to think Loch Fyne has turned into a total cheeky rip-off and ask if you've been lately?

I used to go as a treat and their sharing platters were really nice. I went today, they have a new menu, and they have a 'best of Loch Fyne' platter for 22 quid to share as a starter, or one as a main. So quite a pricey dish, same as their lobster main. We were told what was in it - langoustines, oysters, mussles, clams, 'and lots of other shellfish'. Lovely.

We got it and it was mussles (much less in total than the guy on the next table had as a main dish of moules marinieres), two oysters, four small langoustines. That was it. So we had an oyster each, a couple of langoustines and .... mussles. Which are cheap as seafood goes.

My main course was scallops. I don't expect to get lots of scallops, but it was 16 quid and there were four of them, minus the corals. For a main course.

We did say (nicely) that the sharing platter didn't actually have what they said on it, and were told 'chef has been warned by upstairs not to put more than three clams on'. We pointed out there had been none. They said sorry but didn't take anything off the bill.

I'm a bit gutted TBH. We paid just over 60 quid for two courses each, no wine. That's a lot of money for us.

AIBU? Has anyone else been recently and did it seem like a rip-off?

The actual Loch Fyne is stunning

ifeellove · 11/05/2012 21:30

Had an amazing meal at the original LF restaurant on Loch Fyne and have been to the Edinburgh one a few times. I like it - kids eat free most of the time and it's the right mix of family friendly and nice.

I wouldn't say it was cheap and if I fancied a seafood platter there are places I'd rather go

pinkappleby · 11/05/2012 21:32

We stopped going there a number of years ago when we had a huge bill for not a lot of a meal. We had shortly before had a special occasion meal at a really nice posh restaurant - 3 courses plus wine and it cost the same as dinner and a soft drink at Loch Fyne.

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 21:39

mrscumberbatch Not the scottish series, no... just to stay with a very dear friend who lives on the shore of Loch Fyne.

mrscumberbatch · 11/05/2012 21:40

I would literally choke a person to live there. It's so beautiful. Lucky devils!

PoppyWearer · 11/05/2012 21:54

Shame! We used to live near one and went loads.

OooohShiny · 11/05/2012 21:59

It is indeed beautiful mrscumberbatch but then I'm biased being a west coast girl...I'm lucky enough to live within driving distance

ethelb · 11/05/2012 22:00

I used to be a waitress there. They buy the stuff from tesco when they run out.

aquashiv · 11/05/2012 22:01

I last went months ago and it was medicore and the service lack lustre. Then again I think that of an awful lot of places I really feel the level of service in this country is just awful. Perhaps I am getting old and waiters no longer can be arsed with the sour faced older lady taht I am becoming

MrsHarryPearce · 11/05/2012 22:02

can't beat a high street curry. Stuffed from tail to beak for under £30 for two. Plus you get a nice hot flannel and a free after eight!

frankie4 · 11/05/2012 22:04

I went recently and it was lovely. Had really nice pan fried fish with great chips.

mrscumberbatch · 11/05/2012 22:04

I'm a city girl (glasgow!) ooohshiny but there's something about there that makes me want to fling in the towel and live in a little but and ben in tignabruich!

Did you hear they're building an eco-friendly heated outdoor swimming pool at Portavadie??!?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/05/2012 22:05

Really, ethel?! No wonder they've got problems with their budgeting then! Grin

mrsharry - don't say that! We have a lovely curry place near us and I could have gone there! Sad

I think next time, it will be domestic lobster-murder.

Oooh, I hadn't heard about that ...sounds fab!! I love an outdoor swimming pool, there's nothing to beat swimming in a warm pool whilst its pissing down with rain Grin

on the food side have you tried the seafood at the two fat ladies @the buttery...tends to be more for a special treat I go there but their seafood is fab

mrscumberbatch · 11/05/2012 22:14

There's a whole leisure complex getting built seemingly. We were over that way for a cycle and so I had to pop in for a massage. (It's only fair!)

The buttery is fab. They've had some great groupons recently as well which has been a bargain.

Next time you're in Glasgow try and get a table at Crabshakk. It's very small and a bit of a hidden gem but still nigh on impossible to get a table for unless you book well in advance.

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 23:11

Right... I'm bring my cossie to Scotland for my holiday then. I'll be in Lochgilphead from 26th. If you see tall mad Yorkshire woman gorging on mussels, that'll me.

mrscumberbatch · 11/05/2012 23:12

It's been alternatively so cold that you have to put the heating on and so hot you get sunburn- so don't think you'll get away with packing lightly!!

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 23:23

oh blimey.... and I'm travelling in tiny classic sports car so limited wardrobe options

hopkinette · 11/05/2012 23:26

I work at Loch Fyne. Literally the worst place I have ever worked.

mrscumberbatch · 11/05/2012 23:30

I shouldn't laugh but i'm going to! Hopefully the weather will have turned by the time you get here but even the weather reports have been woefully off.

If it all goes quite wrong and you have the wrong outfit there's a cracking shop at the marina in portavadie for joules sweaters etc!

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 23:30

hopkinette What, the actually one on the shore of Loch Fyne? Shall I say hello to you when I'm there in a couple of weeks? How shall we know each other?

hopkinette · 11/05/2012 23:33

Sadly no, not the real one! Although that restaurant was the original one, it's no longer part of the chain, it's an independent entity (and apparently very good!). I work for the chain, which is owned by Greene King.

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 23:34

MrsC I shall wave at you as I pass Glasgow. Feck to the weather as I shall be packing kaguoules etc anyway.

thenightsky · 11/05/2012 23:37

the car I am coming in is the silver one, 2nd pic on my profile. I expect flashing from scottish mumsnetters Grin
