To think these fraudulent cold callers are criminal

There's an unpleasant phone scam happening just now. An Indian girl just called. It sounded as if it was coming from far away as my own voice was echoing back at me. Here's the conversation:

Fraudstress "Am I speaking to Mrs. Seoladair"?
Me "Who's calling?"
Fraudstress "Are you Mrs. Seoladair?"
Me "Who are you?"
Fraudstress whispers frenziedly to someone then hangs up.......

Then the phone rings again. This time it's an Indian man and the echo is still there.
Fraudster "Are you Mrs. Seoladair?"
Me "Who's calling?"
Fraudster "We are a law firm. We have a report that a car from your address (and he had the address details correct) has been involved in an accident."
Me "You are criminals."
Fraudster pathetically says "I'm not a criminal"
I hang up.

If I hadn't known for sure that the car is in the garage, I might have really panicked about my husband. Right now, someone is probably in a terrible state after receiving one of these calls.

There's also a scam going round where they get you to log into your computer and then they hack in. When they tried this on me I told them the call was being recorded as I knew it was a scam. They saw their arse and hung up.

why would anyone be in a terrible state from receiving one of those calls? They said they were a law firm (liars) not the police.

OP YANBU. Scammers. Ugh.

DH's work get them all the time, accusations that the company van has run someone off the road, or driven into another vehicle without stopping. Luckily the work records show where the vehicle is on any given day.

Obviously enough companies pay up for these scams to work.

I could have some real fun with the Windows ones if they didn't have such strong accents. I'm partially deaf and just can't understand them well enough. We don't use Windows in this house, we use Linux.
