to think 50 Shades of Grey is a disaster for everyone involved?

Can't believe there are still people who don't know 50 Shades of Grey is a Twilight fanfic reprinted with the names changed.

I think frankly that everyone involved in bringing it before the public in the guise of a legitimate original work should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves - I don't mean the readers duped by the hype, as everyone is suckered by hype sometimes, and I am definitely not dissing the content for being sexual, but for being unoriginal, unbelievably badly written and misguided about the sexual universe it claims to describe.

It's plagiaristic, endangers the fanfic community (especially if Stephenie Meyer ever wakes up and takes action), and it's utter shite.

And as BDSM goes, it is utterly and criminally irresponsible, both for failing to use the most elementary safety precautions and for dissing BDSM as sadism, which it bloody ISN'T. I'm not in that world myself, but I have friends who are... and I lost a colleague to it a few years ago, to self-strangulation.

My views are admittedly based on the fanfic, which I read a while ago, but I gather that the 'book' is 86% the same as the fanfic, and that most of those changes are name-changes (Bella is Ana, Edward is Christian).

What cheered me up is the emerging parody - 51 Shades... Google for it.

YANBU from the fic community pov but I doubt many mners will care much about that :)

porcamiseria · 01/05/2012 12:12

erm.........................BOVVERED???

ErikNorseman · 01/05/2012 12:15

Grin see? It's kind of a niche concern...

mckenzie · 01/05/2012 12:18

I have no idea what you are talking about Smile

sieglinde · 01/05/2012 12:20

Interesting. Maybe book things are always a bit of a tempest in a teapot. I';m still not very keen on crap plagiarism, but I will take my oddball toys off to a more private sandpit if you'd like Grin

YANBU to think it is a pile of badly written drivel which has been hyped beyond belief but then so was Twilight.

TooEasilyTempted · 01/05/2012 12:22

I'm reading it at the moment and enjoying it for what it is - trashy unputdownable shite Grin

PoohBearsHole · 01/05/2012 12:24

I am reading it purely to see if it gets me juices going. So far I have tosay its barely warming however that maybe because I made the mistake of wasting time watching Silent Witness instead of reading the kindle [sigh]

ClodiaMetelli · 01/05/2012 12:25

Yanbu - the more I hear of it, the less inclined I am to read it. I already know for example that she bites her lip rather a lot while referring to her 'inner goddess' ad nauseum.

The reviews aren't exactly selling it to me iyswim. Nor is the label 'mummy-porn'

May just go straight for the parody...

McPie · 01/05/2012 12:27

I too am enjoying it for its trashyness, its a case of each to their own and all that twaddle! Grin

Tokamak · 01/05/2012 12:27

Can't believe there are still people who don't know 50 Shades of Grey is a Twilight fanfic

Why in the name of god not? It's a bit niche, isn't it? I should imagine 80% of humanity have never even heard of it.

OatcakeCravings · 01/05/2012 12:29

I just bought this from Asda yesterday - I thought it look like trash - which was exactly what I was looking for as I need something to read at the weekend while we're away. Might not bother taking it with me now...

TheCatInTheHairnet · 01/05/2012 12:31

Who cares?! I just read it for the sex. Wink

I did like Ellen DeGenere's summing up...."God, you heterosexuals are weird!" Grin

PoohBearsHole · 01/05/2012 12:31

Oh no its definitely trash!

I have just googled the parody and it is hilarious!

My put on hold of reading the Girl who played with fire might just stop and I shall go back to it. However I did get it for a very small amount on Amazon for my kindle so I guess you live and learn!

upahill · 01/05/2012 12:32

When I read out your title I thought you were on about hair dye for the 'more mature'.

I didn't know that there was a book with that name.

ChaoticismyLife · 01/05/2012 12:32

I first heard about it a few days ago, can't remember where though. Then I found out there's a second book when shopping in Morrisons yesterday. Never having read Twighlight I wouldn't have known and don't see why I would know.

valiumredhead · 01/05/2012 12:33

It's utter shite - I only managed half the kindle sample I downloaded.

massistar · 01/05/2012 12:43

The parody, on the other hand, is utter genius!

Bumblefeck · 01/05/2012 13:08

How can anybody that likes the Twilight books moan about something else being badly written is beyond me

I bought Fifty Shades cos it was only £3, looked trashy and completely brainless, which I was in the mood for. It's not a good book but it kept me amused for a day.

It's also about as sexy as a wet wipe

sieglinde · 01/05/2012 13:12

I'm not a twilight fan either, but 50 Shades makes Meyer look almost competent. I'm more of a fan of fanfic. Grin

NoraHelmer · 01/05/2012 13:14

Not my kind of book, really but I did see it in ASDA at the weekend along with the other two parts of the trilogy, priced at £3 each, or 3 for £10 :o

donnie · 01/05/2012 13:15

at the risk of sounding either too intelligent or too well read - or both - what precisely is 'fanfic'? is it a new literary genre?

seriously - I would like to know.

lolajane2009 · 01/05/2012 13:15

tbh i havent read it as i can get similar books for less money

Katiepoes · 01/05/2012 13:26

I was so disappointed in it - the writing is AWFUL, the sex is boring (pretty impressive to make an S&M novel boring), the main character irritating with her fecking goddess and 'oh my'...to quote Catherine Tate's Nana - 'wot a load of old shite'.

Jilly Cooper's stuff is sexier and a lot more entertaining.

I'm happy to pass it on to anyone who wants it, PM me.

OTheHugeManatee · 01/05/2012 13:27

Yes, yes, it's plagiarised, whatever. But does it give you the fannygallops?
