To think those champagne/wine glasses with stems and no bottoms are stupid?

I'm just watching come dine with me. I've noticed a few people seem to have those glasses that you have to hold or put in a stand. You can't put them down anywhere apart from in the stand. That would really annoy me. So does anyone actually have them, if so why?? Confused

YANBU. They're utterly ridiculous and they're not 'proper' glasses.

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than have a reputation of owning champagne glasses like that Grin

There will be a rash of them in charity shops soon, where the giant brandy glasses and painted wineglasses currently are.

I think they were originally designed for picnics where you just dig the glass in the grass when you're not using it.

Equally pointless though.

YANBU

Now you've mentioned it, I've vaguely remembered being at some party somewhere where we were given champagne in those stupid things - it was a joke. As you say, you've either got to find a 'stand' to put them into (and they never stand upright anyway) or wander around with a glass-with-no-bottom in your hand

chrome · 22/05/2012 20:48

Trashy, yanbu!

MrsHelsBels74 · 22/05/2012 20:51

At first I thought they were pretty then the practicalities dawned on me & I realised how annoying they would be.

Suzietastic · 22/05/2012 20:54

YABU why would you want to put it down?? rolls eyes

lololizzy · 22/05/2012 20:56

there ARE a rash of them in charity shops. MY charity shop. And customers look at them, don't put them back on the bric & brac shelf properly, and they roll onto floor (and often get trodden on) I HATE THEM!!!!

Saltire · 22/05/2012 21:07

I was once at a v posh party in someones house and they had those glasses. I need the loo so I stuck the glass in beside the yukka! Grin

BatmanLovesRobin · 22/05/2012 21:36

My inlaws got some for their wedding. They looked lovely, and were used precisely once. They're a right bugger in terms of practicality.

clam · 22/05/2012 21:58

Many years ago, my parents went to a drinks do with a "collector" type person. He told my mother that those glasses were designed for huntsmen, who would lean down from their horses to pick up an upside down glass from a tray, hold it out for the waiter to fill. As he was on horseback, he would have no need to put the glass down anywhere until he'd finished the drink, at which point he'd just hand it back to the waiter.

Jude89 · 22/05/2012 22:11

I thought they were to stop you leaving your drink unattended and letting it get spiked?

Didn't realise they were decorative!
