To tell DS that he cant buy them?

I am genuinely stuck here between overstepping the mark or being helpful.

DS has wanted a set of Dr Dre Beats headphones for months, its his 13th birthday tomorrow and he's saved a bit himself and also worked out that if he uses all of his birthday money then he can afford this item ( 130 quid Shock )
I don't agree with him spending this amount on a set of headphones but hey Ho...

Anyway, he found a pair on eBay, I was about to order them this morning, but decided to message the seller to check if they are the genuine brand ( normally they retail for a hundred quid more ) and it turns out they are replicas.

I think DS is being ridiculous to pay for these, but wibu to not 'let' him, or do I have to stand back and let him do what he wants with his own money?
Confused

Oooh as the owner of an almost 13 year old DS I feel your pain. So your DS doesn't know they are replicas? i think my DS wouldn't want them unless they were the real thing IYKWIM.

Are you going to wait til he comes home from school then tell him? If he still wanted them I would let him buy them as it's his money.

eurochick · 23/04/2012 12:18

I think he is about to be taken for a mug. I think you need to strongly try to dissuade him. What does "replicas" mean? £10 headphones with a different fascia that makes them look like the ones he wants? If he still wants to go ahead then more fool him.

seeker · 23/04/2012 12:19

Well if they are replicas you would be daft to buy them because you have no idea what the sound quality will be like. 130 quid is am insane amount of money to spendbon headphones, but at least withe the genuine Knesset you'll know they are decent quality and you can getvyour money back ifvthey are faulty.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2012 12:20

Headphones seem to be a big deal at the moment. DS1 has just bought some SkullCandy ones but they were only £25 thankfully.

Petsinmypudenda · 23/04/2012 12:20

I would tell him they are replicas and if he still wants to buy let him, Its his money.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:20

Well I did phone him this morning in his break to tell him, but he wants them so bad that he appears to be turning a blind eye.

I did refuse to order them tho, till he's had today to have a good think about it.

My DS gets really fixated on things, it's really hard to put him off getting stuff. it's football boots at the moment. Hmm

sixlostmonkeys · 23/04/2012 12:23

tell him you are saying no to these and explain what replica means (good luck explaining such a thing to a 13 yr old who has his heart set on something!)

Go through all the options with him - the price of new, the possibility of them coming up in a sale, or risking 2nd hand. Whatever he decides on is ultimately his choice especially as he has been saving for them.

It's a hard one this. I have had to watch my ds learn the hard way at times (with things just like this) - but.... they have to learn.

Amapoleon · 23/04/2012 12:23

£130 for replicas. He can get the real thing for that price. I wouldn't let him buy those but would the real thing if thats what he wants as it's his money. I must add i buy my headphones from the pound shop hahaha

seeker · 23/04/2012 12:23

Have you looked on amazon?

seeker · 23/04/2012 12:24

Which ones does he want?

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:24

Tell him fake ones will be useless and they will break.

Let him spend his money on what he wants though -that's what birthday money and pocket money is for.

Headphones are a massive deal at the moment, ds saved up for Skull Candy ones.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:24

Bloody nuisance teens arnt they Grin

So it seems I'm just gonna have to let him go ahead if that's what he wants then. :(
What a waste of money.

sugarice · 23/04/2012 12:25

Check with him first to see if he still wants them off Ebay despite them being replicas. I bet he'll want the real thing and if it's his money let him spend it. My eldest ds is holding out til Christmas for them. Smile

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:25

Tell him his mates will know they are cheap fakes Wink

seeker · 23/04/2012 12:26

NO- don't go ahead if they are fakes- that's just daft!

valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:27

NO!!! What seeker said - not if they are fakes!

Losingitall · 23/04/2012 12:27

It's so tough! My son has saved enoughto buy a £120 pair of football boots. It's mad. He saved though and it's what he wants so I ordered them for him.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:28

He wants the Dre monster beats. you can get genuine Dre solos for that price, but apparently he says they have bad reviews Hmm

I found a red pair on eBay of the monster beats (fake) in red and they are 80 quid, but he only wants the blue set.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 23/04/2012 12:28

On Amazon the real ones are about that price!

Theas18 · 23/04/2012 12:29

They aren't "replicas" they are FAKES.

They will not be the quality your DS thinks he's paying for and it isn't legal to sell fakes anyway. If it's ebay it's quite likely that they'll take your money and either scarper or the listing will be pulled by vero or who ever.

If it was my kid I'd explain that he needs to choose a more appropriate purchase, I'm not buying a fake.

(not to mention the "mugger magnet" a pair of headphone that cost £200 would make him in the street- and it definitely isn't worth being beaten up for).

In this house the kids get their headphones from TKMaxx. we've had all sorts of brands incl skullcandy and the one thing for sure is they don't last , whether they cost £5 or £25 though - though DD1 has over the ear senheiser (sp) and they've been very good and long lasting- probably as they are "home " ones.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:30

Ah suga, your ds too hey Grin

I wonder what the attraction is? they're just headphones after all.

OP posts:
cantspel · 23/04/2012 12:32

My son had the Dr Dre beats for his 14th birthday. The deal was he saved half and i would pay the other half but i wouldn't have let him waste his money on fakes.

loopylou6 · 23/04/2012 12:32

Yes these are over the head ones too, and he knows he's not allowed to take them out with him.

I think the ones on Amazon are 'solo' and not as good apparently ( even tho they are actually genuine)

OP posts:
seeker · 23/04/2012 12:33

They won't work for long and they will be rubbish quality. And you will be putting money into the pocket of a shameless criminal. Say no.
