to understand why newbies feel unwelcome when there's a certain group of people on here that think mumsnet is all about them?

I really do understand why there is a 'flouncers corner' on this site and I understand why people feel the need to go to it!
Six months ago I joined this site and on my first ever thread there was about 10 people who all clearly knew eachother and started their own conversation and completely ignored me! I felt really unwelcome but just thought it was a one off. Ever since then I've begun to realise that its like school on here and theres the 'popular' group who seem to think that everyone should know who they are and so they just hijack everyone elses thread and talk amongst themselves ignoring other people in the process! I was even in a thread yesterday and there was a discussion and one of the popular ones said something along the lines of ' oh its jack, havent seen you for a while, hows your dad?'
To me that was rude and if you know eachother that well then shouldn't you be emailing or private messaging instead of being so rude? I can honestly say I have said something regarding to what the OP was asking and been completely ignored by what send like the usual lot talking about scones or something Hmm
Another thing which I hate is all the private jokes flying around which is between the usual lot and no one else. Fanjo??? Grow up!
The only time people seem to get noticed is when they have changed their name to something like one of the popular peoples names! Remember the whole 'whos impersonating sue's thing yesterday??? seems like thats all people cared about as yiu are sooo popular so

OP posts:

I haven't read the whole thread but I do think there are a number of people who are utterly convinced of their own righteousness and if you digress from the accepted line (from shape of trouser to the ins and out of the relationships of people we/they/you don't know)you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Instead of playing nicely they can resort to the very sort of bullying behaviour that they often complain about. (Telling you to fuck off, for example, which in itself I don't mind, but can seem rather hypocritical in some contexts.)
Anyway, on a lighter note, I made the cheesey muffins fromthe low-carb thread yesterday and very nice they are too :)

Oh my god the classics are vagineing hilarious! I've been at my desk with a hangover for an hour and I had to stop reading cos i was crying with laughter.

I can't bake. forwhat its worth :(

I think if you hang out in AIBU you get a skewed version of what the site is about. Every so often you'll get a random pasting elsewhere, but I suspect anyone lashing out has worse problems than me. In a site this big there are bound to be some unpleasant people but most people are lovely.

I often don't get the joke and I post often. I missed the whole bat thing for example. However I don't worry about it in the slightest or feel persecuted.

I feel like I 'know' quite a few people on here because we've chatted, exchanged PMs or a FB friends. I don't think that makes me sad or that I have an empty life. Online is just a different medium. If I met some of these people (and btw since when has 'mum' been a dirty word FayeGovan?) online or in a cafe or playgroup does it really matter?

I agree that some people are very rude.

BIWItheBold · 24/05/2012 09:52

Oh, I missed the insult about 'mums'. How very unpleasant, FayeGovan

Confuses me, people coming on here faye just to say they are too marvellous to come on an internet forum?

Don't get it.

I have a real life and proper human friends without batteries and everything, but I work from home three days a week on my own, and I miss all the talking shit I used to do in the office.

If that makes me a "saddo" then I am not really bothered.

Can you leQ?

Now you have made me jealous. I cna only do a handstand and a cartwheel.

KatieMiddleton · 24/05/2012 10:09

I am hypermobile and I can't do the splits. I used to be able to put both legs behind my head but there's little call for that these days. Plus a significant risk of getting stuck.

I do a good sofa surf.

Hullygully · 24/05/2012 10:10

I used to be a gymnast

FeakAndWeeble · 24/05/2012 10:12

I can put both big toes up my nostrils (one in each, I don't have enormous nostrils).

TobyLerone · 24/05/2012 10:13

Same, hully. A gymnast, a ballet dancer, a baton twirler and a competitive showjumper. You can only imagine how much I mourn for my late-teens body :(

I can still do the splits, though.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 10:13

I haven't read the whole thread (breaks on of own cardinal rules) but I can sort of see where the op is coming from (not how she phrased it though).

I remember when I first came on Mumsnet over 5 yrs ago I felt often that when I posted I was shouting in a cave - no fucker acknowledged what I said and everyone had conversations over the top of my head, so to speak. And it was annoying and felt cliquey.

Now I suppose I am guilty of the same - but it is not meant out of spite. And I would never deliberately ignore anyone - but sometimes when you are on athread and you see someone whose jokes you have laughed at for years, it is normal to want to speak to them. If you can't make virtual friendships on here then what's the point?

Hullygully · 24/05/2012 10:14

AND A COMPETITVE SHOWJUMPER?

TobyLerone · 24/05/2012 10:15

Stupid babies put paid to that, hully. Now I am just a 'mum' :(

Hullygully · 24/05/2012 10:15

I got BAGA 1

A small triumph

The dc made me do a cartwheel the other day after i had lots of wine I sadly forgot that there was a lot more of me and couldn't bear my own weight.

Oh the pain and shame

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 10:16

I am also proud of being a mum
