AIBU to think that this is such a blatant rip off?

We lost the key to our little fiat last year - vanished into a mysterious puff of smoke. We ransacked house, everything and.... nada.

Luckily, we have a spare, but DH and I agreed it to be a good idea to get another one sorted. We thought, since it's a fairly oldish car, no central locking, no fancy boot opening, just a bog standard key with a fancy plastic fob, that it would be fairly inexpensive. We phoned the dealer today.

£210. For. A. Key.

In utter shock, we rang around a local garage for advice and they put us in touch with a keymaker (is that what they are called?!) - then spoke to him. He needs a 'code', from the dealer, in order to make us a new key. He'll charge us £45.

So, back to the dealer, requested the code (and all it involves is opening up a file and looking, perhaps even writing it on a post-it [note sarcasm]. He wants £55 for the effort of doing so.

Is he 'avin a laugh?!

Hmm... my little Smart Roadster would be at least £250 from Mercedes. Try ebay. I have a friend who paid about £20 in the end for hers. There will be a Fiat indie out there with access to the codes.

We thought we'd lost our key to our Toyota. We have another but to get one more made was going to be £85. £210 is ridiculous. Thankfully we found it... In a bag in the boot...Hmm

Grin

I hadn't thought of eBay to be honest. Will try there too.

SUCH a rip off - even just getting the code, which doesn't involve ANY labour whatsoever. Grrr!

First look on ebay for a new fob. Then browse google for TAN codes for fiat (model name).

if no joy, google 'Fiat (model name) forums. Join said forum and ask around or use their search for 'key TAN'.

Or even 'key re-teach'

thenightsky - you're a huge help. Thanks

A Fiat indie place should be able to 're-teach' or TAN code a new key (obtained from ebay) for anything between £20 and £50 max.
