to think that Morrisons should give me my debit card back so I'm not stranded!

Earlier today, while my 6mo was screaming, I stupidly left my debit card in Morrisons.

I have paid for train tickets to take myself and DD home from my parents house (we were here as dd had a hospital appointment local to my parents) tomorrow. You need to have the debit card you paid with to claim the train tickets.

I went to retrieve my debit card and was asked for ID, unfortunatley I left my passport/bills etc at my house (2 hours drive away) so could not provide any. Without my debit card I cannot get our train tickets.

I suggested I tell them everything I bought on that debit card in Morrisons today - the customer service lady went to get her manager.

He said no.

I suggested I log onto my internet banking on their computer as only I would know all of the passwords so this would prove I was me.

He said no. (They can't access internet)

I suggested they call Halifax Bank (therefore it's definately the bank) and I give them all of my security info (enough so that I could transfer all of my money) and they would confirm I am the owner of the debit card.

He said no.

I've called Halifax and they are happy for him to call them and they'll confirm my identity but the manager will not budge.

I know I shouldn't have left the card in the first place but I am stranded and have offered many alternatives but the manager just won't bend to help a once loyal customer.

That's ridiculous! Have you tried calling their customer services? Have you asked him what he suggests you do? What do they propose to do with your card if not give it back to you?

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 28/05/2012 20:15

How did you get to your parents' in the first place? You mentioned that you live a 2 hour drive away so someone must have a car for you to know that; will your parents drive you back instead?
Failing all that your best bet will be to phone the train company and ask them if you can pick the tickets up at the ticket office; presumably you have other cards (loyalty or whatever) with your name on it in your purse; they might accept that as ID?
Worst case scenario is that you buy new tickets and then claim a refund from the train company for the tickets you didn't use Smile

manticlimactic · 28/05/2012 20:18

So lets just say someone went and claimed your card, hypothetically (it may not happen but could if someone handed it in and took a note of the name on the card). You trotted in the next and they had handed it over to someone without ID? What would you say?

fairy they send it back to the bank. It's security protocol.

Chocolocolate · 28/05/2012 20:27

I agree with the ID request manticlimactic however I am the only person who knows all of the security information that Halifax asks for to confirm my identity so surely that would be enough? Using that info, I could empty my account anyway.

My DH dropped us off and drove back (he is currently working).

My mother will buy us another ticket but I won't get a refund as the tickets I bought were discounted.

The manager said he'd hold the card until I produced ID, we asked him to return it to the bank.

OP is hardly trotting into Morrisons with no claim on the card.
She can log into her account, can access personal banking by answering all of her security questions, knows exactly when she visited the store, knows exactly what she bought, can be identified on CCTV if bl**dy necessary. Even her bank is willing to ask for the card back.
Phone Morrisons customer service and tell them all this OP. You are right, without your card you can't claim your train tickets from the ticket machine at the station.
The manager is OTT and a bit of an arse it seems.

Chocolocolate · 28/05/2012 20:28

Tried their customer services - they are shut.

Halifax have been very helpful and have said there should be no issues with him handing me my card, but they can't force him.

manicbmc · 28/05/2012 20:30

If he won't hand it to the bank, who essentially own the card, then that could be counted as theft. It isn't his card and it isn't Morrisons's property.

If someone had left their card and not returned to claim it, I'm pretty sure policy is to return it to the bank.

MsKittyFane · 28/05/2012 20:30

Just seen that you've told him to send it back.
Complain. I bet Morrisons HQ will refund your ticket if you do :(

Pseudonym99 · 28/05/2012 21:33

Strictly speaking they should have cut your card up if you left it behind, so even if they did give it back it wouldn't work. It is your fault for leaving it behind, I'm afraid.

geegee888 · 28/05/2012 21:40

I'm not aware of any rules or even laws that prevent them giving you your property back other than in the manner they state, so I think I'd call the police on them.

I left my purse and cards in Waitrose once and they looked through it, found my phone number and phoned me at home. I went and collected it without any problems, very polite, nothing missing. I did again a month later and got another swift call from them, still polite, "Miss GeeGee, I'm afraid you have left your purse with us once more". I was embarrassed...

Birdsgottafly · 28/05/2012 21:42

As said, the Managers an arsehole. I have left my card behind numerous times, all i get asked is my name and they give it back.

Set your complaint out in writing, stating all of the steps to prove your identity that the manager refused, they will give you vouchers.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 21:46

They are being completely unreasonable, awkward and prickish. You are more than able to prove your identity. I would seriously consider calling the police.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 21:49

What gives them the right to destroy the card? is that their policy? What do they do with brolly left behind? Snap it too? Or car keys?

SardineQueen · 28/05/2012 21:57

Jobsworth.

They can't destroy the card!

frowniefuckingface · 28/05/2012 22:09

Phoning the police really? Hmm The manager asked for a proof of ID the op did not have one which was acceptable to the retailer, regardless of internet banking.

If the retailer had given it to someone else because they said it was their card then this op would be very very different.

Frazzledredhead · 28/05/2012 22:10

Write a letter of complaint to morrisons but also agree with others if you can borrow money from family buy new tickets , get refund on others and get morrisons customer services to pay the difference. I often buy 3 days train tickets at the beginning of the week but if one of DS's is ill again can get a refund same day if haven't used them or can send off to rail customer services if day after for a refund. Good luck! Btw TOTAL JOBSWORTH

McHappyPants2012 · 28/05/2012 22:14

i would rather miss a train home than some random person watching me put personal information into the computer or listening to my security questions.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 22:23

Yes phone the police. they are withholding her property. They aren't the bank. The onus is on the card holder to cancel lost cards its not up to Morrisons to protect the account. The op is able to prove its her card.

nannyl · 28/05/2012 22:28

I would be fuming too

Morrissons are being rediculously unreasonable.

if OP wasnt the owner of the card she wouldnt be able to prove it was hers would she? nor would she know what she purchased and when, and nor would she make such a fuss calling the bank etc...

Purple2012 · 28/05/2012 22:30

The police won't get involved. It's not theft. He is willing to return it with proof of id. Yes he is being a jobs worth by not accepting other solutions but it may be store policy.

frowniefuckingface · 28/05/2012 22:31

If the card isn't claimed (with proof of identification not internet or phone banking) within i believe 48 hours (it is where I work) the card will be sent to streamline not destroyed.

Good luck phoning the police when the store is trying to prevent card fraud.

JennyPiccolo · 28/05/2012 22:33

Can you go in when he's finished his shift and ask for another manager to deal with you? It's clearly not company policy so another person might be better to deal with.

YouOldSlag · 28/05/2012 22:33

Well the manager has just lost a lifetime of custom from the OP's family all so he could feel powerful for five minutes. Nice one. Job done.
