Im from the uk but have recently moved to Brisbane. I was pleased to find they have mothercare over here but shocked to find they are selling gollie dolls. I thought they stopped doing these years ago.

Mirry I am finding your posts patronizing and quite rude. I dislike my feelings be dismissed with glib phrases such as 'getting hot under the collar'. You also accused me of being 'angry' which was untrue and based on an assumption you made about me.

You also assumed my tone was hostile.

So thus far you have dismissed my sincere feelings, accused me of being angry and hostile on an open forum and you are demanding an apology from me?

Confused

As for the other thing;

" Baa baa black sheep should be renamed (and was for a time in the 1980s) for obvious reasons. Asking for black coffee definitely should be outlawed - we should be asking for coffee without milk. Not liking the smell of curry or the taste of garlic is racist. Expecting people to learn the language of the new country is racist. I could go on forever".

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 14:44

Yes, thethersan i wondered if you would pick that up so sorry again for being rude - that's 2 apologies from me but none to me from anyone else

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/04/2012 14:45

I have four 0 levels

MissFaversham · 30/04/2012 14:47

I Remember saving coupons from the Robertson's jars for my golliwog. It was my favourite toy. Alas it has been turned into something shocking now Sad

tethersend · 30/04/2012 14:47

You don't need to apologise, mirry. You strengthened my argument.

I don't understand MrsDV - are you saying that the above should be the case?

I don't like gollies who are they supposed to look like anyway? Oh yes, me, got called a gollie-wog often enough as a kid.

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 14:55

No I really didin't understand what you meant Mrs Dv, because the meaning behind my post was that they are all urban myths.

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 14:56

MrsDV I am not being passive agressive.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/04/2012 14:57

So are you arguing that it's an urban myth than golliwogs are racist?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/04/2012 14:59

Yes you are.

Demanding apologies for hurt feelings whilst being rude about others is pretty PA.

How can something that you say did happen not happen? Either Baa Baa Black sheep was renamed or it wasnt.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/04/2012 14:59

Feeling like you are being kicked in the playground?

What would you call that?

Shouting BULLY when people dont agree with you is very PA.

GinPalace · 30/04/2012 15:04

I haven't read the thread just the first few posts.

I had two golliwogs when I was a child. I had no idea they were supposed to be black people. My cousins are black and as they looked nothing like the golliwogs I didn't put 2+2 together. I enjoyed them as toys and liked their clothes.

I feel awful that anyone could have called an actual person a golliwog and now I know their origins it obviously takes anyway any enjoyment of them.

But at the time I had no idea and played with them lots, I loved those golliwogs but not as parodies of black people, just as a stuffed toy.

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 15:06

MrsDV I really don't understand what you mean. Baa Baa blacksheep was renamed in some schools and local authorities, similarly the black and white coffee/milk thing (I know because I was there) but as far as I know they are back to it's original name.

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 15:06

What does PA?

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 15:07

Sorry - what does PA mean?

MarysBeard · 30/04/2012 15:08

Same here, I thought they were clowns with a black face, black makeup rather than a black person, like a pierrot is white... I wouldn't go and buy one now, but my nephew is half English, half Nigerian and he plays with an old golly. If they aren't offended, then I'm not going to be on their behalf...

mirry2 · 30/04/2012 15:08

Mrs DV what have i said that you don't agree with?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 30/04/2012 15:15

mary dont worry I am not offended on anyone else's behalf.

Just mine.

tethersend · 30/04/2012 15:32

It's like nailing jelly to a wall.

Glitterkitten · 30/04/2012 19:34

I like gollies, I always did. I remember feeling offended and slightly violated to learn of the negative connotations. Kind of a stain on the innocence of my childhood mind.

I've never personally attributed a negative thought to them other than that which society told me was there.

I still think they are cute. If I've appreciated them for positive reasons I can't really see a problem in continuing to appreciate them...

Am I making sense Confused

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 30/04/2012 19:51

... Because now you know what they actually are?
