Was that par for the course during the seventies? Or unreasonable?

OP posts:
Katiekitty · 07/05/2012 22:26

The new Lurpack Lightest is rank. Oily mush that slides off the bread.

Am back on normal Lurpack butter thank goodness.

Anyone remember the adverts with Douglas the horn player - was that Lurpack?

Also remember Gold being bright yellow, wasn't Gold the one with the ad showing pics of cows carved into the top?

ratspeaker · 07/05/2012 22:26

In the 70s there was an ad campaign, basically an early vox pop style. Think it was Leslie Crowther who would be in a supermarket asking shoppers if they could taste the difference between stork and butter.

Pontouf · 07/05/2012 22:26

Er...what exactly is Stork? Is it just marg? We always just had flora I think (80s child).

ratspeaker · 07/05/2012 22:27

We usually had Anchor butter sent over by a relative in New Zealand

Katiekitty · 07/05/2012 22:28

I remember Echo Silk - came in a brown and white wrapper.

Am also getting a distant memory of some sort of Betsy Clarke cutesy/Holly Hobbie type advert for it. Ah memories!

LeBOF · 07/05/2012 22:31

I didn't realise anybody had stopped serving bread and butter (or approximation thereof) with their meals.

Sparklingbrook · 07/05/2012 22:33

We used to have a mug of tea with our dinner every night. I have no idea why.

Olympia2012 · 07/05/2012 22:34

BOF....it might be in the more modern form if French bread/pitta etc

LeBOF · 07/05/2012 22:35

Us too, Sparkling. This is all starting to sound a bit Road To Wigan Pier now though Grin

Katiekitty · 07/05/2012 22:35

LeBof- I blame Jamie Oliver - it's probably all ciabatta and foccacia these days, with an olive oil/balsamic drizzle.

MN campaign to bring back proper bread and butter I say!

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2012 22:36

WhereYouLeftIt Oh yes I remember all that...the blackouts were fun! Grin

My Dad worked for Ford's at the time and they'd down tools and walk out if someone farted too loudly!

Sparklingbrook · 07/05/2012 22:36

Why would anyone want a mug of tea with their dinner though LeBOF? I must ask DM what she was thinking.

MustControlFistOfDeath · 07/05/2012 22:38

Sparkling DP has a mug of tea with his meal Grin

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/05/2012 22:39

Ooh yes WorraLiberty - my dad worked for Chrysler, which he says was much the same!

Sparklingbrook · 07/05/2012 22:39

I may try it tomorrow Must. Tuna salad and a big steaming mug of tea. Grin

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/05/2012 22:41

I drink tea with my meal - is this unusual? Confused

Katiekitty · 07/05/2012 22:42

Pretty sure I've read in some magazine somewhere that drinking tea with your dinner either impairs or increases vitamin and mineral absorption from one's food.

Wish I could remember which one it was. Will go with 'improves' as generations of MNtters can't be wrong

Sparklingbrook · 07/05/2012 22:42

I'm not sure Where. We always had it growing up but I don't now, and I don't know why. I always have a glass of water or juice with tea now.

WorraLiberty · 07/05/2012 22:43

I can only drink tea with a fry up

And straight after a big mac and fries

BananasInBloomers · 07/05/2012 22:46

Oh I remember the plate of bread and butter in the middle of the table. There were eight of us to feed so I suppose it was to fill us up. Here in Ireland anyone on the dole got butter vouchers, which would pay towards milk and butter. It was only for the butter in foil,so we had a grand collection of butter dishes. I still have the memory of the fresh baked bread and the butter dish in the middle of the table, peeling the skins off potatoes and a big mug of tea. I can't remember any food ever being wasted.

edam · 07/05/2012 22:46

Apparently manufacturers get terribly irate if you call their non-dairy spreads marge. It is a term that is not used in the UK these days. I have no idea why - was there some big margarine scandal that I missed?

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/05/2012 22:47

Ah that rings a bell Katiekitty - tannin impairs iron absorption, vitamin C (e.g. orange juice) aids it. but I'm an addict

Katiekitty · 07/05/2012 22:47

While we're at it - anyone know what happened to the butter mountain?

workshy · 07/05/2012 22:48

ooo a mug of tea with fish and chips

I do remember my mum going mad it the bread went on the table still in th epacket, or the even bigger sin of the milk bottle!

and we weren't even posh!!!!!!!!!

squeakytoy · 07/05/2012 22:49

We usually have bread and butter with main meals. Always have done, unless it is something that you wouldnt have bread with like chinese... if we have pasta then we have garlic bread, and if we have indian we have naan bread.

And always a cup of tea or coffee after the meal too.
