To ask has anyone else made a bad choice with Godparents, and how long before you regretted it?

I asked my cousin, and I regret my decision from the day of my DC's christening. GM's behaviour was weird on the day and has only got worse.

Anyone else been in similar circumstances?

I find it really interesting that people think being a GP is about days out and presents, or it's totally pointless.

I have never asked any sets of GP's or sponsors to do any of those things and nor will I. I picked them to give my DC's a person to give them guidance and a strong presence in their lives, should they need it.
Anything expected on top of that should be made clear before they undertake the role.

Sorry Bobyan, I went to bed!

I'm not hinting at anything. I am trying to find out how GP's are recruited and how they are briefed as to what the expectations of the role are.

If they take part in a religious service when none of the occupants is actually religious and they promise to guide the child in terms of their religious upbringing then I can't help but think that they will fail in their role.

If what people want is to pick good role models for spiritual guidance in a non-religious context (as people have outlined above) then I'm sure that there is greater chance of success.

What are GP's supposed to do?

I was Christened so I assume that there were godparents, but I couldn't tell you who they were.

Does this mean anything anymore?

viggle in terms of 'outlining duties';

I wouldn't have choosen someone, where that was necessary. I am very good friends either my dcs gf, and feel its all pretty intuitive, given that we know each other so well, and are involved in each others lives for many many years
