To not want my daughters' primary school to run a Nail Club (fingernail painting)?

It's one of the official after-school clubs. All the girls want to go. It's so popular they've had to limit it to years 5 & 6.

I've nothing against nail varnish, just think it's not a suitable primary school club and the time could be better used.

YANBU... And you can just say no

WorraLiberty · 18/05/2012 13:21

I suppose it depends on why they're running it.

They might have asked the kids/school council what they'd like and perhaps that's what they came up with?

YourFanjoIsNotAHandbag · 18/05/2012 13:22

It's a club, it's not compulsory is it?

Why do you think it shouldnt be available?

EdithWeston · 18/05/2012 13:22

YANBU.

We have nail painting (and other titivating) stalls at the summer fete, and I don't mind that. But I think it's a dreadful idea for an after school club.

Selks · 18/05/2012 13:22

YANBU

RedBlanket · 18/05/2012 13:24

Nail varnish club? WTF? I thought girls only netball at our school was bad enough.
Let's encourage the girls to sit on their arses and think about how to make themselves look pretty!

Frontpaw · 18/05/2012 13:24

So they are 9/10ish? I would rather they did a painting (on canvas) or baking club!

Bodkin · 18/05/2012 13:27

It was an idea the kids came up with themselves, and one of the parents was happy to run it. I've raised my points with the head, but she doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

I realise that I don't have to let my children go to the club, but it is taking up the time of a club that could be more beneficial.

Can they get a spray tan and Brazilian while they're having their nails done?

Bodkin · 18/05/2012 13:29

Thank you RedBlanket & FrontPaw - exactly how I feel about it.

EdithWeston - yup, same here, no problem with it at school fetes and discos.

But if they were asked for ideas and they picked this, found a parent to run it for free, how can you go to the head and ask for it to be withdrawn?

Did they close a more worthwhile club for this one?

Debeez · 18/05/2012 13:30

Will they watch Geordie Shore while they're on?

FFS Why?! Of all the facilities schools have available, playgrounds, computers, classrooms, sports equipment, art supplies, musical instruments lovely staff willing to stay late. Nail painting. YANBU. This makes me want to weep.

Frontpaw · 18/05/2012 13:30

Why not an entrepreneur club? That would be great for kids. Encouraging them to try different things, raise money for charity...

Debeez · 18/05/2012 13:31

Oh great idea Frontpaw!

They could do basic accounting, advertising and run their own little stalls at the school fair. Mind if I pass this on to PTA?

Iwantcandy · 18/05/2012 13:31

YANBU! Totally inappropriate for an after school club - no educational merit and sounds like a great way to create a little clique of girls with painted nails and make the rest feel left out

Bodkin · 18/05/2012 13:32

There is currently no chess / art / sewing / computer club.

FrothyOM · 18/05/2012 13:32

YABU It's harmless fun.

YourFanjoIsNotAHandbag · 18/05/2012 13:33

Non contact boxing has no educational merit but it's after school club

Bodkin · 18/05/2012 13:34

The head has responded that anyone is welcome to suggest and run a club, provided the necessary health and safety has been complied with.

I'm thinking of offering Lard Arse club.

mumeeee · 18/05/2012 13:34

YABU Afterschool clubs don't have to be educational they are for fun. The girls get to socialise and have fun. It's not full on make up just a bit of nail varnish and a lot of 10 year old girls like doing that.

Bodkin · 18/05/2012 13:34

Entrepreneur club sounds brilliant. Will suggest.

Is nail varnish against the school rules? It is at DD's school so a nail painting club would be very pointless as they would have to wash it off before school the next day! YANBU.

Sandalwood · 18/05/2012 13:35

Are the children asking for chess/art/sewing/computor?
Would you be happy to run one?

FauxFox · 18/05/2012 13:35

Agree with frothy it sounds like the kids want a club which is more like a youth club just to hang out and chat rather than having to do educational and improving things...nothing wrong with that imo though nail painting may get boring quite quickly and they might want to provide a roster of different activities to have on offer.

Debeez · 18/05/2012 13:36

Non contact boxing covers fitness and discipline though. Sport clubs have merit in that children who lives in areas with little or no safe outdoor play space have an opportunity to burn off some energy and keep healthy.

Does the person running it by any chance have a salon/beauty shop? I.e. This is a massive marketing ploy?
