to fucking hate working fucking nights?

DameHermione · 10/05/2012 17:00

they fuck me up physically. I get zits, wind and the runs.

I cannot sleep during the day so get more and more fucking tired.

DD also hates me working nights. Life with her is difficult at the best of times and anything that makes it worse is best avoided.

I fucking fucking hate nights.

yanbu
I used to work nights. And it is bad for your health.

YANBU. Worked nights for years. Hated them, but fitted in with childcare etc. They take years off your life, damage your health and stuff your social life up.

Sorry to hear that dameSad
What do you do?
FWIW I worked nights years ago pre-dc and hated them as it was always on my mind-I hated getting the tube into London when everryone was looking forward to going home for a glass of wineAngry

i have to do 2 weeks of nights every 8. i truly fucking hate them.

I can cope with 2 in 8, where I am it is 3-4 in 8. What's worse is one week is 4 nights the next 3. I'm ok with 3 but 4 is a killer

DameHermione · 10/05/2012 17:31

3 is more barable than 4.

due to some fuckup with the rostering and request system I am doing 4.

then a couple of days off, then a few more.

I snack & graze, coffee but none after 6am or im up weeing.

Also started to go to bed an hour later, so shoved some washing in and ran the hoover over then went to bed. Slept slightly longer. Well, got up at 1-2pm rather than the 12md which is horrendous.

Also, had to face facts, it comes with the job, just sleep/work/sleep/work/sleep/work grump and stomp..then back for more Grin

We did 7 on 6 off at one time as a trial...O.M.F.G almost finished me off!

Our shift pattern has just changed and I've just started doing 12.5 hour dayshifts and night shifts. I am not coping at all well with them, particularly the first night where it is impossible to sleep and have something to eat! It takes me ages to get back to days then I'm back on night shifts again. I never get enough to eat, enough to sleep and I get constipated!
I hate them too. Lots of sympathy.

YAsoooooooooNBU. Evil things, night shifts. Should be law that no one can get ill, have babies or set their houses alight at night IMHO. Grazing, rather than big meals seems to help the windy, sickly feeling. I hate the 5am shivers.

me too, Grumpy - doesn't matter what the actual temperature is, it's always frigging freezing at 5 am on nights.

I always feel dreadful between 4am and 7am. I can't eat either and then feel sick at 6 am. I did two backshifts then three nights with a heavy cold two weeks ago and am only just starting to feel better.

I have four nights to look forward to over the June bank holiday as I work for the OOH service. I'd like to thank the Queen for the extra night shift.

VictoraWould - we're just about to change to 12.5 night and day shifts according to the gossip. I shall not be happy if its true. I worry I will struggle to remain safe never mind cheerleedingly supportively happy for labouring women.

VivaLeBeaver · 10/05/2012 18:10

I take amytriptelene and stong anti histamines to help me sleep during the day. Then red bull to keep me awake at night. And we never get our break as we're so busy/short staffed. The break that is an unpaid break, which we're apparantly not allowed to claim overtime for on our timesheets.

featherbag · 10/05/2012 18:11

We do nights every 4th month, it's 3 one week then 4 the next, the real killer is when you're down to do the last 3 nights of a week then the first 4 nights of the next, I've done that once and I honestly don't think I could ever do it again, was over Christmas too :(

Report
MaryPorter · 10/05/2012 18:12

My sympathies OP.

I did them 4 nights a week for a few years (social care). This was pre-dc though, I don't think I would hack it now. Mind you I've averaged about 5 hours sleep a night for the past 7 years since pregnant with dc1.

When I did nights I slept 8am-8pm Blush

Massive sympathy - I do nights in a care home. It's so so draining. I swear it has aged me 10 years doing it.

we do long days 0730-20-30 and nights are 2000-0800. I am ok with this but am bit of a clock watcher at end of shift (unless - as per usual we are in crash section!)

I can sympathise! I do one night shift a week and one day so am constantly confused as to what time of day it is! I only have child care when i'm at work so have no sleep from 7am till 7pm the next day when DS goes to bed!

As much as I hate nights they do fit in well with childcare! Used to hate doing 3 or 4 though, so unsociable!

Ah nights, I did 2 years, lived on a pint of skimmed milk, 1 litre of orange juice and rollups on shifts and pasta, tuna and tinned tomatos off shifts, couldn't face anything else.

Did wonders for my weight.

This was in a factory though, on top of everything else you had to put up with a radio channel that played Meat Loaf's "Two out of three ain't bad" and the Carpenters' "Every sha na na na na and every woo woo, woo woo still shines" and "We've only just begun" at least twice every night. It doesn't sound like a big deal but five nights a week for two years and 17 years later I can't hear those songs without getting all Norman Bates.
