We moved in last July and the small garden desperately need doing. Rotivate, turf, decking, trellis and a shed. So we tried to get quotes. I say try, no one was interested as the job was too small. Eventually got a quote, agreed, he didn't turn up. Start all over again. This is now the third time. Someone was supposed to start tomo but i haven't heard a peep since we agreed the price and date (3k for 1 weeks work including materials, so he will get about £1200 before tax - i agree it's not the job of the century but still!) on 4 April.

When he came round to give the quote i told him how messed about we'd been for a almost a year and said if he didn't want to do then please tell us. He was adamant, he was desperate for work and was just finishing a couple of other small jobs so would be able to start 30 April.

He emailed quote and said he'd be in contact nearer the time re access and key etc. Since then i haven't heard a bean - nada, nothing, nish!

So i suppose we are going to have to start the palaver all over again.

I appreciate the jobs small and boring but surely about £800 net for a weeks work isn't too bad is it? And why not let me know you've changed your mind? This is the 3rd time this has happened!

I am 22 weeks pregnant and want the garden nice so i can sit out there eating biscuits while on Mat leave!

Thought you were emigrating Spud.

Spuddybean · 29/04/2012 19:46

yes we are - we planned the garden before we knew and are planning to rent the house out so can't really in the awful state it's in. I'm finishing work soon so i want to at least get some use out of it while i'm supposed/pretending to be packing!

Lots of people have done this to me too. It's really frustrating. I think you just have to keep trying and as soon as you get a quote you like, book it. I don't know why workmen won't just say 'I'm not interested'

The landscapers I've had quotes from were incredibly busy. My local one turfed my lawn this week, having booked it about 4 weeks ago.

curiositykitten · 29/04/2012 20:12

Why haven't you contacted him?

OctopusSting · 29/04/2012 20:27

Sorry no, too far away Sad. Hope you find someone soon.

Spuddybean · 29/04/2012 20:54

curiosity I have! i have sent emails, texts, phone messages.

grockle i booked this on 4 april. Quotes given end march and official booking email was agreed between us on 4th April so we have waited. He originally said week after easter but then emailed and said this week. I asked what he wanted to do about keys and he said he'd call me nearer the time.

I have booked the 3 and only quotes we have had and none have shown up. This started last July :(

We originally budgetted 2k but then this quote came in at 3k and we thought well if no one else will do it we have to go with this.

Soooooo he was meant to start today and i have sent numerous emails/texts/messages.

I get an email saying basically, 'My phone was stolen Hmm and i now wont be able to do the work - i'm really up against it here'

So even if his phone was stolen, why couldn't he email? Why did he wait till after the start date to inform me? and am i supposed to now feel sorry for him because he is 'up against it'?

I am so upset i wont get the garden sorted out i am actually crying - Why am i being so stupid about this? AND WHY WONT ANYONE DO MY GARDEN?

WIBU and ridiculously hormonal to send him an arsey response and give him a terrible review on the find a tradesman website?

Just a silly thought but is there a college/university near you. A student may be able to do it and it may help towards their course work.

Nope, the guy sounds an ass. I can't believe people actually do stuff like this.
Also, why does he need your phone to do your garden? Hmm what a twaty excuse

Spuddybean · 30/04/2012 18:17

Well the pone was the reason he hadn't called sooner to let me know he wasn't going to the work - although he had my email so not really sure why he should even mention it. I'm supposed to say, oh that explains why you have let me wait for almost 6 weeks without having the decency to let me know you weren't bothering to show up.

I understand things happen - but surely you call and let people know asap, not wait till the day you should be there, after they have sent numerous messages, to drop them a really off hand email.

And i have given him a bad review and reported him to the tradesman website.

I will try out the colleges - thanks for the advice. I don't want to sound all middle class and precious but you'd think i would be fending them off in this climate.

Maybe i need to offer sexual favours and fry ups too? I am really getting quite desperate now!
