to think that Morrisons should give me my debit card back so I'm not stranded!

Chocolocolate · 28/05/2012 20:02

Earlier today, while my 6mo was screaming, I stupidly left my debit card in Morrisons.

I have paid for train tickets to take myself and DD home from my parents house (we were here as dd had a hospital appointment local to my parents) tomorrow. You need to have the debit card you paid with to claim the train tickets.

I went to retrieve my debit card and was asked for ID, unfortunatley I left my passport/bills etc at my house (2 hours drive away) so could not provide any. Without my debit card I cannot get our train tickets.

I suggested I tell them everything I bought on that debit card in Morrisons today - the customer service lady went to get her manager.

He said no.

I suggested I log onto my internet banking on their computer as only I would know all of the passwords so this would prove I was me.

He said no. (They can't access internet)

I suggested they call Halifax Bank (therefore it's definately the bank) and I give them all of my security info (enough so that I could transfer all of my money) and they would confirm I am the owner of the debit card.

He said no.

I've called Halifax and they are happy for him to call them and they'll confirm my identity but the manager will not budge.

I know I shouldn't have left the card in the first place but I am stranded and have offered many alternatives but the manager just won't bend to help a once loyal customer.

I think they are being a bit tight tbh. If you know the details written on the card then I can't see a problem? A random stranger wouldn't know those things. I'd probably ring the non emergency police no as well tbh and see what they thought. And I probably would write in to morrisons and complain, ask for train ticket money back as well. Smile

Sirzy · 28/05/2012 22:35

I can see why they don't want you disclosing personal banking details infront of them - that could lead them open to accusations after the event if someone was that way inclined.

I can understand why your frustrated, but I also understand why they want to see ID

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 22:36

They're not preventing fraud. They are being obtuse. So its not theft if your willing to give the item back but only if and when the owner meets some of your previously undisclosed conditions?

They are on shakey ground here.

EMS23 · 28/05/2012 22:37

Report the card lost/ stolen. The train company must have a procedure in place for when that happens which will enable you to get that train? Surely?

Purple2012 · 28/05/2012 22:39

The definition of theft is 'the intention to permanently deprive'. They are clearly not intending to do that so the police will not get involved. They will return it with id, and if the op doesn't go in with that I would assume the policy would be to return it to the bank.

hippoCritt · 28/05/2012 22:40

Could you print off bank statements online to prove ID?

frowniefuckingface · 28/05/2012 22:44

Well no it isn't theft at all the shop has not taken the card, the op left it there and the store is willing to give the card back providing the op can produce IDENTIFICATION, and because it is a bank card the liability will be massive if the card gets into the wrong hands.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 28/05/2012 22:45

Maddening.

StuntGirl · 28/05/2012 22:45

I'm sorry, I appreciate the OP has been left in an awkward situation but the guy isn't being a dick for no reason; he's probably just following company policy.

My last job was a retail one and we couldn't hand over cards without ID. It was also our company policy to cut up cards that were left behind too, but we didn't as people generally came back within 24 hours for them.

I feel for you OP because I know how frustrating it is but the manager is only doing his job.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 22:48

So what would the demand if you left your whole purse... With all your id in it?

Not everyone has id and what is acceptable to them? I don't think they are in a position to lay down conditions like this. Surely giving the name and details on the card and where and when it was lost is enough. Like I said the onus is on the cardholder to cancel a lost card, not on the shop to play banks.

Sirzy · 28/05/2012 22:49

Taking it easy - if the id was in the purse then it would mean they could easily identify the person there and then so no issue.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 22:53

Good point! But not everyone has photo id

McHappyPants2012 · 28/05/2012 22:57

Imagine if this was in reverse.

I am fuming I left my card in morrisons for them to give it to some random stranger, they have no cleared out my account and now got no money for formula, nappies and petrol for my husband to get to work I am only on smp so money is tight without dh missing work

AndWhenYouGetThere · 28/05/2012 22:58

There's usually photo id within a purse.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 23:02

That would be shit but like I've said its up to the card holder to cancel their card ASAP and that could happen if someone picked the card up.

takingiteasy · 28/05/2012 23:03

My purse doesn't have photo id in it. My mum and dad don't have photo driving licenses so none in their purses. Sure we're not alone!

Flyingwithoutwings · 28/05/2012 23:28

Can you double check that you have to use the card you paid with to access the tickets?
Reason I ask is that I have train tickets booked through work (when going away). Appreciate it's a different scenario but I was told "putting you card in just "wakes the machine up" and it's the reference number that triggers the info".
My work pays for my tickets (and a different company books them), but my I use my debit card to activate the machine and I am never charged for the tickets. Just pop in my reference number and out come the tickets.

Appreciate it might be different to personal bookings though.

manicbmc · 28/05/2012 23:54

Company policy would be to return it to the bank. He has refused to do that.

Purple2012 · 29/05/2012 00:02

He hasn't refused to give it to the bank. Op doesn't say what he said when she said send it to the bank.

manicbmc · 29/05/2012 00:06

She does. She said "The manager said he'd hold the card until I produced ID, we asked him to return it to the bank"

manicbmc · 29/05/2012 00:07

Yes, but he hasn't sent it to the bank, has he?

To me that read he said he would hold it until she produced id then she said to return it to the bank after that. She didn't actually say he refused to do that.

CadleCrap · 29/05/2012 09:32

ZEN Wrong thread perhaps Grin

differentnameforthis · 29/05/2012 12:33

There are ways that they can identify it as being her card with our ID.

Her name will be on there, as will her signature. They could let her buy something small & confirm it by using her pin. She could tell them part of her number/the expiry date.

The manager is being a jobsworth & with holding it unnecessarily, this could have been sorted easily, hours ago!
