AIBU?

to fucking hate working fucking nights?

DameHermione · 10/05/2012 17:00

they fuck me up physically. I get zits, wind and the runs.

I cannot sleep during the day so get more and more fucking tired.

DD also hates me working nights. Life with her is difficult at the best of times and anything that makes it worse is best avoided.

I fucking fucking hate nights.

Did a 6 month job a while ago where we did a week of nights followed by a week of annual leave - no choice about when you took your holiday. The night shifts were usually 13 hours long but at weekends stuff ended up dragging on so they were about 15 hours. I was so tired by the end of the week that I inevitably spent my annual leave with some viral illness feeling dreadful. Rubbish rota.

It's the chopping and changing that makes you feel shit. If you permanently do nights it's ok.

Where I work 2/3rds of staff work earlies and lates. 1/3 work nights. Of the people on nights, some are only doing it for 6 months, and others are doing them permanently cos the hours suit them.

A lot healthier I think, and I wonder why hospitals etc don't do this? I'm sure there's a very good reason but don't know what it is

dont do nights anymore , but have in the past , actually fell asleep on a colleague whilst waiting for everyone to come out of handover , very embarrassing !
Years ago i used to do three on , three off twelve hour nights . Had ds1 who was 2 and no childcare during the day , so basically didnt sleep for three days , i used to hallucinate and the the 15 mile drive home could get a bit scary .

i used to hate working nights :( OH works a 6 days on, 4 days off pattern - his shifts are 2 early, 2 back and 2 nights. he never gets a decent sleep, don't know how he functions at all!

i do 2 nights every 10 days, 10 hour shifts. (if we get off on time)

dont relish them by any stretch. by 3am im usually done in, and have to last until 7am, then a 45 min drive home. I cant do what most do and go back to bed prior to the first one, with kids its hard!

earlies are almost as bad with a 7am start (so up at 5)

on balance i just hate working shifts. you have my sympathies.

I do permanent nights and find it easier than doing early/lates/nights all in the same week.

I used to love nights, but it was a part-time, permanent night shift job, felt more like a hobby, loads of time off, 1/3rd extra pay, younger and slept like a log.

Job evaluation and cut backs now mean rolling shifts, loss of about £1.5k annually, and 50-50 day shifts/late shifts, hate hate hate late shifts too wired for sleep when I get home at 11pm, and then have to be up at 6am for the day shift.- still glad and very relieved to be working though!!

I've just got in from the shift from hell. I finally got a break after 10 hours of running my arse off. Now its time for bed and I have terrible heartburn. And we're supposed to be grateful we got a break at all. Angry

Makes mental note not to have baby at night or need surgery....Grin
Dh does nights every 3 weeks and it makes him poorly too.
He sleeps with a blackout blind and earplugs and usually manages a good few hours like that.

Can I add my thanks to all of you who work these inhuman hours?
We do appreciate you even if we don't always show it at the time if we are scared and worried.

I am on a night shift tonight, start at 5pm and work through till 9am so a 16 hr shift, 13 hrs of it as a lone-worker so no-one to cover a break. i am nhs worker but can't work out how we are allowed to do these crazy hours, although am grateful for the overtime!

calma

It seems crazy for a health organisation, doesn't it. I often think of the irony as I see colleagues downing choc, crisps, coffe, red bull and Maccy D's as they are so tired.

Anyway Someo f us can look forward to still doing nightshift when we are 68 if Cameron has his way.

Shudders at memory of night shifts many years ago.

But the good thing about working Sunday nights was driving home to bed as the rest of the world was having to go to work.

oooh! I did permanent nights when ds1 was 3 and I was studying again.. I did them for a year - ostensibly I coped quite well - but despite eating the same food, but on a night time schedule, and going to the gym as usual etc - I put on 5lbs in weight, and got a stomach ulcer..

I was more or less fine clinically - Apart from forgetting the name of ITU one morning handover - but it was hard. I slept like I was dead during the day for about 2 hours - completely out of it - then owt would wake me up after that, and I found it hard to go back to sleep...

and breaks? (inserts hollow laugh)

And I farted like a mad thing.
And - thanks to those of you who have posted saying how much you appreciate it - it is part of my job - but it's lovely of you x

Last job was lucky to leave after nights by 11, back by 8pm and three hours of travelling...current job a bit better and nearer home, thank goodnes.
I find coffee and 4 am chocolate important.
I quite like the lack of random rubbish bleeps, though.
