to think that when people say that they're entitled to thier opinion...

... that they are really just saying that they don't feel you're entitled to challenge it?

It happens a lot in online debates in all the forums I belong to (Yes, I'm a forum tramp!) and it really annoys me. They put an opinion up, I challenge it and then they hit back with how entitled the are to think what they want. Yes, they are. But I am equally entitled to tell them that I don't like it.

Why do people bother to say that? I'm not negating thier right to an opinion by disagreeing with it so why why WHY?!

YANBU and I'm entitled to my opinion on that! Grin

I was just thinking about you today OP...thinking I hadn't seen you around for a while Shock

Triggles · 23/05/2012 22:28

Well, we can hardly argue with you now, can we? Or you'll just say we think we're entitled to it.... Grin

Kewcumber · 23/05/2012 22:28

It's been a refrain of mine from time to time on here

"I'm entitled to my opinion"
"Yes and I'm entitled to challenge it - its called a debate"

kittyandthefontanelles · 23/05/2012 22:29

Their, not thier.

Kewcumber · 23/05/2012 22:29

I have even used a similar line in real life -

"yes you're entitled to your opinion but there's no obligation on me to stand here and listen to it"

[brave emoticon]

Missed ya Worra :)

I saw something on FB that prompted me to post this thread. it was one of those word-pictures that said "Of course you are entitled to disagree with me. I can't force you to be right!"

It gave me a giggle but got me thinking on the whole topic in general. I've been on at leat 3 threads tonight where someone has said that to me! At first I just dismissed it but the more I see it the more I wonder what the person who says it is trying to say. Either come back with a counter-argument or move on because I KNOW you're entitled to your opinion.

And breeeeeeeeeeeeeathe!!!

it's a dull way for dull people who haven't reasoned through their opinion to justify why they think what they do. It's lazy and ignorant

MorrisZapp · 23/05/2012 22:32

Christ, it's wearing isn't it.

I've seen it endlessly on other forums. 'so and so had a go at me just for having an opinion'.

Er, no they didn't, you tedious idiot. They disagreed with you.

Fairly obvious difference, to most rational people.

AutumnSummers · 23/05/2012 22:32

Kitty, I have a boat load of word-pictures for pedants that you would literally cream over.

What's a word-picture? Do you mean a rebus? Sorry, Autumn, I couldn't ignore two of them!

ExpatAl · 23/05/2012 22:36

YANBU. Also I hate people saying that they're just being 'devils advocate' - my arse - they just want to say something mean.

Sirzy · 23/05/2012 22:37

Just as annoying is when people post "well your entitled to your opinion" well that's nice of you to give me permission to have an opinion!

AutumnSummers · 23/05/2012 22:37

kitty I mean those pictures that people share on FB that are literally just phrases with no actual pictures.

I'll dig a few of the grammar ones out. I really do have loads.
