I was 9lbs when I was born and my DS was 9lbs 3 , I know it is big but I thought anything below 10lbs is okay really.

apparently not , I was told I need a special consultant as I had a 'big baby before' I was a bit Shock Hmm I can understand 10/11/12lb being a bit concerning but 9lb!
AIBU to think this is slightly overboard.

Are they concerned that your next one will be bigger, did you have a vaginal birth.

UnCharteredromaeosaur · 24/05/2012 14:38

it's to monitor lots of things, not just the birth-weight of your baby - women who have large babies are more likely to have subsequent larger ones, so your next child could easily be 10lb (or smaller but they have to monitor anyway)

to keep an eye on gestational diabetes is a main factor.

cornflowers · 24/05/2012 14:38

I do think 9lbs is big, personally. I'd pronably describe it as being at the big end of average.

Psammead · 24/05/2012 14:39

Are you fairly big? Not meaning fat, but tall and wide pelvis etc? I am, and I think babies sometimes sort of grow to capacity. I was 8lb8oz, DD was 8,1, and the doctor said this one is going to be big, too. Quelle suprise.

teaaddict2012 · 24/05/2012 14:39

erm I suppose yeah I did sugarrice.

I had one over 10 lbs but I didn't get a specialist consultant the next time, just a glucose test.

They might be changing things though because of the whole obesity epidemic thing.

Nagooyocephale · 24/05/2012 14:39

IME I had a couple of appointments and a glucose test. The appointments were useful because I tore badly with my 9lb7 DS and I didn't realise how scared I was of getting stitched until the consultant talked to me about it.

My second was a 8lb15oz girl. A lot of people found it very humorous to go on about how the second was bound to be bigger Hmm

teaaddict2012 · 24/05/2012 14:40

I am both fat and big lol I'm 5'9 with size 9 feet and big hips lol.

yeah I'm 5'9 my dp is 6'5

I think 9lb is still quite a big baby but didnt think it was big in the obstetric world. Dc1 was 9lbs 4 and the doctors didnt worry when I was pregnant with dc2. But they should have been worried cause he was 10lbs 13oz. So I was offered additional scans when I was pregnant with dc3 - he turned out to be a tiddly 8lbs 6!

I would take the scans on offer but not much you can do to alter the weight of the baby is there?

littleducks · 24/05/2012 14:41

Seems pretty big to me as mine were 6lb 11oz and 6lb 13oz......... Why are babies still in pounds and ounces though as I haven't got a clue what that means in real terms!

SeaHouses · 24/05/2012 14:41

I should probably add that they gave me a scan at 39 weeks, estimated the baby was 8lbs and induced me on my due date the second time around.

thebody · 24/05/2012 14:41

My youngest dd was 9lb 6oz,mind u she was number 4!! So just coughed her out really!

My dh was 10lb and his dad was a stone and was in local paper in 1939.

So urnbu. But best of luck babe

SCOTCHandWRY · 24/05/2012 14:41

I had 2 DS of 9lb5 and 9lb 6, a little un of 8lb 11, and a tiny one of 6lb5 (born 2 weeks earlier than the others who were all term+).

I assume they will want to test your blood sugar, and check baby is not at risk of the serious consequence which MAY happen if your blood sugar is too high and the baby gets a "hypo" after birth.

Not the case with any of mine - some people just have big babies, but I'm glad they were on the ball and offering screening just in case.

BellaVita · 24/05/2012 14:42

Well is suppose it is if you are teeny tiny like me... And they were both back to back babies.

DS1 was 9lb 4 and DS2 was 9lb 5.5

Firawla · 24/05/2012 14:42

my 2nd one was big - 9.5lb and the midwife thought may have been due to undiagnosed gdd, because my 1st was 7.5 and thats quite a jump 7lbish to 9lb+.. so was tested for diabetes on my 3rd one and i did end up having it, so that was managed and he ended up only 6lb. so i would not be suprised if they want to do the gtt, but if that comes back fine not sure what the need for consultant care would be

oopsi · 24/05/2012 14:42

9lbs 3 is big for a first baby

SeaHouses · 24/05/2012 14:42

They will probably want you to lose weight then.

WenTheEternallySurprised · 24/05/2012 14:44

My reaction was "It's bloody huge!" but then again my DC were between 6 and 6 and a half pounds. Grin

teaaddict2012 · 24/05/2012 14:44

I've always been confused about that,

surely the first one is bigger as you can laze more with no other kids to run about after.

Sirzy · 24/05/2012 14:44

As my Ds was 3 months before he weighed that I class it as being a big baby!

Moominsarescary · 24/05/2012 14:44

My first was 11lb 2, 2nd was 5 weeks early and 3rd was 8 weeks early and 4lb 4. I'd rather have big babies than tiny ones.

Pooka · 24/05/2012 14:45

Was her your first?

My heaviest of the three was 7 lb 13 (7 days late). Dd, my first, was 6 10 on her due date.

Hulababy · 24/05/2012 14:45

DD was 6lb15oz at 2 weeks overdue, so yes - I would consider 9lbs pretty big.

What's average? About 7.5?

CuppaTeaJanice · 24/05/2012 14:48

My first was 10lb 4oz. I wasn't given a special consultant for the second, just a glucose tolerance test and two extra scans because my BMI is below 18 so they wanted to make sure baby 2 wasn't too small! Hmm
