to hate self checkouts in shops?

Apart from the fact that I hate using them, isn't this a ploy by the shop to cut staff? Why should I support that during a recession? Or is it a desparate attempt to stay in business during a recession, which I should support? Confusing ...

Any shop assistants with an opinion?

There is an unexpected post in your thread please remove it from the bagging area =)

Hopandaskip · 11/05/2012 15:40

yeah hate them and also have children who bug me about them.

sixlostmonkeys · 11/05/2012 15:45

My Ms. SatNav's sister works on these :)
She's as daft as her sister though and easily gets alarmed "unexpected item in the bagging area!!!!" Yeah, that'll be a BAG dear. At least she doesn't try to send me across farm-yards.

JosephineCD · 11/05/2012 15:47

Supermarkets cost people's jobs. Would you like to have to traipse round local greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, bakers etc? And have to do it on foot, because cars cost jobs as well?

SoldeInvierno · 11/05/2012 15:50

I love them. At least I can scan shopping at my own pace, rather than packing stuff up at the speed of lightning just because some cashier has decided quicker is better. I never loose any items when I self-scan, where as last time I used the cashier I managed to loose a £7 bottle of shampoo. It put me off from using them again for a long time.

CremeEggThief · 11/05/2012 15:57

YANBU. Every time I've tried to use them, something's gone wrong and I've had to ask for help, which I hate doing anyway, so I say thanks in a very begrudging way, so it's much easier not to use them at all!

ilovesooty · 11/05/2012 19:00

I absolutely hate them and only use them if a member of staff insists on guiding me over and putting the shopping through for me, which rather defeats the object.

JennyPiccolo · 11/05/2012 19:10

Laughing@the poster with lemons in asda, this happened to me. Tried to buy two lemons and the machine went daft. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF LEMONS EXCEEDED or some nonsense. Then the woman was all annoyed about it, 'You can buy ONE lemon or more than two!' I got a fit of the giggles at this point. Was like some sort of crap LSD flashback.

hiddenhome · 11/05/2012 19:11

I end up by shouting and swearing at them because they don't work properly or start telling me all kinds of shit that I don't want to hear Hmm

georgesmummy11 · 11/05/2012 19:16

I work in a supermarket and I'm a checkout supervisor just felt like I had to comment about them being there to cut staff.
They don't we have 18 tills and 10 self checkouts if they weren't there we would have 10 extra checkouts so the colleagues who run self scan wouldn't have a job.
Also they have daily and weekly targets too meet if they don't meet them we would have to cut there hours. So if you don't use them when you have a couple of items you are actually doing them out of work not saving jobs.

hatingtoday · 11/05/2012 19:51

I hate them because I don't like doing someone else's job for free.

In our tescos, my item wouldn't go through because the code was scuffed. The assistant comes over and says "yeah, you need to go and find another one from the shelf and put the bar code through."

No I fucking don't. I don't actually work here!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 11/05/2012 20:09

I hate hate hate them. If I wanted to be a checkout operator I would be.

TheCrackFox · 11/05/2012 20:19

I just refuse to use them.

WeetabixIsNotAPlural · 11/05/2012 20:21

They are genuinely much quicker and DD enjoys them. Wish all the machines had different voices though so you could tell whether your machine or the next door one is speaking to you.

WMDinthekitchen · 11/05/2012 20:23

I resent being referred to as the, 'unidentified object in the bagging area.' YANNNBU

NaughtyElephantsSquirtWater · 11/05/2012 20:26

When shopping I usually balance heavy items in the hood bit of the buggy as can't carry heavy basket. SO many times I have waltzed out the shop having forgotten that they are there only to realise half way down the road. Blush

So that's obviously one way of not scanning items.

I like them Grin

YANBU. One step away from scab labour as far as I'm concerned.
