I was 9lbs when I was born and my DS was 9lbs 3 , I know it is big but I thought anything below 10lbs is okay really.

apparently not , I was told I need a special consultant as I had a 'big baby before' I was a bit Shock Hmm I can understand 10/11/12lb being a bit concerning but 9lb!
AIBU to think this is slightly overboard.

I'd consider 9lbs to be the bigger side of average. But I have 4, my smallest was 10lbs 5oz and my biggest was 11lbs 10oz.
I'm tall, fat and wide so would go with the growing to capacity theory!

BigBoobiedBertha · 24/05/2012 14:50

I had a 9lber but I didn't think he was big, although some people commented. His birth was far easier than his big brother at 6lb 9oz. I was 10lb 6oz at birth, my younger brother was 9lb 12oz so that colours my opinion a bit! My poor auntie who is only 5ft 2" had a 10lb too. On the other side of the family my dad was one of triplets. Only two were born alive and both were over 7lbs and the 3rd was not very big at all and apparently died a long time before the birth (this was 80 yrs ago). My poor grandmother was carrying a shocking amount around with them.

I don't think given your size that there is any particular reason for concern so I suppose it is a bit overboard. They should definitely take the size of the parents and family history of baby size into account before they start worrying.

It might be the MW being over cautious. I can imagine the consultant giving you the once over and sending you on your way.

vezzie · 24/05/2012 14:53

I had a 9lb1 dc1. I was told I had to have consultant care in my pregnancy with dc2 and they fussed a lot throughout pregnancy and completely did my head in without suggesting any actual plan of how to manage a big baby or a potential tear or whatever. (I hardly saw the much vaunted consultant, but a series of more junior drs none of whom agreed with each other or was willing or able to make any decisions or tell me when they might be made, by whom) I lost it at 39 weeks and begged and begged to leave all that stress and go to the MLU (had HB with dc1). I was crying and shouting and that caused me to actually get some attention (tut tut, rewarding bad behaviour, only encouraging me) and I was "allowed" to go to MLU when I went into labour. Best decision I ever made. dc2 was born in the water, only 8lb, one or 2 stitches, we were all home 3 hours later.

Don't worry. stress is your enemy. try to be logical although no one else is and acccept that you will have to make all the decisions.

porcamiseria · 24/05/2012 14:54

wow at MOOMINS mega baby!

and as for thebodys FIL!!!!!!

I dont get the deal, DS2 was 9.5lb really, whats a few millimetres for an already stretched vagina?

Psammead · 24/05/2012 14:55

Oh, well, if youa re that tall, and so is your DP, then it's hardly surprising that you will have a bigger baby than average.

startail · 24/05/2012 14:57

Waves at Littleducks and Hulababy,

DD1 6 lb 2.5 oz (now 14, and taller than meGrin)

DD2 6 lb 6.5 oz (11 and borrows my shoes, I expect she'll be taller than me soon)

So 9pm sounds big, but it's not uncommon, I think my two being that weight at 39+ is rarer.

Buckingfiatch · 24/05/2012 15:00

My first was 4 weeks premature, 6lbs 3oz. Second was full term, 9lbs 7oz. I tore badly with second, but his head was HUGE and also he was back to back (typical male, making it awkward for me)

But yes, I don't think it is really that big. I would say between average and big.

Vassia · 24/05/2012 15:03

I would say it depends on the size of the mother. My DS was 9lbs 13oz, and I'm pretty small. Everyone seemed to be quite shocked at his size (not as shocked as me!) I thank the sky above for c-sections though, I would dread to think what would have happened down there otherwise! I would welcome all the consultant/extra care I could get for the next one if it ends up being bigger.

But like someone else said, I'd much rather have a big baby than a tiny one, and I count myself lucky I have such a strong and healthy little maniac. Even if he did leave a total bombscare behind #mybodyisruined

wheredidiputit · 24/05/2012 15:04

DD1 9lb 4oz and verrrrrrrrry long no problems. 3 contraction to push her out. 1 week early

DD2 9lb 2oz Induced a week late cord around her neck.

DS 8lb Induced 2 weeks late. Back to back labour (pulled all my back muscle ). Rushed to theatre ae he got stuck.

For me I have to say it how big the babies head is.

Flisspaps · 24/05/2012 15:04

No, having had an 11 1/2 lber, 9lb seems pretty average to me.

