I was 9lbs when I was born and my DS was 9lbs 3 , I know it is big but I thought anything below 10lbs is okay really.

apparently not , I was told I need a special consultant as I had a 'big baby before' I was a bit Shock Hmm I can understand 10/11/12lb being a bit concerning but 9lb!
AIBU to think this is slightly overboard.

I think 9lb is big

I am 5ft 9ins and mine were 7lb 5, 8lb 3 and 7lb 7

McKayz · 24/05/2012 16:04

DS2 was 10lb 5oz. All I've had to do is have a gestational diabetes test. I then started to measure about 4cm big. U had a growth scan at 30 weeks and they gave an estimated weight of 9lb 14oz and MW said that is within the average range.

I am having another scan tomorrow to check growth and presentation.

I was told anything under 10lb is considered average. I can't remember the lower end of average.

hecatetrivia · 24/05/2012 16:06

my first was 10lb4oz and my second 10lb5oz. They were MASSIVE! They looked huge at the side of the other 6-7lb babies. My neice was over 9lb and she was a right bruiser too! So yes, I think a 9lber is quite big.

revolutionconfirmed · 24/05/2012 16:10

I don't feel it's big. DD1 was 9lb7oz at 39 weeks and I was monitored for DD2 who was almost 9lb (8lb11oz) at 38 weeks. They don't seem like big babies to me but people are horrified like I must have a magical vagina to still be standing after a baby that big.

BigBoobiedBertha · 24/05/2012 16:11

I measured small for my 9lber (I'm 5ft 7" so not that tall) - it seems there is no exact science for predicting a baby's weight. If you pass your glucose tolerance test and everything else is fine you have to wonder why the want to refer you.

Have to agree that head circumference is the main thing. Both of mine had and still have big head of approximately the same size despite the 2.5lb difference in their weights.

BigBoobiedBertha · 24/05/2012 16:15

hecate - we were asked to guess the weight of our 9lber before the MW weighed him and as he didn't look that much bigger than his 6lb 9oz brother, we reckoned on about 7.5lbs. We were a bit surprised when the MW guessed 9lb and was right. He didn't seem that big at all. I suppose length is an issue in the bruiser stakes.Smile

Yeah, she was a chunky monkey Grin

and for the first 2 years of her life, she looked just like les dawson Grin

ratspeaker · 24/05/2012 16:24

Eldest half an ounce over 8lb
2nd 9lb 7oz
3rd 7lb 15oz
4th 7lb 13oz

2nd was long and always big for his age
now got size 13 feet 6ft 4ins at last measure

gnocci · 24/05/2012 16:32

First DC was 9lb.

Currently 23weeks preg and no mention of anything as regards his weight or having any diabetes test?? Saying that my BMI is healthy so maybe that's why!

He was back to back but managed a drug free normal delivery (although A LOT of stitches...)

This DC is a DD so might be smaller????

MamaMaiasaura · 24/05/2012 16:34

YABU, look at centile charts. 9lb is definitely larger than average by a fair bit.

fatlazymummy · 24/05/2012 16:36

I think 9 pounds is big. My 1st baby was 9 pounds and that was considered bigger than average then [23 years ago], especially as I am only 5' 4''.
My 2nd was 7 pounds 6 ounces [I had the GTT done with him] and my 3rd was 7 pounds 12ounces.
I think the concern is that bigger birthweight babies may be more at risk of metabolic cardiovascular syndrome. I know my consultant at my 2nd and 3rd births was quite concerned about this and often recommended induction if the baby appeared big on scans.

McKayz · 24/05/2012 16:36

Mama, it isn't actually bigger than average. Anywhere on the chart is average. It is when they go off either the bottom or top of the chart they are outside of average.

ds1 9lb3
ds2 11lb
tds3 6lb8
tds4 7lb 11

they told me anything over 10lb was too big for my pelvis as i had ds1 by emcs and had xray after, when i went back with ds2 they refused to scan me and told me he was small, told the doc you told me that with ds1 and he was over 9lb,got told 9lb is avg nowadays we wont scan you, went 2 weeks late with ds2 in & out of labour, waters broke day before due to go in to be induced, ended up with another emcs cos his heartrate dropped and he was 11lb,no way he would have got out, midwife was so cross they hadnt scanned me cos it could have saved a lot of hassle and nearly losing him.

MamaMaiasaura · 24/05/2012 16:40

I took 50th centile as average, so with 9lb I think iirc it around 95th centile. That means 95% of babies are lighter, therefore baby is larger than the average on 50th centile.

