..to be annoyed that my postman has written my house number in marker pen on my uPVC front door

Ok so I don't have the house number (3 digits) screwed up anywhere on my front door but ...after a few times of the post man putting next doors post through my door and me being in when this happens, I open the door and give it back to him and say this is for next door.

I've come home today so see my house number written in black marker pen on my white uPVC door. Not huge but still obvious!

Both my neighbours have their numbers on their doors so surely it's not that difficult to work out my number?

Must add .. Where I live you don't go in the front door often... We park at the back and come through the back garden. I do have my house number on my back gate so a number on the front would only be needed for a postman as all other deliveries etc come to the back.

OP posts:

I would be pissed off if someone wrote on my door in marker pen. However I used to do deliveries for a living and people that don't put numbers on their door used to really piss me off.
I would be very surprised if it was the postman TBH. Your's won't be the only door without a number on his route and he will deal with it.

SilentBoob · 27/05/2012 12:05

This reminds me of the house movers we once used who used a black permanent marker to write a/a, b/b etc on all the joins of our Ikea furniture so they would know how to reassemble it.

LineRunner · 27/05/2012 13:35

Mind you if the neighbours have got their house number displayed, they really should be getting their post delivered just fine, shouldn't they. Why would it end up at OP's house anyway?

How strange.

D0oinMeCleanin · 27/05/2012 13:42

We have no numbers. It's on my 'list of things I need to buy' but is one of those things that keeps getting bumped to the bottom of the list. My Dad is sign maker too and actually makes house signs and numbers. I still haven't got one Blush. In my defense I have ordered one several times but my number is on his list of 'signs for family members who are not paying full price' and keeps getting bumped to the bottom of his list in preference of paying customers Grin

I often get post for next door. I don't bother the postie with it. It's my problem I have no door number. I just post through the right door. It takes seconds out of my day. I think handing the mail back to him is a leetle bit PA. I'd be pissed off with you too, if I was him. Doesn't excuse what he did, though.

Salmotrutta · 27/05/2012 13:57

We don't have numbers on our door either - but we've only lived here 20 years.

We get post for someone in the next street sometimes because they have the same number, similar street name (avenue rather than terrace) but they appear to get wrongly addressed letters sent to our address.

That's quite annoying.

CrispyCod · 27/05/2012 14:01

Not read the whole thread so could be repeating here but.....how can you be getting someone else's post if they all have the numbers on their doors. Surely it will be your post going to the wrong address?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2012 14:40

Either put a number on your house or make arrangements to pick up your post from your local sorting office. Doing nothing is not an option and not putting a number on your house won't make it an 'exclusive property', you'll just continue to look ridiculous.

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 14:45

"...after a few times of the post man putting next doors post through my door "

next doors post through my door ??

But why does the postie deliver post to your neighbour when your neighbour has her number up?

QuintessentialShadows · 27/05/2012 14:46

That was meant to say: But why does the postie deliver post for your neighbour to you when your neighbour has her number up?

LineRunner · 27/05/2012 18:42

Exactly, Crispy and Quint. Exactly. A post-based mystery for Sunday teatime, no less.

VikingVagine · 27/05/2012 18:49

This happened to me, turns out it was DH who scrawled a massive number on our letter box. I had to repaint the box and bought a very cheap stick on number.

McHappyPants2012 · 27/05/2012 18:53

Why not have a number on there in the first

McHappyPants2012 · 27/05/2012 18:54

Place.

If you or dc need an ambulance ASAP it would make it difficult for the ambulance driver

AnyoneforTurps · 27/05/2012 19:02

YANBU but the postie (if it was him) INBU to be insanely irritated by you not having a number. I have to visit patients at home and, over the course of a year, I must lose at least an entire working day trying to find houses. Get a number Smile.

pengymum · 27/05/2012 19:04

To remove permanent marker pen: write over it with a drywipe pen and then wipe off! It works! Grin
I have heard hairspray works as well but never tried that.

Noqontrol · 27/05/2012 19:36

YANBU for being annoyed that someone wrote on your door. That would make me really cross.
YABU for handing the mail back to the postman rather than popping it through next doors letterbox.
And YABU for not having a door number up.

Chattymummyhere · 27/05/2012 20:39

YANBU! My house has no number landlord did not put one up and like hell am I paying for anything for him the horrible landlord he is! I always get my own post and my midwifes found me perfectly fine without a number on my door as both sides of me have numbers on their doors

KenHomsDadsWoksDead · 27/05/2012 22:31

It'll probably come off with nail varnish remover. Put something proper up instead though!

TrueBlueRMC · 29/05/2012 12:42

Although what the unknown person did by writing your house number on white PVC, they may have actually helped.

Most people don't know this but there is a legal requirement that the recognised house number must be displayed and visible from the highway. There is no ban on having a house name, but the number should be displayed as describe above.

As my local council advise in their literature: www.waverley.gov.uk/info/513/street_naming_and_numbering_register/164/house_naming_and_numbering-existing_houses The owner of the property is obliged to use the allocated house number in their postal address and to display the house number in a prominent position on the property so it is clearly visible from the road.

I am sure most councils will have the same obligation in line with the law.

snowybrrr · 15/01/2013 16:05

TheVermiciousKnid · 15/01/2013 16:08

You're not being very subtle, emlud - this is (at least) the second old thread you've revived in order to promote your company. Grin

DeafLeopard · 15/01/2013 16:12

HappyHippyChick · 15/01/2013 16:17
