to go on strike until I am provided with a computer that ACTUALLY BLOODY WORKS?!

FYI. The answer, unless you have a death wish, is no.

I hate computers. This one in particular. I am typing each sentence here and sitting back and waiting for it to catch up with me.

I am unable to edit my website. It took 2 hours to do an edit that should normally take half an hour. What with frozen screens, and info not loading and all that and don't get me STARTED on the speed or lack thereof of the internet connection.

I am self employed and also work for my husband's business.I want a new computer. We cannot afford a new computer but I want one anyway. I cannot be expected to work under these conditions. And then there's that wonderful moment when I apply changes to an article and I get the message "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" and I have to be physically restrained from chucking a brick through the bloody screen.

We have a bloody ISO audit coming up. How the holy hell am I suposed to get ready for that when I would actually be better off etching info into ruddy SLATE than working on this damned thing.

Do you want to know how long it's taken me to post this? FIFTEEN BLEEDING MINUTES!

I can type over 70 words a minute - I should not be sitting here waiting for a pigging computer to frigging well CATCHUP!

Apparently, since there's nothing to be done but put up with it, I should not get annoyed Hmm

After I have thrown the pc through the window, I shall be throwing HIM!!!!!!!!

Just get one - can't you credit card it? Tax back on it as it's for business etc - even a £249 cheapo from argos job would be better it seems and it IS essential after all.

Or whats making it run so slow? Can you block ads and keep facebook closed down? These things always make my pc run stupidly slow.

HecateTrivia · 17/05/2012 17:40

And I know. I sound like I'm 5yrs old, stamping my feet and the only thing missing in my op are the words "scream and scream and scream until I'm sick" but I'm a woman on the edge. On the edge I tell you...

OP posts:
HecateTrivia · 17/05/2012 17:47

God knows what's wrong with it, lubey. I did have the money to take it to a repair chap, but apparently we need our second printer repaired now Hmm so he went and took that bugger in Angry

Apparently, I am impatient and just need to calm down.

Oh yes. "calm down" "Calm down dear" in fact.

It is ok to have to wait for 10 minutes while the computer decides if it's going to cooperate.

It'll get sorted, it's just going to take a week or so now because he decided to get this printer fixed. I just don't understand his priorities sometimes. ok, this printer is a good one and far cheaper to run, but really? before the pc?

In the meantime, I can't work and - even worse - I can barely MN! Shock

WaitingForMe · 17/05/2012 17:58

Surely it's something worth getting into debt over? My business would fail if I didn't have a properly working computer.

HecateTrivia · 17/05/2012 18:08

yes, you're right. Mine too. I shall probably have to go cap in hand to the bank Grin or something.

I am just frustrated that he nabbed my computer repair fund to fix the pigging printer.

Can't you knock your cup of tea over it Grin

Seabright · 17/05/2012 21:36

Like the tea idea. Do you have insurance on the current PC?

MaisyMooCow · 17/05/2012 21:44

I had similar problems with my work computer, it practically gave me a nervous breakdown. Technology is supposed to help, not tip you over the edge!

GretaGip · 17/05/2012 21:45

Fort you wasn't meant to MNing anyway while you were ISOing your arse all over the joint?

HUh?

HUh?

Huh?

Hectate, je suis depodnent.

ilovesooty · 17/05/2012 22:13

I have similar problems with my work computer too. I feel your pain.

HecateTrivia · 18/05/2012 06:49

Yes. I will be found one day, under the desk, wide eyed and chewing on the cables.

ooooh, I DO have insurance.

hmmm, iiiiiinteresting...

Greta - Grin I completed the ISOs. Got all 4. We are now an ISO certified company. I got commended on the quality of my work and everyfink. [proud]. It's amazing what I got done when I banned myself from MN for a couple of weeks!

It's the external audit that's coming up (we have 4 a year - one for each standard) and that's what I have to make sure we're prepared for.

I may get under the desk anyway Grin

Who declared you cannot afford it? Your DH? (I ask because he says the printer can be).

flatpackhamster · 18/05/2012 06:56

PM me with the computer make and model. I might be able to suggest some cheap upgrades that will ease your pain.

HecateTrivia · 18/05/2012 07:00

Oh yes. It's not just that the printer can be. It's that HE TOOK MY SECRET COMPUTER REPAIR FUND TO DO IT Grin

He has a small, tiny, teeny weeny point. Maybe. The current printer gets through ink cartridges like nobody's business. They cost £40 a pop. The currently broken one is a toner one. Now, the toner costs £70 but lasts years! So it is actually costing a lot to delay fixing the printer, and what we save on cartridges will repay the printer repair.

But that's not the point. The point is, erm, I want to get my own way.

(do I get honesty points? Grin )

Are you sure it's the computer and not your broadband connection? Just asking as you're talking about websites, but you may be doing the amendments off line.

Also check if your AV is doing a scan, my laptop can be become unusable when that is going on.

YANBU though there is nothing more frustrating than a slow computer.

HecateTrivia · 18/05/2012 07:06

and you said, clearly, pm, didn't you? Blush sorry, not awake yet.

OP posts:
HecateTrivia · 18/05/2012 07:10

I have been blaming the connection, but it keeps freezing and going slow when I am typing up in word and trying to open folders on the pc and doing photo editing and all that. White screen of doom.

My broadband says speed 54.0Mbps, signal strength 'excellent'.

I'm not a techie type, but 54 isn't terribly slow, is it? 5 minutes to open a page slow?

I have kaspersky and scan regularly, it does get a lot slower when I'm doing that, but it's slow anyway.

It's just really frustrating. I'm not the most patient person in the world, I'll admit, but this is ridiculous.

Ah well, just whinging Grin it'll get sorted.

OP posts:
Iggly · 18/05/2012 07:39

Can you hire a pc?

flatpackhamster · 18/05/2012 07:42

It's not your broadband speed, it's the PC. 95% sure it's a RAM shortage.

NoobytheWaspSlayer · 18/05/2012 08:26

Have you tried cleaning up unused files etc to make it faster. This worked on an old laptop we had. There are a few things you can try.

www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx

HecateTrivia · 18/05/2012 09:05

Thanks. Will give these things a try. I have gone into the office so I can MN work properly

OP posts:
voiceofnoreason · 18/05/2012 09:30

HecateTrivia - it must be the machine. 54Mbps is blisteringly fast.

It could be
a) junk on hard drive
b) fragmented hard drive
c) low memory

I would download a piece of software called Crap Cleaner - does what is says on the tin! Then defrag the hard drive and then look about upgrading the Ram. They are not called packard-hell for nothing.

If the machine is still slow - you may have a nasty malware infection. What windows version are you working on?

(smugly typed on a 4 year old Mac - that is still lightning fast)

Iggly · 18/05/2012 09:31

Our PC says 54Mbps but I think it lies it's Virgin

Our PC is not slow - its the Internet in our case. I know it's not slow, I built it myself.

GretaGip · 18/05/2012 09:36

Well done on your 4 ISOs blahdiblahdiblah.

Bet you're regretting it now Hectart that you've got to be properly inspected twixe a year?

Areya?