PatriciaHolm · 24/05/2012 15:04

According to www.cowandgate.co.uk/my_baby/my_babys_health/article/baby_weight this]

Average baby weight at birth in the UK is 7lb 5oz, with most babies being between 5lb 8 and 9lb 14. So by that, a 9lber is definitely on the upper end.

Mine were 6lb 7 and 7lb 6 so to me 9lb sounds huge Grin

anastaisia · 24/05/2012 15:17

I'd be a bit dubious about them not waiting for any other indications before deciding you need consultant led care. NICE guidelines don't count a baby as 'macrosomic' until 9lb15 and that's quite a bit over your baby. And then you say you're tall and big yourself too so it makes sense your babies might be above average size.

NICE also say:
"In the absence of any other indications, induction of labour should not be carried out simply because a healthcare professional suspects a baby is large for gestational age (macrosomic)."

blackcurrants · 24/05/2012 15:20

DS was 9lb and everyone made a big deal of how huge he was. He was just long - is still 98th percentile for height now, at 2.

I'm heading for my second and (both tall and fat!) they want me to to a glucose tolerance test but otherwise aren't too fussed. Am trying to lay off the sweets a bit, don't want this one to be any bigger. But would feel cheated if he or she was tiny - I'd worry I'd done something wrong! :)

TheSmallPrint · 24/05/2012 15:31

I'm 5'10 and DH is 6'5" first DC was 8lb 7 followed by a 10lb 1oz, the second delivery was easier than the first (although we won't talk about the care Angry ), Noone gave me any special care but I think that as long as the baby isnt proper mahoosive (like the 14lb one mentioned up thread) it's much of a muchness delivering an 8 pounder as a heavier baby. And as long as you don't have a teeny frame of course.

rainbow2000 · 24/05/2012 15:40

My ds 1 was 8lb 12 i was told he would be bout 6lb
ds2 was 8lb 10 a week early
ds3 was 9lb 2 his head was huge and the only one i got stitches on got the gd test on him it was negative
ds4 was 9lb 13 had him withventose
ds5 was 8lb 12 a week early ihad gd on him and was on insulin had c setion on him

Dp was 10lb born
I was 3lb born

takingiteasy · 24/05/2012 15:40

Just delivered my second 9lb baby and never had a stitch. Both times the midwives congratulated me. I think that was their way of saying I have a wizards sleeve for a fanny. Which isn't true. Honest. It's just stretchy.

TheCunningStunt · 24/05/2012 15:44

My second baby was a 9 pounder. She came put really easily! Lovely water birth 3 hours start to finish. First was an 8 pounder. Lots of problems there. No special care for second either....no one said she would be that big...I think I had a tidy bump so I guess there was no reason to suspect? No idea....

Fleurdebleurgh · 24/05/2012 15:45

My first was 10lbs 4oz and i had no special consultant for my second (although had a GTT i scraped through)

My 2nd was 9lbs 10oz.

takingiteasy · 24/05/2012 15:47

I had 3 of those fucking awful GTT's, was measuring 'big' until I seen another midwife who said I was spot on, and growth scans, all to determine my baby may be 'slightly bigger than average' but considering my first was that was no suprise. So after all that fucking about and yet another appointment with a consultant she concluded 'maybe I'm just desgined to have bigger babies'.

Funny that.

Fleurdebleurgh · 24/05/2012 15:48

"Its just like Lucozade, dont worry"

Is it bollocks.

MmeBucket · 24/05/2012 15:50

It's not that big. DS was a 9 lb baby, and I'm not big at all, and he was a 3 hour birth with no complications. I didn't have anything special for my 2nd one, which was good, because she was only 7lb 8 oz.

takingiteasy · 24/05/2012 15:51

I had to go through the indignity of having to sit in the waiting room to drink the cheap lucozade. I offered to just by my own and drink it really quickly in the car but no, I got a foosty old plastic jug filled with the shit and a paper cup. I hid in a corner at 9am in what must be the busiest doctors in the world trying not to burp too loudly. 3 bloody times. Sailed through them each time as well. I think I had the twitchiest midwife ever.

takingiteasy · 24/05/2012 15:52

I was 3 hours with mine too - must be a 9lber thing!

Mine was a smidge short of 10lb. I know I never sat down for around two weeks and I had a nice production line going in frozen sanny pads! Bloody nightmare and probably goes a long way to explaining why I stopped at one!
