to think that the keeping of dogs for domestic purposes should be banned.

That?s it really. I am sick to death of having to watch my feet to make sure I don?t accidentally tread in dog muck left to steam by some selfish, lazy dog owner. I resent not being able to take 2yo DS to the park directly opposite my house because it?s used as a dog exercise ground and you can?t play toddler football without the ball and toddler falling into said dog muck. I hate that every time we go to the slightly nicer park there?s at least one dog without a lead who decides to come and sniff DS and that while he backs away the owner stands there laughing that ?he?s only being friendly?. I loathe and detest the particularly ?friendly? dogs who lick DS while I drag him away, probably just after eating another dog?s poo or a dead rat or some other disgusting thing they just found. I have personally seen the scars left on a young child by a ?friendly? dog turning savage and ripping the toddler?s cheek off. The problem of people getting bored of their dogs and dumping them in rescue centres is sickening. The stories of dogs being bred to fight, being neglected, being bred for ?beauty? despite the ?beautiful? characteristics causing the animals pain and suffering are beyond belief.

IMO domestic dog owners as a general class have proved that they are irresponsible and selfish. Fear of treading in dog poo on a pavement or in a park is common to everyone and I am so, so sick of people blaming it on a tiny minority. Domestic dog owners can?t be trusted to be responsible so they shouldn?t have them, end of. People should only be allowed to keep dogs for working purposes ? guide dogs, sniffer dogs, police dogs, sheep dogs etc. - if they are licensed.

How ridiculous. Surely it is the owners at fault rather than the dogs with leaving poo.

Feel sorry for your son if he is being snatched away from friendly dogs :(

Woof Woof

MrsBethel · 11/05/2012 17:30

fuckarama - the sandpit is covered when not in use, and my kids wash their hands after gardening.

I'd be pretty pissed off if one of them stepped in cat shit or fox shit and got it on their clothes, hands, and trod it all round the house and/or car before I noticed. But thankfully it's never happened.

It's not that foxes or cats are particularly considerate. It's just that their fouling is scattered far and wide - they don't specifially head down to the local park for a shit. That's exactly what irresponsible dog owners do.

MrsBethel · 11/05/2012 17:31

Okay, here's an idea that could drastically reduce the scale of the dog mess problem.

Two ingredients:

  1. A £100 reward for anyone providing video evidence of a dog fouling offence. Full anonymity guaranteed. Suddenly kids with smartphones would be the eyes and ears of society.

  2. The perpetrator pays the 'finders fee' plus something to cover the costs incurred by the police and courts - £2000 in total, say? This could be via deduction from their benefits if necessary.

Anyone against this proposal?

Mrsjay · 11/05/2012 17:33

you are obviously U and speak to your council about dog shit and watch your feet , id love to know where all this dog poo is there is none round where i live , maybe ban the offenders from keeping dogs but to ban dogs as pets Hmm

Mrsjay · 11/05/2012 17:34

mrsbethel that is genuis

SeaHouses · 11/05/2012 17:36

I don't see why it should be applied to only dog poo. It could be applied to all law breaking.

AllYoursBabooshka · 11/05/2012 17:36

Oh it's just a bit of poo, Not toxic waste.

Shit happens.

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:36

Bingo

Benefits.

Full house.

I win.

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:37

Well, I see a bigger problem with cats fouling indiscriminately anywhere and no cat owner being made to lift cat shit.

I lift my dog's poo. Cat owners should be made to do the same.

NowThenWreck · 11/05/2012 17:41

I have been thinking about the dog poo problem a lot lately (I know how you feel OP-it is the bane of my life, that and "Oh he's just being friendly" dogs jumping up at my terrified son).

Here is what should happen:

A TV campaign shaming dog owners into picking up the poop.

The Drink driving campaign was so successful, that having a drink and then driving became totally socially unacceptable.
They used images on normal happy fun times, and then interspersed with scenes of kids being hideously crippled- and it worked!
Now , if you try and drive pissed you are a total pariah, so people generally don't.

So, a national campaign highlighting the dangers to children of dog poo (going blind etc) not to mention the sheer disgustingness of the problem is what should be done.

People only change their behaviour when they face complete disapproval from their peers-fact.

AllYoursBabooshka · 11/05/2012 17:41

Can you imagine how that would work?

Perhaps a colourant could be added to your cats food so you know exactly which poo is yours to clean?

Oh and a big shovel.

NowThenWreck · 11/05/2012 17:44

Also, this thread has shown that dog owners are incapable of being rational about anything negative to do with dogs.

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:45

But why is it OK for one domestic animal to range free and shit where it likes?

And yet dog owners (even the responsible ones) are always getting it in the neck for dog fouling?

Cats have toxo just the same as dogs. So the risk from next doors cat is much higher than the risk from my dog because I clean up after my dog.

Cat owners don't.

(And I'm not anti-cats I like cats I just hate the attitude towards dogs on here)

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:47

As a responsible dog owner, I have done everything possible.

How many cat owners have 3rd party insurance in case their cat damages a neighbour's property?

How many cat owners have their cats neutered and chipped? And in my case, licensed with a tag on the collar? Oh and my mobile number on a separate tag.

AllYoursBabooshka · 11/05/2012 17:49

Yy NowThen, Picture the advert.

An evil looking man wearing a cape is walking his overly large Doberman through a dark street, He starts laughing manically as the dog begins to shit beside a post box when suddenly a SWAT team descend on him and his evil pooch shouting "FREEZE". It ends with him and his dog looking glum through the bars of the police van while little children run after it cheering.

That'll work.

TheUnMember · 11/05/2012 17:52

My cats are neutered and chipped. They don't have collars as that's not safe.

squoosh · 11/05/2012 17:53

Yes where are all the whiny, petulant threads about the evils of cats?

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:54

Are they house cats or do you let them out to shit where they please?

My poor ickle PFB could be blinded by diseases in your cat's shit you know.

TheUnMember · 11/05/2012 17:55

Only if you poor ickle PFB is playing in the skip on my drive or running feral in forest behind my house. :o

fuckarama · 11/05/2012 17:57
Grin

I'm not trying to pick on you, honestly, I just wanted to make the point that people own cats, which also carry disease and shit all over the place, and I dislike cat shit. A Lot.

But I still have to clean it out of my flower beds and we stopped having a sandpit because of next door's moggie

PandaWatch · 11/05/2012 17:58

At least dogs don't sit on sleeping babies and suffocate them like cats do...

Grin
Mrsjay · 11/05/2012 17:58

ive an idea maybe somebody could set up shitwatch , sit in a hedge with a loudhailer and shout OIY PICK THAT SHIT UP !! [griin]
