Im from the uk but have recently moved to Brisbane. I was pleased to find they have mothercare over here but shocked to find they are selling gollie dolls. I thought they stopped doing these years ago.

The fact that a golly was a favourite toy of many perfectly nice MNers isnt an issue with me at all!

I really do not think it is an issue for anyone on this thread.

As Aitch says its those that insist that the bloody things are harmless little rag dolls now with absolutely no negative connatations that do my head in.

Particularly when its couched in terms of 'oversensitivity' 'PC gorn mad' etc etc.

Loving a toy you were given as a child doesnt make you a racist. There is nothing wrong with having fond memories of a cherished present.

Aitch Grin Noddy was a wanker

Hi I'm back and see we've got no further on with this apart from a few nice people defending my posts (thanks)

I didn't particularly like being associated with burning crosses on the lawn or suggestions that I was a racist but I was more amused about the assumptions some (especially Tethersand and Mrs dv) were making about me.

However, enough is enough -If you care to look back at my early posts the broad thrust of them was that I had coverted one of these dolls when I was young but now that I know better I would never buy or own one myself but because it wasn't illegal, I would defend the right of anyone who wanted to buy or own one. (And in a related light I would never intentionally make nasty or unkind remarks related to religion, sexuality, gender, ethnic group, personal appearance or country of origin.

Apology please (if you can be gracious enough)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 30/04/2012 13:01

sorry, WHY would you defend the right of someone to own or buy one?

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 13:05

Aitch - READ my post - because they have a right - because it's not illegal.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/04/2012 13:06

lots of things are legal but deplorable though!

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 13:06

Quite

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/04/2012 13:26

mirry what assumptions have I been making about you then?

'I see we've go not further on' do you mean 'I see not everyone is ageeing with me yet'

What exactly am I supposed to aplogise for? Disagreeing with you and not finding your posts 'fun'?

tethersend · 30/04/2012 13:28

mirry-

Golliwogs are not illegal.

Nobody has said they should be.

Golliwogs are racist.

Having owned one as a child does not make you racist.

Owning one now might lead people to believe that you are racist.

I think that's it.

Oh, and I should 'get a life' for putting across this point of view.

Oh. Oh dear. It's empty.

tethersend · 30/04/2012 13:31

chatty-

"Most people today will agree with you that they were used to mock black and they wouldn't own one now."

Before I came on MN, I too thought this to be true. I am still aghast that anyone can think otherwise; then the topic comes up from time to time, and there are enough posters who argue that the golliwog is not racist to make you either hold your head in your hands or laugh your arse off that they can believe such bollocks. I tend to flit between the two Wink

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/04/2012 13:32

I love the idea that anyone who understands that gollies are racist is certainly unwittingly going around being hypocritical and racist all the time because obviously everyone says 'paddy' and 'mick'. Surely it's the same idiots people who do that, isn't?

Your aaaaaah moment is denied, Mirry!

CrispyCod · 30/04/2012 13:41

I find Barbie offensive. She too fucking perfect.

chattychatchat · 30/04/2012 14:05

Most people, most people, most people.

Tethersend you will never get everyone round to one way of thinking, you will never please everyone. Keep benging that head if you think for one minute you will.

I thought it was great when you put the post up about the meaning of the dolls because it educated SOME people on the history. Some people will have looked at that link and gone WTF I didn't know that.

But the KKK ref everybody knows is about racism and for that you were out of order. It was nasty and mirry didn't deserve it.

You don't have to offer an apology for your point of veiw on gollis or anything else if you don't want to but remember that when people don't offer one to you for theirs.

You want me to aplogise for my posts being not actually hostile but perhaps a bit, maybe, could be interpreted as, possibly hostile in tone?

Perhaps you could aplogise for 'having fun' about a subject that some people find particularly unfunny?

Or for repeating myths about political correctness therefore perpetuating them further?

I haven't got anything you just said, I'm afraid. Proof-read carefully and re-work so that your sentences convey your meaning more effectively.

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 14:39

Do you know I feel like that little kid in the playground being kicked by 3 others.
