boak

Im with you and your ds1. Could you arrange a picnic somewhere local for prom refuseniks? With rounders and crisps, possibly a firepit to make dampers on,r and other age-appropriate stuff?

usualsuspect · 28/05/2012 20:58

I agree , no need for it at that age

Totally OTT

Glittertwins · 28/05/2012 21:00

Oh God, I have this to look forward to? Noooo, totally ridiculous for 10-11 year olds. I think they're pretty stupid regardless.

kickingking · 28/05/2012 21:01

They're awful.

My niece had one, she was dolled up like a prostitute for it. It seemed DH and I were the only ones who were Shock at her photos.

UnChartered · 28/05/2012 21:01

YANBU

what ever happened to the leavers disco with a free bag of crisps and can of coke?

i agree with joan - have an alternative prom

ChickensHaveNoLips · 28/05/2012 21:02

I'm thinking of leading a rebellion and organising a trip to pizza hut. Or having an xbox-athon. Or just a humungous water fight in the park still in uniform

Awful, awful, awful! A part of American culture which I wish had stayed over there!

JosephineCD · 28/05/2012 21:10

I was at school in the mid 90s and they were just starting to come into Britain then. I can't believe they have caught on, we just thought they were for stupid people trying to copy "saved by the bell" and stuff like that.

HappyJustToBe · 28/05/2012 21:16

YANBU. How amazingly awful.

HappyJustToBe · 28/05/2012 21:17

However I do want to watch Saved By The Bell now.

Luckily we don't have primary schools here!!

startail · 28/05/2012 21:44

Leaving six form fine, when you have the figure for suites and long dresses. Any younger no.

Our Y6 are going to a local activity centre.

startail · 28/05/2012 21:45

Suits, I always spell it wrongBlush

Monty27 · 28/05/2012 21:45

YANBU. Fgs! is all I can say, well ok, I'll give a grrr as well.

Whatever are they playing at??

TidyDancer · 28/05/2012 21:47

Oh God, YANBU. I frigging hate proms. I hate them for any age. They are an American import and tacky at that.

thebody · 28/05/2012 21:47

Totally mad and far too young, 16 it's nice but 11!! ridiculous.

PissyDust · 28/05/2012 21:48

I have the figure for a suite Star.

My fat arse is imprinted on my faux leather one Grin

DD is leaving next year & we will not be getting involved inlimos or prom dresses.

My DCs school has a disco with coke and crisps. The whole prom idea is distasteful

ChickensHaveNoLips · 28/05/2012 21:56

Maryz, burning stuff is inspired

It was mentioned by the previous head at DD's school, I haven't heard anything yet, I'm praying we've escaped such lunacy.

Clary · 28/05/2012 21:58

Oh loads of parents at our junior school do limos.

It's madness IMO. Also a bit nasty - in DS1's year at least one girl was touting round "invites" to her limo party at a cost of £25 a head!

DD is leaving this year and certainly not going anywhere in a limo - I can't afford it tbh, plus I think it's bonkers conkers. Ditto proms, hate to see little 10yos (which is what DD is atm) in a long dress and high heels. DD wuld agree so luckily they just have a disco and a barbecue Grin