All my 3 have been up on 91/95 centile and were all considered large babies tho not elephants Grin
Ds1 38 weeks 8lb12
Ds2 39 weeks 8lb14
Dd 40 weeks on EDD

For all 3 i had consultant led care

BigBoobiedBertha · 24/05/2012 16:44

hecate - poor little thingSmile. Was that just your personal image of her or a family wide one?

I am 46 and I am still know as the Michelin Man in our family as there is a lovely photo of me with rolls of fat all down my arms and legs at about 10 mths. Nobody seems to have forgotten I was 10lb 6oz

If it was a nickname shared by the family, I suppose at least people will forget Les Dawson over time. Bloody Michelin still has their little fat man on their logo to haunt me forever! Grin

ElizabethPonsonby · 24/05/2012 16:46

Dd was 8lb 10.5oz, I was told I was measuring small and she would be 6.5-7lb Hmm she also had a massive head and was ventoused out!

I was not encouraged when the midwife told me that 2nd babies are often up to 1lb heavier....

5madthings · 24/05/2012 16:49

i dont think its that big, my smallest was my last baby, she was only 8lb and seemed positively teeny after my 9lb+ boys and ds4 was 10lb 13oz, his was also the easiest birth, took an hour and he was born in birthing pool :)

bizarrely i had extra scans in my first few pregnancies as they thought baby was small, they predicted 6-7lb 9lb 3oz and 9lb 5oz so err not great predictions there then!

i thought ds4 was big but was thinking he would be 9lb 8oz or something so was very suprised at 10lb 13oz, i am only 5 2 and fairly petite, so for me that was big BUT the midwives have always said i have good childbearing hips and i have certainly always laboured and delivered easily.

i had to laugh at the consultant i saw when preg wth no 5 (was seeing consultant as had pnp after no 4) and he looked at me, and without even looking at my notes, said 'oh you are here to get booked in for a c section then if baby is over 9lb you wont be able to deliver naturally' at which point i told him HAD he read my notes he woudl see taht i have delivered 4 babies all over 9lb and the last one had been almost 11lb and born naturally in birthing pool. he said i had got lucky and am too small to deliver big baby...

he insisted on a growth scan to check size of baby no 5 as i said i wouldnt be having a section unless medically needed at the birth, scan said about 9lb-9lb5oz i said no, i could feel she was smaller than that having had big babies before. she was bang on 8lb.

i didnt think they counted a baby as 'big' unless it was over 9lb 9oz or something? certainly after having ds4 at 10lb 13oz nothing was flagged up at all the midwives just saw that he had been delivered fine, as had my other 3 babies and werent concerned at all :)

McKayz · 24/05/2012 16:49

Mama, I am having a big baby but the midwives and consultant I have seen in the past few weeks have all told me that every baby that is born at a weight that is on the chart is an average weight. So she is going to be big but still within average.

5madthings · 24/05/2012 16:50

oh and the national average is 7bl 6oz i think but that obviously includes averages taken from premmies etc as well?

glastocat · 24/05/2012 16:51

It is when you are 5 ft 2! I ended up in the special care unit with my 9lb 3ozer, the baby in the next bed was 3lb, so mine looked gigantic! When the consultant came round he pointed out the disparity, causing the other poor mum to burst into tears!

JoandMax · 24/05/2012 16:53

My 1st was 9lb 3oz at 38.5 weeks - I'd expected it though as both DH and I come from families of big babies!

DS2 was 10lb 15.5oz at 38.5 weeks so a fairly big jump, I'd been tested for GD twice and all was fine but he was considered macrosomic so abnormally large whereas DS1 was big but normal.

I've been told I would have closer monitoring if I got pregnant again and potentially only go to 37 weeks if baby was seeming to be huge again!

notcitrus · 24/05/2012 16:54

I'm sure they've got more fussy about this. Growing up I always heard about 10-pounders being 'large' but normal bonny bouncing babies. But I might be a bit skewed as my dad and uncle were 14 and 15 pounds! I know this is no exaggeration as I've seen the news clipping about uncle being largest baby in the county.

I was relieved to be constantly told I had average babies, both spot on national average at birth, 7 lb something.

meh-try 13lb for size :) He don't seem all that big to me, he's my boy.

My first dd was 9lb 4 but if, (similar to you) you're 5ft 11 with size 8 feet you aint gonna make small babies. Like you i was monitored this time but they still didn't pick up on exactly how big he was going to be so its fairly moot. My specialist care this time amounted to a glucose tolerance test (- in both cases) and a few extra scans.
