to want to get my nipples pierced

I have, since a teenager, hankered after pierced nipples. I never had the nerve. DC s and BF scuppered any thoughts along those lines. DH is intrigued rather than enthusiastic. Now I am 37 the yearning is still there. Should I? Is this an early mid life crisis that I'll get over? I don't have other piercings apart from ear lobes.

The look plus the fact I was a little hooked on the excitement of getting piercings done, I went through a phase of getting a new piercing every month Grin

fallenangle · 04/05/2012 16:23

I think I should go with my gut feeling. Next step is to find a lovely, skilled and experienced piercer.

how exciting! slightly Envy as am still considering it... do they make ones that can go through metal detectors ok? (I fly about once a year) yes but there's a 5 month wait before being able to remove the origional ones...

fallenangle · 04/05/2012 23:57

I hand 't thought of that, will they have metal detectors at the Olympic venues?

Remembers cracked and sore nipples when bf. Why would anyone put themselves through that sort of pain from choice? What is the point of it?

Empusa · 05/05/2012 00:13

marriedinwhite It doesn't feel anything like sore nipples from breastfeeding

mrsmuddypuddles You can buy acrylic/PTFE body jewellery

AgathaFusty · 05/05/2012 05:16

They don't set of airport scanners/metal detecting thingys, any more than a pair of normal earings would.

MrsMuddyPuddles · 05/05/2012 05:45

Thanks Agatha.
MarriedinWhite, it's to claim one's body for yourself in a private way. At least for me.

gafhyb · 05/05/2012 07:13

YABU

Yuk

(althogh, obviously it's your body etc etc etc)

marriedinwhite · 05/05/2012 09:29

Gosh, I claim mine by using nice bubble bath, painting my toenails and keeping my hair nice. But then I've never had to claim it from anyone really - I've always felt it was entirely mine. I think that's a bit sad MrsMuddyPuddles.

Smellslikeweenspirits · 05/05/2012 09:36

I'd quite like my clitoral hood done but I'm faaaaar too scared and actually a bit prudish about getting out my fanjo for the piercer

Smellslikeweenspirits It's so worth the embarrassment though!

fanjolina · 05/05/2012 14:27

The healing time is putting me off - I've heard it is up to 6 months, an your nipples are pretty much out of action during that time. Can anyone confirm?

I have my clit hood pierced - would highly recommend Grin

Smellslikeweenspirits · 05/05/2012 15:01

Oooo how much did it hurt? I've got a tattoo and had my belly button done about 15 years ago so am obviously well 'ard
But I'm really really scared. But would if I knew it wasn't as bad as having an 11lb baby, which I've recently done

HillyWallaby · 05/05/2012 15:08

God, yes. Oh God. Urrgh. I'm feeling queasy and anxious just at the thought of it. Quite apart from whether you think it is in any way attractive or alluring (and I really don't) I just cannot BEAR to think about how hideous it would be if - no, not if but when you caught them on anything and your nipple ripped.

Shock
HillyWallaby · 05/05/2012 15:11

My son saw an awful incident at a festival once, where a girl had severel piercings down her back and had ribbons sort of laced through them, so they were all joined up. She went in the mosh pit (drunk) and a couple of them got caught on something and ripped out of her back and she went into shock and had to be stretchered away.

Empusa · 05/05/2012 15:34

Smellslikeweenspirits Definitely hurts less than childbirth! I didn't find it painful at all

fallenangle · 05/05/2012 17:47

Those of you with nipple, or other intimate piercings, what do you wear in your piercings? I was thinking gold or SS rings but I've now discovered shields and all sorts which are tipping the balance even more

OP posts:
Empusa · 05/05/2012 17:50

I have/had to wear titanium or SS (allergic to gold), and for nipples I switched between barbells and ball closure rings. I did own shields, but wasn't overly keen on them.

AgathaFusty · 05/05/2012 18:15

I think most decent piercers insist on titanium as it's the metal least likely to cause allergy problems.

Healing time is quite long, but after a week or two just normal cleaning twice a day is fine, and er, action is ok too.

Savlon spray is brilliant, although for the first weeks, whatever the piercer recommends.

starsintheireyes · 05/05/2012 18:26

Go for it but be prepared for it to reject. I had mine done, wouldnt heal so eventually had to take it out as it was pussey and so sore. I had to do it with pliers as the grooves on the ball were deep so it was hard to get the ring off. Bf had exact same experience and sisters bf ripped his nipple off catching the bar on the doorframe!!

oldraver · 05/05/2012 18:38

I went through an American airport a few months after 9/11 and set off the metal detector. I was taken aside and an slightly older gentleman went over me with a hand held detector. It was set off at my waist and they asked to look at my non-existant belt and saw my two belly piercings..... raised eyebrows. He then went up and down my legs and my crotch set it off again, so he wafted it over again and there was a look of horror on his face

So I think it os possible to set them off but think it was more a case of an over sensitive detector caused by excess vigilance

Empusa · 05/05/2012 20:15

oldraver Grin I went to Florida with my cousins and didn't set off the metal detectors at the airport, so when I went to Ireland with my parents a month later I didn't even think about it. Of course that time my VCH set off the metal detectors, and I had to try and whisper that I had a piercing there without my parents hearing Blush

Boris my thoughts exactly about the front window of Claire's, too. Especially as the one nearest to us is a rather posh pedestrian street.

Something I suggested that dd thinks about when we were talking about clitoral piercing ie Claire's. Btw, she is 14, so hopefully a little time yet.
