AIBU to think that dds' primary school has been inappropriate in two instances this week

Firstly, today my 10 yo dd's teacher was showing them funny youtube clips of animals doing crazy things. just seemed a bit crass to me. plus i don't think a teacher should be promoting a website that's full of some pretty dodgy material.

Secondly, dd2, who is 7, was in a school concert this week. most of the songs that they sang were pop songs with lyrics that were pretty adult, imo. i don't want to hear my 7yo singing about 'desire', 'one track minds'. i just don't see why they had to pick songs with 'sexualised' or adult themes in the lyrics. the song 'valerie' for example is about going to jail following drink driving offence! and before you all say that they don't understand the lyrics anyway, i don't feel that that is justification at all.

so...AIBU/ too old fashioned, or is this a all a bit dodgy?

YABU...

Tee2072 · 27/04/2012 16:21

If you are serious, then you are being silly about the YouTube thing. Because there are dodgy things on there? Really?!?!

I agree that there are plenty of non-sexual songs they could have sung.

Petsinmypudenda · 27/04/2012 16:21

YABU

Nothing wrong with you tube and watching animals do silly things - its hardcore porn she is showing them.

You cant shelter you kids from current music, surely they have herd these songs before?

Petsinmypudenda · 27/04/2012 16:22

I used the phase 'current music' --- I am my granny

Tee2072 · 27/04/2012 16:24

Also, do you remove your daughter from all places that have 'dodgy' things? Like the library?

noonar · 27/04/2012 16:24

just to clarify i would have no prob with the animal clips if shown at home, but the youtube website is barred in schools. for that reason i don't think she should be showing clips from any site that needs parental supervision to a high level.

OP posts:
Petsinmypudenda · 27/04/2012 16:26

Its not barred in my sons primary.

I assume she was showing them the clips not letting them browse what ever they like

noonar · 27/04/2012 16:28

tee i think thats very different. yes sure, they get exposed to stuff from the media / environment , but it doesnt, imo, mean its ok for the the schools to expose them to it too (the lyrics i mean, not the animal clips LOL)

Often you tube is barred for pupil access, but allowed for adults to use at their discretion.

minimisschief · 27/04/2012 16:30

you know you cant get adult stuff on youtube without having adult settings enabled

Hassled · 27/04/2012 16:30

YABU re the YouTube thing. Yes, YouTube has some dodgy stuff - but also a whole host of funny/interesting/informative clips.

YANBU re the songs - there's something really yuck about children singing adulty songs. I've seen small children singing the Adele Stalker Song and it's just plain wrong. Let them sing about whiskers on kittens, FGS.

lattelov3r · 27/04/2012 16:30

more ridiculous than unreasonable tbh the clips would of been supervised by the teacher and likely vetted first and the songs are just songs, good luck trying to find a selection of songs without lyrics like that these days as long as they arnt full of swearing then YABU imo

Sirzy · 27/04/2012 16:30

Perhaps the children selected the songs they wanted to sing?

And do you not trust the teacher to select apporpriate videos?

redyam · 27/04/2012 16:31

You won't find porn on YouTube.

overmydeadbody · 27/04/2012 16:33

YABU re Youtube. Do you know how much really good educational stuff is on there?! Nothing wrong with a teacher using it, either to support lessons or for a big of a laugh with her pupils.

You need to give the teacher a bit more credit. So what if there are dodgy clips on youtube? The teacher wasn't showing them those, and what child doesn't already know about youtube anyway?

As for the songs, most likely the kids picked them

SuePurblyingoodVOICE · 27/04/2012 16:36

I'm not sure I see the point of showing children funny animal clips though? Maybe it was as part of an IT session or something?

YANBU on the songs thing - it makes me cringe too. They should be singing Little White Bull and Scarborough Fair badly, like wot I did.

overmydeadbody · 27/04/2012 16:37

noonar youtube is only barred to pupils at school, not to teachers.

noonar · 27/04/2012 16:37

ok, it wasnt that the animal clips that were inappropriate in content. as i've said earlier, i have reservations about promoting the use of the site as it needs parental supervision.

and no, i dont trust her to have choose tasteful clips Grin

latte, there is quite a big debate atm about the sexualisation of children, so you are being a bit simplistic saying songs are 'just songs', imo.

i accept that i may be being precious re the animal clips but stand my ground on the song issue.

thanks for replies x

Does everything in life need a point? On a Friday afternoon can't a teacher have a bit of fun with the class?

defineme · 27/04/2012 16:37

We were singing 'current' pop songs in my school concert in the 80s-I think that's very normal and it's nice when teachers let them do something they like.
I found the pupil choreographed dancing at a recent secondary school competition a bit strong, but I firmly believe the kids were doing it in innocence and it wasn't like the teeny kids on that'Gypsy Wedding' programme.

I think you're being very very po faced about the animal clips-lovely of the teacher to have a laugh with the kids of a Friday afternoon.

overmydeadbody · 27/04/2012 16:37

Sue maybe the teacher just wanted to have a laugh with her pupils for ten minutes on a friday?! What on earth is wrong with that? Do you think teachers only ever do 'educational' stuff and nothing else?

Sirzy · 27/04/2012 16:38

Noonar by your logic they shouldn't use the Internet at all in school as they should always be supervised at home!

I doubt the children even understand the meaning of the lyrics, I certainly didn't when I was young i just liked the songs!

valiumredhead · 27/04/2012 16:39

YABU

AmberLeaf · 27/04/2012 16:40

I bet the children loved it.

SuePurblyingoodVOICE · 27/04/2012 16:48

Do you think teachers only ever do 'educational' stuff and nothing else?

What? I literally have no idea what you mean by this. For one, I haven't said I think anything at all about 'what teachers do'. And for another, most teachers would argue that everything they do has an educational value, yes. Even the fun stuff. So I'm really not sure what you're getting at. Hmm

Sirzy, I take your point , I forgot it was Friday today. I had assumed the teacher was using it as part of her normal planning and I couldn't work out why.
