AIBU to think that dds' primary school has been inappropriate in two instances this week

Firstly, today my 10 yo dd's teacher was showing them funny youtube clips of animals doing crazy things. just seemed a bit crass to me. plus i don't think a teacher should be promoting a website that's full of some pretty dodgy material.

Secondly, dd2, who is 7, was in a school concert this week. most of the songs that they sang were pop songs with lyrics that were pretty adult, imo. i don't want to hear my 7yo singing about 'desire', 'one track minds'. i just don't see why they had to pick songs with 'sexualised' or adult themes in the lyrics. the song 'valerie' for example is about going to jail following drink driving offence! and before you all say that they don't understand the lyrics anyway, i don't feel that that is justification at all.

so...AIBU/ too old fashioned, or is this a all a bit dodgy?

I have no problem with a bit of pre-vetted YouTube, but we had a huge issue recently when DD2's teacher got them to sing along to a song that was pretty much uncritically in favour of binge drinking - to 9 year olds! And they 'had' to sing it twice (so he could hardly claim he'd made a mistake with the lyrics). DD2 comes home and starts asking us what 'smashed' means and what 'Jack D' is. I send my children to school in the expectation that the material will be age appropriate - this was not. That's a huge difference from a 'bit of unscheduled fun'.

I see your point about YouTube, but my DCs are not allowed to use the internet at all without supervision... there is as much / more dodgy stuff to be found on google but they still use search engines for homework etc.

I completely agree about the songs though, there are some things that little ears do not need to hear.

I certainly have a quite a few concerns about YouTube, not least the appalling comments people post. However the thought of kids being "sexualised" by songs made me laugh. Anyone else here sing along innocently to "Come on Eileen" when they were nine? We did at my Catholic school. That said, I was at a lunchtime party a couple of years back where there was karaoke in the restaurant and one of the mums led all the little ones in a rousing rendition of "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon. That was a bit odd...

By the way, to me "Valerie" is a Steve Winwood song. Showing my age, I know Blush

So, Youtube has some dodgy content and therefore children should never see a video on it.

No TV in your house, OP? No books?

DCs will sing them in the playground, always have and always will. You can't avoid them hearing popular music.

Complaining about YouTube is a bit daft as teachers often use online sources and YouTube is pretty tame (especially for a 10 year old).

I don't like dodgy pop songs for younger children, there are plenty of songs they could sing that don't have anything to do with sex (and lots of pop songs are pretty misogynist too). My children's school has a great music teacher who has found lots of fun songs for them to sing (she does also like some of the most terrible warbly ballad too sadly). However I'm not sure that mos schools have that sort of resource, and it may be they chose popular songs simply because they are easy to get hold of, and generally pretty easy to sing.

Yabu and a bit precious. YouTube had some dodgy content, ad does tv, google etc. Dd, almost 8, is not allowed on the internet without adult supervision, these kids had supervision. Why don't you trust the teacher?
The songs may not be a great choice, but would find out more before being offended. Maybe they were asked to choose.
it does seem like you're trying to find something to complain about. Have you already had issues with the school\ teacher?
