..to be annoyed that my postman has written my house number in marker pen on my uPVC front door

Ok so I don't have the house number (3 digits) screwed up anywhere on my front door but ...after a few times of the post man putting next doors post through my door and me being in when this happens, I open the door and give it back to him and say this is for next door.

I've come home today so see my house number written in black marker pen on my white uPVC door. Not huge but still obvious!

Both my neighbours have their numbers on their doors so surely it's not that difficult to work out my number?

Must add .. Where I live you don't go in the front door often... We park at the back and come through the back garden. I do have my house number on my back gate so a number on the front would only be needed for a postman as all other deliveries etc come to the back.

She knows it was him, she can complain that he has defaced her front door!

I can't prove it was the postman But after twice giving the wrong post back to him I am guessing it was him. I have thought I must get some numbers since this has been happening, but it seems someone beat me to it!

I would just put some numbers up!

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 00:05

It would be a bit of a coincidence for some random vandal to decide to graffiti her house number on her door at such a time though wouldn't it slowest?

slowestwildebeast · 27/05/2012 00:09

Yes but not impossible, perhaps like others have suggested it was a peeved neighbour.

I'm just saying that they'll ask if you saw it or have any evidence, of which she has none.

What are they going to do? If they ask him if he's been scribbling on doors he's hardly likely to say he has.

5Foot5 · 27/05/2012 00:10

Erm - so you sometimes get post for the house next door mistakenly delivered to you and you can't be arsed to just pop round and push it through their letter box? Instead you antagonize the postman who, after all, can't be sure whether he was getting the right house given you don't make it very obvious.....

SwedishEdith · 27/05/2012 00:14

Oh, I'd be glad since it now gives you an excuse to replace the plastic door

TheUnMember · 27/05/2012 00:17

Acetone based nail varnish remover will get rid of it.

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 00:17

I agree the OP needs evidence it was him if she was going to complain slowest, but it was him wasn't it? Grin

Maybe writing the house number was all he could muster to claw back a bit of the totally shitty day he was having.

LineRunner · 27/05/2012 00:18

Why don't you have your number on your door? Out of interest.

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 27/05/2012 00:19

get it off with something containing alcohol. wait to see if it reappears. put as nnotice up about installing cctv after a spate of vandalism.

slowestwildebeast · 27/05/2012 00:26

You can't prove a thing :) but yes I guess it was him.

Probably cheered him up. OP will need to get CSA down to investigate further!

slowestwildebeast · 27/05/2012 00:28

CSA! god I hope not, oops!
CSI would be more useful, unless like they say... the postman always rings twice... but that's a whole Jeremy Kyle episode!

ImNotBeingUnreasonable · 27/05/2012 00:29

I think it was your neighbour, annoyed at getting their post late because you won't put numbers up.

LineRunner · 27/05/2012 00:38

...because everyone in my street has their number on the door. That's how we get our post correctly.

MarySA · 27/05/2012 00:49

I can see you are annoyed the postman has written on your door. YABU not to have the number of your house on your door. Who'd be a postman!

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 01:15

Hahaha at getting the CSA onto him slowest Grin

Any revelations you'd like to drip feed to the thread OP?

SandStorm · 27/05/2012 02:10

I know someone who had a visit from the police because their house number wasn't displayed so he was probably you doing you a round about favour.

PinkFondantFancy · 27/05/2012 04:17

So you get next door's post and instead of dropping it straight next door you wait days and give it back to the postman???

  1. YABU for making next door wait for their post
  2. YABU for not bothering to put your number on your door. I know it's on your back door but just put it on this one too!

Just stick some adhesive numbers over the top, job done. I think it was your neighbours - clearly you don't have a great relationship with them if you're so reluctant to give them their post back.....

mockingjay · 27/05/2012 06:50

YANBU in that the postman shouldn't write on your door. But if you don't really use it, and it's written neatly, does it really matter?

PinkfondantFancy, I thought the OP meant that she was in, so gave it straight back to the postman. Ours faffs about outside for so long that this would be perfectly possible where I am.

quoteunquote · 27/05/2012 09:24

Not having clearly displayed house number or name,is a massive bugbear of the ambulance service,

they reckon lack of clear signage really slows them down when attending emergencies,

this is a recognised problem, in quite a few countries it is illegal( our emergency services would like us to have some sort of legislation) not to have your house number clearly visible from the road, so no emergency services are slowed down,

maybe the postman has done you and your neighbours a favour, take the hint and buy a set of numbers, it might save a life one day.

redyam · 27/05/2012 09:34

I'm with the postman on this, you really need to display a number on your door! He has done something that you couldn't be bothered to do.

FartBlossom · 27/05/2012 09:45

Someone who I used to work with was always getting the wrong post and apparently he put up a notice on his door telling the postman (or lady) to post the letters correctly. Can't remember what it said, but it was quite rude IIRC.

OP - just get some numbers, it aint that hard.

Dprince · 27/05/2012 10:25

A complaint is pointless. You don't know it was him. It was probably your neighbours. They are possibly pissed off at waiting an extra day for post, because you can't be arsed to pop it through and wait for the postie. I imgaine your neighbours are more annoyed than the postie.

Sandalwood · 27/05/2012 10:39

I also think it was the neighbours.

AgentZigzag · 27/05/2012 11:42

Changing the law to make sure people put the number on their house would be a ridiculous waste of time and money, the emergency services have the same problems finding places whether they've got the numbers on or not.

Would the posters who think the law should change be alright with criminalising people who decide to only have their house name at the front?

Was the person who got a visit from the police in this country SandStorm? If there wasn't more to it than the house number, they really should be taking a look round at all the serious criminal activities going on around them instead of pissing about hassling people over their house number.
