To think this woman should have to pay for her window to be replaced?

So my mil has a neighbour who lives in a council house. (nb// this is not a HA bashing thread, I also live in a council estate)

She got absolutely blind drunk last night and was screaming outside her door having lost her keys on her night out at 4am.

Cue her going into next doors garden, taking a garden ornament and smashing the newly installed double glazing the council had put in to get in her living room

(nb I don't know how she actually did it but both panes were broken today and she had put masking tape over it in an x shape.)

She has said to another neighbour (in front of my extremely nosey 15 yo relative) that she is going to say she doesn't k ow what happened to the window and thinks kids might have done it during the night and ring the police and get a crime reference no so the council will get her (more!) new double glazing!

(I don't even know if that's how it actually works, just going off overheard conversations)

AIBU to think that's so wrong? I'll admit here to being slightly jealous as I hate my windows ATM lol

No, YANBU to expect her to pay for her own window. Unfortunately I doubt it will happen. No doubt she will get it paid for as she said. Seems to be the way things work now Sad

Reckon she should be careful reporting it to the Police. What if a witness comes forward who saw her do it?

Not sure what the implications are re vandalising your own property but I agree that she should cover the costs of replacing the double glazing herself.

p.s. I am slightly jealouse of DMIL's new kitchen which was recently put in by the council. It's lovely.

scarletforya · 13/05/2012 19:00

Did she really do that? Shock Mad scary woman, she should definitely pay herself. She sounds scary though OP.

Kayano · 13/05/2012 19:03

She does seem a bit rough but she has never spoken to mil personally since she moved in.

Mil witnessed it having looked out the window. She was foaming because it was her first child free night in ages and the woman woke her up!

I actually think a few people saw it due to the shouting and the neighbour whose ornament she took is livid because that is now broken too.

Also it tends to be a case of 'don't grass' in that estate. A grandad went after a kid with a brick once Confused

Hopefully someone will report it and she wont get away with it - totally takes the piss doesn't it.

It's hard isn't it when you are struggling and you see all the council houses getting lovely new kitchens/bathrooms/windows (whatever is on the current schedule!)... it would be nice if they'd just do the whole street Wink

DPrince · 13/05/2012 19:08

Is she going to pay for the ornament to be replaced. What if that person reports it to the police?

claudedebussy · 13/05/2012 19:11

i can't afford to pay tax so that she gets to break windows for free. i can't afford massive nights out, getting so drunk i lose my keys, pitch up at 4 am and break windows and garden gnomes. why the fuck should she?

i really do hope that someone comes forward as a witness, because that stinks.

gamerwidow · 13/05/2012 19:19

Yes she should pay for it herself and if the council suspect she damaged it herself then that's exactly what she'll be doing.

The ornament lady might complain she was soooo not impressed. I don't live there and didn't see so can't really report and mil won't as they had problems with their last neighbours. They bought their house so couldn't afford if their windows got put in.

Urgh. Don't really know what will happen. I hope she is cold in her house tonight though

Kayano · 13/05/2012 20:02

She refused to speak or open the door to ornament lady

too right she should pay for it. she has a real bloody cheek to even think about telling them it was someone else, never mind that she told teh neighbours she was going to lie! Shock how on earth could she stand there telling a neighbour that and not blush with embarrassment?

IAmBooyhoo · 13/05/2012 20:16

i reckon ornament lady might report her to the council if she isn't going to replace the ornament.

youarekidding · 13/05/2012 20:22

I live in a HA property - and I think she should pay!

I only call the HA for things that are wear and tear, broken due to old age etc. Most things I sort myself if I can or I broke them.

My shower broke a year ago - Its a gifted item (because I have a bath) and I can't afford to replace it so use the ones that attach to the taps!

Kayano · 13/05/2012 21:00

iamboo because i suspect the other neighbour gave her the idea!

She should pay for it whether or not someone else did it.

Even if it had been someone else, why should the council pay for it? They wouldn't pay for my broken window if someone else had done it, that's what insurance is for. Renters should have insurance too.

rhondajean · 13/05/2012 21:32

Tenants can't get buildings insurance, which is what covers windows. The ha or council will have though.

Without a crime reference number she will be recharged for the cost of replacing the window. If she does report to the police, she's playing a dangerous game if she gets caught. If not, as with any other tenant, the repair will be carried out after the landlord checks the crime with the police (ie to make sure she hasn't made it up or they don know her or another resident in the property carried out the attack).

It is the responsibility of the landlord to assure the property is in good repair. Social housing originally came about in response to slum landlords and people living in terrible conditions which made them ill. For that reason I think it is rig that they carry out repairs.

However this woman is a first class muppet and a cheat and I hoe she gets caught, her behaviour is diverting resources and at the end of the day results in higher rents all round.
