.. by faith, fees, ability, aptitude..whatever- the more diverse a community the school's parents say it is.

Seeker, I like you and this thread :) I think (FWIW) that if you are going to join a club of any kind which is exclusive, there will be little diversity.

Why this is debatable is beyond me and if people want to privately, grammar, faith or out-of-catchment educate, fine, but don't pretend it is driven by anything other than self interest.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/05/2012 23:07

Everyone is more likely to be state educated. What's the point that I missed?

seeker · 01/05/2012 23:07

Sorry, exclusive tot h state sector.

tudfty you're probably right either way!

happygardening · 01/05/2012 23:09

TOSN I'm proud of the fact that I am completely out of touch with all popular culture whether it be current or historical.
I'm afraid my knowledge of the world is restricted to what I find on the pages of Horse and Hound, The Spectator and the Telegraph and of course radio 4 although it has been dumbed down rather a lot lately.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/05/2012 23:10

Fair enough!

seeker · 01/05/2012 23:10

I might even go private for a"charming, elusive school" a bit like the Phantom Tollbooth. Or Tir na og.

DioneTheDiabolist · 01/05/2012 23:10

DS's school is vair exclusive. There isn't a single kid in it from the middle or upper classes in it. Of course they don't say that these kids aren't welcome, but the figures speak for themselves. No one above the C3 demographic attends.Grin

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/05/2012 23:11

I'd like a school that teaches puncture repair for use on hillsides (desolate).

maggio · 01/05/2012 23:12

I wasn't suggesting that all people who go to state schools are racists and of course there will be people who are racist who went to Private school. I used racist attacks as it would be a potential way of measuring how tolerant and open-minded a person is to people of different backgrounds.
Of course there would be other factors, nothing in life can be wholly explained by one factor.

happygardening · 01/05/2012 23:12

I hold my hands up and confess FizzyLaces your right my choice of independent education is only driven by self interest well actually interest in my DS.

TuftyFinch · 01/05/2012 23:16

I'll let you know when it's ready. I think they'll be trees to hide behind. A nice pond. Some sheep would add a pastoral chic. 2 rowing boats )wooden). 2 donkeys. I guess a few classrooms but maybe in those big wooden, I like those.

*Applications are now being accepted for entry to Tufty School. An elusive and charming school set in ....... blah

It's free and open to anyone. Welcome.

TuftyFinch · 01/05/2012 23:17

Nit I'll add puncture repair to the extra curricular bit. Alongside using a lawmmover safely.

LapsedPacifist · 01/05/2012 23:19

"Whats a secondary modern I've only ever heard of comprehensives and grammars."

Oh, FFS!

Before "Comprehensive" schools existed (early-mid 1970s) everyone took the
11 plus exam in year 6.

Those who passed (20%) went to Grammar schools. Those who failed (80%) went to "Secondary Modern" schools - unless your parents could send you to a private school. They were schools where you couldn't stay on past the age of 15. You couldn't study academic subjects, and you took CSE exams, not 'O' levels.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 01/05/2012 23:20

Lapsed, no point trying to explain. You won't get any thanks for your effort. Hmm

happygardening · 01/05/2012 23:21

LapsedPacifist thank you for the lesson I can go to be thoroughly informed about the ins and out of different schools.

seeker · 01/05/2012 23:22

Similar schools still exist in some areas. They aren't really secondary moderns because most have 6th forms and the all take GcSES. Hut the rangenof subjects is usually more limited, and the emphasis tends to be towards the vocational rather than the academic.

happygardening · 01/05/2012 23:25

Have you had a sense of humour bypass or just missed the irony?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 01/05/2012 23:25

Not really. LapsedPacifist wasn't the only one who answered your question.

happygardening · 01/05/2012 23:26

I'm not as stereotypical as your prejudiced minds are happy to believe.
