To think Fortnum & Mason should have better trained staff

So I went in there to get a couple of hampers, had to take a quick lunch break, so asked at the counter 'Can I leave my basket here please, I just need to go out for half an hour.' 'Sorry we cannot keep baskets' 'So what do you expect me to do then?' After a quick check, no apology, and she changed her mind and took it off me.

Came back after lunch, I asked a man 'Could you tell me where the English breakfast tea is?' He was French, and therefore rude, and waved at it 'It's over there', rather than walking me over to them.

Then went to get the hampers to put the stuff in. 'I'd like a £40 hamper and a £20 hamper please'. So they brought them out, I put my stuff in, and then they started to ring it up. I had three items of china, from Harrods, to put in them. 'Do you have a receipt for that', she asked. 'I don't know', I said. 'It's just that we sell that one, although we don't sell the other'. 'Oh'.

I was quite put out by this, after my purchases were rung up (£176 if you please), I saw they'd actually given me the £30 hamper. Queried this. Oops, well the £20 wouldn't have fitted anyway.

I then went down to the fish counter to ask about caviar. 'Sorry I don't eat caviar, so I can't tell you about the differences', he said.

You get politer, better trained staff in my local Waitrose.

Not as bad as the touristy parts of Harrods though.

So go to waitrose then and stop showing off

TheSinglePringleWillicopters · 02/05/2012 20:28

dexter I think I will! It's against my humans rights to be expected to do a full shop without a lunch break Grin

fedupofnamechanging · 02/05/2012 20:30

There is nothing wrong with asking a shop to look after something for you for half an hour. Even Mothercare has done that for me in the past.

I agree with the notion that if you are charging shit loads of money for minging caviar goods, then the least you can do is provide good service. If you don't, then people might as well go somewhere cheaper.

Dawndonna · 02/05/2012 20:35

Thought you'd taken to shopping in Morrisons. You were getting discounts because they didn't comprehend your expensive tastes.

Tee2072 · 02/05/2012 20:40

I so cannot relate to this thread. I have no idea why I'm even posting on it.

RatDesPaquerettes · 02/05/2012 20:46

Tee, you can join me on the at 51 seconds...

ah-ha...

JojoLapin · 02/05/2012 20:52

You sound delightful OP and I can only assume you are just as charming in real life. It is therefore not a big surprise that F&M's staff did not bend over backward to assist you. Maybe they could (and perhaps should have) but chose not to. Still, amusing thread...

Poulay · 02/05/2012 20:53

Morrisons hampers come with pork scratchings in.

RatDesPaquerettes · 02/05/2012 20:55

JojoLapin... lovely nickname! One of my favourite characters.

Chubfuddler · 02/05/2012 20:59

Caviar is not minging. It is yum. The op however is a complete loon.

JojoLapin · 02/05/2012 21:00

Thank you... I like yours too! Very appropriate on such a thread!

RatDesPaquerettes · 02/05/2012 21:06

Wink at JojoLapin

DPrince · 02/05/2012 21:11

This op doesn't seem like the same one who specifically shops at morrisons because they under charge. Honestly op you sound very high maintenance, maybe they just wanted you out. I wonder how many people ask them to look after their shopping while they have a break.

dexter73 · 02/05/2012 21:13

My ideal hamper would have:
pork scratchings
chocolate spread with popping candy
Horlicks
2x cans of M&S Pina Colada
drifters
jacobs cream crackers
tinned rice pudding
I might make myself one for a treat!

margoandjerry · 02/05/2012 21:14

He is French, and therefore rude, is funny. We all know what she means. Even French people know what she means.

And yes that is bad service. OP is obviously not doing her weekly shop but buying expensive gifts and it's not very good that people didn't show any interest in offering information when requested.

Not sure about popping out mid-shop but no need for the reverse lah-di-dah attitude Grin

Margoandjerry are you the OP's twin sister by any chance? 'Lah-di-da' (like the expression!) attitude at F&Ms... Really?...

I just read another post about a woman who is cross that her MIL bought her husband a sweater for his birthday... The world has gone mad...

Then again , I am French (therefore rude, smelly, ignorant, etc. but feel free to add whatever suits) so what do I know?...

RatDesPaquerettes · 02/05/2012 21:36

JojoLapin, for you!

quirrelquarrel · 02/05/2012 21:45

Rude like you, mon chère Poulet?

RatDesPaquerettes · 02/05/2012 21:53

Poulay may have chickened out of this thread Smile

QuintessentialShadows · 02/05/2012 21:53

I agree with the op.

But you would be wise to chose Russian caviar. If you want to show off that is.

Personally I prefer the nice and subtly flavored pink cod caviar. You buy it raw, in complete "lungs" from the fishmongers, and cook it yourself. Yum on a sandwich. And in omelet? Divine!

Poulay · 02/05/2012 22:09

The impression that I got (from googling on my phone while in Fortnums) was that the Russian stuff is unavailable due to overfishing.

I think it's rather gauche to refer to anything that hasn't come out of a sturgeon as caviar. Cod roe is fine, but it's not caviar.

OP posts:
QuintessentialShadows · 02/05/2012 22:12

No, it is not caviar, if we are to be pedantic. I could not remember the word roe. After all, caviar and roe, it is all the same: fish eggs, harvested from the fish prior to "laying".

It is like watching a modern version of Keeping Up Appearances.
