Went to a kiddies birthday party with 7 week old DS and was sat with someone's MIL who is a strain at the best of times..

Comments included
'Your baby's feet are too cold you know'
'That won't keep the sun out of his eyes..why didn't you bring a better hat?'
'He's spit up quite a lot hasn't he? You should probably feed him less'

But what really got my back up was her asking me loudly infront of a room full of people I don't know, 'is the father involved?'
I am a single mum, but I am a 21 year old woman not some teenager that got knocked up. I see this woman once a year if I'm unlucky so AIBU to think it was totally inappropriate and rude for her to ask me that in that way?! Grrr!

(I answered a quick yes and carried on my conversation fwiw)

Just be thankful this woman isn't your MIL.

I strongly suspect this well meaning busy body would have said exactly the same things to you if you had been 35 and married.

MummySunshine · 15/05/2012 18:59

Not embarrassed but felt it was an inappropriate topic to discuss over polite company? Like a load of strangers at a childs birthday party?

I'm an old lady I'm allowed to have a cats bun face ;D

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 15/05/2012 19:01

YANBU to be pissed off. It all sounds like sly digs to me.

Portofino · 15/05/2012 19:02

Is it now inappropriate to be a single parent in polite company?

IAmBooyhoo · 15/05/2012 19:06

are you just a knocked up 21 year old then? Hmm

(btw you're still a young mum)

MummySunshine · 15/05/2012 19:10

When I said 'my situation' I didn't mean the fact I'm a single parent, I meant whether the dad is around or not.

hands op one of these

IAmBooyhoo · 15/05/2012 19:12

amongst polite company. not over. unless the two of you were shouting across a room of people talking?

and single parenting is hardly friday night bumsex. what's impolite about discussing it? you sound like you have a chip on your shoulder about your situation tbh.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 15/05/2012 19:14

People frequently ask me if the fathers are involved.
Cheeky feckers
I don't think it's a terrible heinous thing to have different fathers and be a single mum nor nuffin but I do wonder why they feel the need to ask me.
Anyone have any ideas?

MummySunshine · 15/05/2012 19:16

LOL thankyou unchartered..

abandons ship

I'm with Debeez! I was a knocked up teenager too. Do I deserve to be spoken to in a condescending manner?!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 15/05/2012 19:21

Of course you don't dear. Stop worrying your pretty little head ;)

Debeez · 15/05/2012 19:24

:o MrsDeVere

Teaandcakeplease · 15/05/2012 19:27

"but I do wonder why they feel the need to ask me"
I just ask them, as I said down thread, I say "why do you ask?" Usually stops the questions Grin

ScarlettAlexandra · 15/05/2012 20:00

silly question. why does knocked up mean pregnant, never understood that myself.

plus there are many advantages of being a teen mom. as being an older one too.

AfternoonDelight · 15/05/2012 20:24

You can't win when you're a "young mum" not that you're all not young of course

I was 20 when I was pregnant with DS. DP often got asked if he was the father. Actually, come to think of it, I got the same comments with DD 4 years later.

Seems us young mums can't keep hold of a man maybe we will get wise with age or something

AngiBolen · 15/05/2012 20:39

Personally I don't like the term "fell pregnant".

You fall ill. Falling isn't good.

FeakAndWeeble · 15/05/2012 20:42

'Up the duff' is my worst. What does it even mean?! It's horrible!

DaPrincessBride · 15/05/2012 20:43

Ah, I used to get comments like that when DD was tiny. It was very annoying so YANBU.

NunOnTheRun · 15/05/2012 20:53

YANBU to have fantasised about administering a good old slap [am quite sure you came here to vent rather than the alternative Grin ] This 'lady' presumed that a young[er] person would just sit there and take everything she cared to dish out. Angry

Triggles · 15/05/2012 20:55

Easy answer. Loud trill of laughter (to draw everyone's attention to you both) and then very clearly say whilst smiling "why on EARTH would you think that was any of your business?" Grin

it generally is pretty effective.
